A high-tech Chinese research vessel has been detected mapping strategically important waters off the Western Australian coast where submarines are known to regularly transit.

Key points:

A Defence official said the ship was mapping waters used by Australian submarines to get to the South China Sea

A Border Force spokesperson said the Xiang Yang Hong 01 had stayed in international waters

In 2018, the Xiang Yang Hong 01 was found to be operating illegally within the Exclusive Economic Zone of Palau

In January and February, officials closely tracked the movements of the oceanographic ship as it conducted deepwater surveys in the Indian Ocean near Christmas Island and the Australian mainland.

In the shadow of the Wolf Warriors: Chinese nationalists urge President Xi to seize Taiwan as Beijing's bullying could see the island democracy that beat the virus barred from this week's vital WHO summit

IAN BIRRELL: The island nation of Taiwan is almost unique among locked down developed countries with just seven deaths and 440 confirmed cases.

If there is a war between China and the US it will draw in multiple nations and make the impact of Covid-19 look trivial by comparison. At this stage it is just posturing and sabre rattling which I don't believe will lead to war. Both nations have everything to lose and nothing to gain by a war.

80.5% Tarrif is going ahead for five years if we sell Barley to China starting on 19th May.

Better start making beer and exporting it using the Barley then.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison demanded an independent inquiry into the deadly respiratory virus and the World Health Organisation 's handling of the crisis

China has imposed an extraordinary tariff on Australian barley exports as apparent punishment for Scott Morrison's push for a coronavirus inquiry.

The Australian Prime Minister in April demanded an independent probe into the deadly respiratory virus and the World Health Organisation's handling of the crisis.

In response, Chinese state media and leaders warned of trade retribution that could wipe $153billion from the Australian economy.

After weeks of threatening to boycott the meat and barley industries and restrict travel and foreign education opportunities, China on Monday announced a 80.5 per cent levy on barley exports starting May 19.

Beijing claims Australia subsidised its farmers and dumped barley in China earlier this month. The tax will remain in place for five years, China's Ministry of Commerce said.

I wonder if this is an excuse to bring Australia's economy down so it is cheaper for China to buy up the land when the farms fail?

Maybe Australians can start making barley bread instead of wheat bread?

Perhaps it is a case of the farmers putting all their eggs in one basket

Barley Bread.  What does barley bread taste like?It has an earthy, nutty flavor that's difficult to find in other loaves. It has a hard crust and a soft yet dense crumb that's ever-so-slightly moist with a distinct texture from the barley and whole wheat flour.

Who'll tame the dragon? After its clampdown on Hong Kong, its global ambitions are transparent, but China expert CLIVE HAMILTON reveals the burgeoning power wants nothing less than a life-and-death battle with the West  CLIVE HAMILTON: China wants nothing less than a life-and-death battle with the West

By a majority of 2,878 to one (with six abstentions), China's parliament this week rubber-stamped a proposal that will change life for the citizens of Hong Kong for ever. The National People's Congress paved the way for a sweeping new security law - so draconian that it would make even Draco, the ancient Greek legislator from whose name the word is derived, blush. It will be imposed in September, but its repercussions are already being felt. It criminalises what Beijing deems to be subversion, separatism, terrorism and foreign interference - but that's only the start.

Shocking, if China gets there way they will take back control over Hong Kong and one step closer to their agenda. I feel sorry for the youth of Hong Kong who will die fighting this. They fear that if anyone does anything wrong they will be sent to China to disappear.

Those soldiers are starting to look like robots with the gear they are wearing.

They certainly do not support Western Democracry and looks like they never will but why do they want to do deals with Western countries all the time? It is a real worry when they are moving in all over the world and using the power of money to influence so much.

Saturday at 7pm here in Perth and the site is dead slow, have cleaned the temp files and cookies six times today so it is not that!                 What is happening please?

The candle of democracy is about to be extinguished in Hong Kong (pictured) by the Chinese regime, as can be seen by the widespread protests over the last week

The candle of democracy is about to be extinguished in Hong Kong (pictured) by the Chinese regime, as can be seen by the widespread protests over the last week

In my dealings with China over many years, I have learnt one hard fact: they do not play by the same rules as other countries. They play dirty.

When I went to Beijing as Transport Minister, I was warned by the Foreign Office not to take my phone or my laptop as it was assumed the

Chinese would suck all the information out of the devices if I did.

At the residence of the British Ambassador, I asked him a question about the political situation. He ushered me into the garden and advised

Me in a low voice that it was almost certain the residence was bugged, and to be very careful what I said.

If they bug embassies you wonder if they are planting them in other countries too.

I am sure the bug everything that they can lay their hands onto Incognito;  looking at the riots in the USA reminds me of the riots in Hong Kong, at least the US and China have something in common now!

China has very dangerous ambitions IMO.

A must to watch for any responsible person in Oz!

It is last nights    [15th June 2020] Four Corners Programme about how the world is being monitored by computers and indeed what China is up to.

Mind boggling, however computers are run by people and I was wondering when I was watching the programme what if?  What if someone that dosn't agree with the programming slightly changes it?

Monday’s Four Corners story “In the Age of AI” is a PBS Frontline production on China emerging as an AI superpower.

“Artificial Intelligence can be used in many ways that are very beneficial for society. But the current use of AI isn’t necessarily aligned with the goals of building a better society.” Prof of Computer Science

AI, or Artificial Intelligence, will be one of the defining developments of the 21st century. The ability of machines to ‘think’ at a speed and depth far beyond the capacity of any human is unleashing incredible possibilities.

“There are some people in Silicon Valley who believe that you just have to trust the technology…There’s another argument, which is what I think most of them believe deep down, which is, this is different.” Technology specialist

Along with the potential benefits, there is also the capacity for harm. In this thought provoking Four Corners, many of the world’s leading thinkers on AI explain the risks that comes with this powerful tool.

“AI is a technology that can be used for good and for evil…That I think is also a tricky issue for every country.” Former head of Google China

China is emerging as an AI superpower, staking its reputation on catching up then overtaking America for AI supremacy within the decade.

“The more data, the better the AI works. So, in the age of AI, where data is the new oil, China is the new Saudi Arabia.” AI scientist

The competition between the two nations has technologists worried that this is opening up another potential tech war.

“One of the things I worry about the most is that the world is going to split in two… and that there will be a Chinese tech sector and there will be an American tech sector…It’ll be kind of like the Cold War.” Technology specialist

Critics say the Chinese Communist Party is using AI as an instrument of authoritarian control.

“It’s very powerful, Orwellian-like, and it’s extremely troublesome in terms of civil liberty.” Research scientist

Outside of China, even long-term backers of the tech industry say the rise of the global tech giants is a threat to us all.

“Private corporations have built a corporate surveillance state without our awareness or permission and the systems necessary to make it work are getting a lot better.” Silicon Valley investor

Monday 15th of June at 8.30pm on ABC.

I have it recorded Celia and hope to get to see that tonight

Interesting program but I was disappointed it didn't delve the depths of just how much AI is already being incorporated in government, financial and social media systems to "super-surveil", manipulate and control the daily lives of people around the world.

I fear the era of "Big Brother on AI steroids" is well and truly with us.

Think ... Australia's "Robo-debt" scheme; Facebook, Twitter, Google and ... even more frightening ... China's grand Social Credit System development.

The Social Credit System is a national reputation system being developed by the Chinese government. China’s social credit system was formally announced in 2014. The program initiated regional trials in 2009, before launching a national pilot in 2014. By 2020, it is intended to standardise the assessment of citizens' and businesses' economic and social reputation, or 'Social Credit'. The system works on a reward and punishment basis and is closely related to China's mass surveillance systems such as Skynet, which incorporates facial recognition system, big data analysis technology and AI. As of June 2019, according to the National Development and Reform Commission of China, 26.82 million air tickets as well as 5.96 million high-speed rail tickets have been denied to people who were deemed "untrustworthy".

As of November 2019, in addition to dishonest and fraudulent financial behaviour, other behaviour that some cities have officially listed as negative factors of credit ratings includes playing loud music or eating in rapid transits, violating traffic rules such as jaywalking and red-light violations, making reservations at restaurants or hotels but not showing up, failing to correctly sort personal waste, fraudulently using other people's public transportation ID cards, etc; on the other hand, behaviour listed as positive factors of credit ratings includes donating blood, donating to charity, volunteering for community services, and so on.

Yes all scary stuff RnR, Tech companies are pushing it all so they can make their billions. We survived quite well without all this stuff before and it is being thrust onto us way too fast IMO.

I wonder who this foreign entity could be?

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Australian private and public sector organisations are being targeted in a sophisticated cyber attack by a foreign entity.

“We know it is a sophisticated, state-based cyber actor because of the scale and nature of the targeting and the tradecraft used,” Mr Morrison said on Friday.

“The Australian government is aware of and alert to the threat of cyber attacks.”

He would not say which country was behind the attacks.

Asked if it was China, Mr Morrison said: “The Australian government is not making any public attribution about these matters.

“We are very confident that this is the actions of a state-based actor.

“We have not gone any further than that. I can’t control what speculation others might engage in.”

Mr Morrison said these were not new risks but were specific, targeted activities and he wanted to advise Australians and organisations so they can take action to protect themselves.

He said the investigations conducted so far have not revealed any large-scale personal data breaches.

Australia’s security agencies are working closely with allies and partners to manage it.

“I spoke to (British Prime Minister) Boris Johnson last night about a range of matters, including this one and there are a number of engagements with our allies overnight,” Mr Morrison said.

The prime minister also spoke to Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese on Thursday night on the issue, as well as state and territory leaders.

“Cyber attacks are a real issue,” Mr Albanese told reporters in the NSW town of Thredbo.

“What the evidence is, is that these attacks are expected to be more often.”

Last month a joint statement by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Cyber Security Centre said there had been “unacceptable malicious” cyber activity.

“Of particular concern are reports that malicious cyber actors are seeking to damage or impair the operation of hospitals, medical services and facilities, and crisis response organisations outside of Australia,” it said.

This week Lion brewery reported an IT system outage as a result of a ransomware attack.

“In response, we immediately shut down key systems as a precaution,” it said in a statement.

“There is still some way to go before we can resume our normal manufacturing operations and customer service.”

Toll Holdings also reported it was hit twice by cyber attacks in May.

The Government will not say publicly which state is behind the cyber attack, however the latest news says ...

Federal Government agencies believe that China is the nation behind ongoing cyber attacks on Australian institutions, including hospitals and state-owned utilities, in recent months.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-06-19/foreign-cyber-hack-targets-australian-government-and-business/12372470

I was being sarcastic RnR!

I realise that Celia ... but was interested in the "The Government will not say publicly " bit and then the contradictory "Federal Government agencies" bit from the media ...

Oh what diplomatic games some play.

China, Russia, North Korea, we always blame communist countries but it could be anyone.

We need more cyber security training, encourage all those computer kids to learn more and train up, there are courses to do it but are very expensive, should be free.

China's government has rejected suggestions a large-scale hacking attack on Australian government departments, service providers and companies came from China, and has blamed an Australian think-tank for making "baseless" claims.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said he believed the claims of hacking originated from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, which he said was funded by US arms companies and was making fictitious claims about China.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-06-19/china-responds-to-accusation-of-australia-cyber-attack/12375324

Mmmm ... situation normal.

Terrorism and subversion targeted in China's new Hong Kong laws.

China releases details of its controversial new law for Hong Kong, which includes setting up a new national security bureau to target certain political crimes. Directed by Beijing and led by Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam, the legislation will target secession, subversion of state power, terrorism and colluding with foreign forces.

Such categories have been used to jail political activists on the mainland.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-06-21/china-releases-details-of-security-law-for-hong-kong/12377562

In other words they are moving to bring in more communist laws, I think we will see more blood shed in Hong Kong, I pity those people losing their freedoms.

Control freaks the Communists in any country;  I have a horrible feeling they have their eyes set on Australia too.

Have you read the lead story from some time back Incognito? With the map?  You need to get into the site to read it now.

Yes I did read it and I am worried about that too, they are moving in the pacific and buying up Australia fast, needs to be stopped IMO.

Incognito please don't read something into the Tent city comment that was not there, you had replied to a question and I was making a comment that it was in the pink, when you see the programme you will know what I mean.  If I disagree with you, I think you know me by now I will agree to disagree. Nothing more. Enjoy your programme!

Okay Celia, sorry I took it the wrong way. Have it recording. Watching some pre-recorded Gardening Australia's.

Activists burn photos of Chinese President Xi Jinping during a protest in Bangalore

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/india-china-border-dispute-news-nail-studded-clubs-modi-ladakh-a9572531.html A photograph of nail-studded clubs purportedly used by Chinese forces in a brutal hand-to-hand skirmish that left 20 Indian soldiers dead in the Himalayas has caused outrage in India.

As the nation prepared to hold funerals on Thursday for some of those killed the first fatal clash on the two countries' border since 1975, defence analyst Ajai Shukla tweeted the image of weapons he said had been captured by Indian soldiers at the scene of the conflict in the Galwan Valley. He wrote: “Such barbarism must be condemned. This is thuggery, not soldiering.”

Similar sentiments echoed across social media as the image proliferated, published by India Today and BBC News, the latter of which reported receiving the image from “a senior military official on the India-China border.

However, Hindi news channel ABP’s defence and security editor Neeraj Rajput later tweeted that the army had since stated that the weapons pictured were only indicative of those used during the attack. No public statement has yet been made.

While Chinese and Indian officials are largely seeking to de-escalate tensions, India Today reports that troops stationed in Ladakh have been infuriated by the mutilated bodies of their comrades.

It is not yet known how many Chinese soldiers died in Monday’s fighting, in which hundreds of soldiers from the two nuclear powers fought a freezing battle on a narrow mountainous ridge at 14,000 feet using sticks and bats. Some reportedly fell to their deaths.

The editor-in-chief of China’s official Global Times outlet said Beijing was refusing to share the number of People’s Liberation Army losses as an act of “goodwill” to “avoid stoking public mood”.

Both sides have blamed each other for instigating the deadly clash. However, recent tensions first arose in April, when China sparked confrontations with Indian soldiers by sending thousands of troops, artillery and vehicles into disputed territory along the Line of Actual Control – a de facto boundary decided upon at the end of the 1962 Sino-Indian War.

India has said the Chinese claims on the Galwan Valley are “exaggerated and untenable”, after a discussion between the Indian foreign minister and top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi on Wednesday, in which both sides agreed not to take any steps to escalate matters and instead ensure peace and stability on the contested frontier.

However, as crowds lined the streets in Suryapet to watch the body of army colonel B Santosh Babu - who was killed in the clash - was brought home, prime minister Narendra Modi declared: “The sacrifice of our soldiers will not be allowed to go waste.”

Right now our land is under threat of being destroyed by the world’s largest thermal coal miner, China Shenhua Energy. The planned mega mine threatens to cut the state’s water supply, put threatened animals at risk and destroy Indigenous artefacts. This is why I’m calling on the NSW government to NOT grant them a mining license on 30 June, when the exploration license expires.

The Upper House recently passed a motion moved by Greens MP Cate Faehrman, against destruction of Aboriginal heritage. This is a small but significant win as it has implications for whether the company would receive a mining license. We must ensure the mining license is not granted.

The mine is directly linked to aquifers underneath the fertile black soil plains and could cause significant hardship for farmers, who are already struggling to afford water. More than 60 threatened species, including koalas, are at risk if this mine goes ahead. This mine is a cultural and environmental disaster waiting to happen.

Does this company worry about destroying the environment, fertile agricultural land and cultural areas?

Shenhua Energy has proposed to build an open cut coal mine on the Liverpool Plains near Gunnedah right in the middle of our state’s food bowl.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Shenhua_Energy

The mine will destroy numerous Aboriginal artefacts and sacred sites belonging to the Gomeroi People including grinding grooves showing markings of spears being sharpened for battle, burial sites and sacred trees.

Dolly Talbot, representing the traditional custodians, the Gomeroi People, has filed proceedings in the Federal Court to have the project’s approval overturned.

The mine will also destroy 4,000 hectares of fertile agricultural land on the  Liverpool Plains including 800 hectares of koala  habitat and drain massive amounts of precious groundwater.

The mine will extract 10 million tonnes of coal a year over 30 years despite being in the midst of a climate emergency and declining global demand for coal.

We must stand with the Gomeroi People to stop this mine destroying their sacred sites and cultural heritage.
