A Change in Values

Some commentators are saying that the large swing to the greens was not entirely a protest vote, but a real change in values.

I think we are seeing some of the effects of a very large and profound transition from the old industrial age to the new post-carbon age. one of the essential changes is for all humans to adopt new values, such as responsibility for one's actions and awareness of how our actions affect our environment, other people, other creatures and our present and future sustainability.

Essentially, as at all times of transition, its a battle between the old, who fear change, and the new, who fear non-change as they can see the dangers of staying in the past. balance is necessary as change, if too rapid, can destabilise.

I suspect we will see as many political changes coming up as we will increasingly see vast changes in weather patterns.

What do others think?

Quite amazing but normal for about seniors. Elderwoman begins a topic (a change in values) making in my opinion a political statement which to me made sense. But as usual by the time you get to the bottom of the page after all the filtering the subject is totally lost and discussion off elderwomans comment right out the window.

And you westozzy have contributed a great post you feel?

Maybe be less critical and see people are talking and that

is what a forum is all about. Who says where a conversation will take us

and does it matter?

point taken........please carry on with your wonderful comments.

I think we are as a society in a constant state of movement and change. Mostly the changes are gradual and therefore pass into daily life unnoticed. Values and traditions are in a constant state of flux.

We need only to look at things like recycling, less use of plastic bags...down here in the South, we have adjusted to using far less water than previously...that have become the norm.

Healthy eating and lifestyle are a far more conscious effort than a few years ago.

Technology has made huge leaps and bounds.

Look at the mobile phones now. They are mini computers, and much more.

I think what has happened is the Election has simply brought into stark relief some things we already live with.

And just as a matter of interest, and not directed at anyone in particular, either on the forum or elsewhere, I find it extremely annoying that some people who are more inclined toward Green /left politics , assume that more conservative voters are not concerned with pollution and the environment.

Yaretzi quite right, you never know what is coming up next

which makes it interesting, there is just as many points of

view on any subject as there is senior citizens,

However sometimes I feel disgruntled and may I say,

disappointed when knowing that my point of view is far superior!!

but is outrightly rejected by those who should know better. seth.

Yes westozzy you are right it seems that nobody can stay on topic in here.

So I have made an urgent call to the 'Stay on Topic Police" >:(

In Fact I think I can hear them coming now >:-(

Yep this is them.

Nice to see you here, Westozzy.

I find it quite amusing at times, to see one or two or three only ever pop up to make smart alec remarks and to criticise individuals.............usually me or BigVal...well that is, excepting now there are another two targets ...they know who they are.

Would love to see more of your more sane comments. I think we are on different sides of the political spectrum, but as I recall, your comments have always been of value.

Koko, you've made an interesting comment: "I find it extremely annoying that some people who are more inclined toward Green /left politics , assume that more conservative voters are not concerned with pollution and the environment. ".

If conservative voters really are concerned with pollution and environment I am wondering why they tend to vote against reduction in logging of old growth forests, for more and more polluting mining, more urban sprawl, greater immigration, more roads, more cars, greater exploration for oil/gas on our barrier reef, less investment and government support for clean renewable energy sources, etc....

If conservative voters really were concerned with pollution and destruction of our environment, would our country be in the dire state it is in today? (I'm referring to the poor state of our environment.)

it may be that you are an exception and really do care about these things, so i'm wondering who you vote for and what your reasons might be?
