A high-tech Chinese research vessel has been detected mapping strategically important waters off the Western Australian coast where submarines are known to regularly transit.

Key points:

A Defence official said the ship was mapping waters used by Australian submarines to get to the South China Sea

A Border Force spokesperson said the Xiang Yang Hong 01 had stayed in international waters

In 2018, the Xiang Yang Hong 01 was found to be operating illegally within the Exclusive Economic Zone of Palau

In January and February, officials closely tracked the movements of the oceanographic ship as it conducted deepwater surveys in the Indian Ocean near Christmas Island and the Australian mainland.

Wake up dummies!   Of course the Chinese are up to something.  After all they have been allowed to buy most of Australia.  Why is the Australian government allowing the Chinese to take over our country, is it for the mighty dollar?  Hopefully the coronavirus can level the playing field and cut them down to size!

So easy to call everyone who disagrees with you "dummies" and write ignorant sinophobic comments when you sit annonomously behind a keyboard. Take a cold shower and pretend to educate yourself.

Well said cirdan! Perhaps Prisilla could detail her woes with facts to elucidate her concerns, otherwise she is speaking through her proverbial.

Not difficult to find the facts rather than post emotionally driven BS.

The United States and United Kingdom are the biggest investors in Australia, followed by Belgium, Japan and Hong Kong (SAR of China). China is our ninth largest foreign investor, with 1.8 per cent of the total.

The top four foreign landholders in Australia are the United Kingdom, followed by the United States, Netherlands and Singapore. China is fifth on the table, just ahead of the Philippines, with 1.5m ha, just 2.8% of the total of foreign owned land. To put that in perspective, Chinese interests have less than 15% of the size of the S. Kidman and Co land-holdings.

If you have FACTS and real figures to the contrary Priscilla please post here.

Good to know, I always wondered about that, we need to hear more about who is buying all the land and investing.

Taken from Business Insider:

While not as large as it once was in percentage terms, the United States remains Australia’s largest source of FDI.

Japan comes in a distant second place with the UK rounding off the podium places in third.

While China is now Australia’s largest source of foreign investment per annum, its level of FDI is still only the fifth largest on the list, sitting behind the Netherlands.

“Collectively, these trends show that historically important economies such as the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom continue to dominate the share of FDI into Australia. Emerging investor countries, especially China, are also becoming significant source countries,” the FIRB said.

“Foreign investment plays an important and beneficial role in the Australian economy because it helps drive economic growth, creates skilled jobs, improves access to overseas markets and enhances productivity.”

So the topic was about the Chinese ships in Western Australia and turned into which countries are buying up or investing in Australia. Why are they mapping these waters? That is the part that I am concerned about.

Yes Musicveg, I am still non the wiser.

Something to do with making a deeper channel for the subs I thought. Who knows.

Having spent many years in the Australian submarine service I can tell you all modern navies map strategically important waters of other countries and track each others naval exercises. It's part of the role of naval services. Including the Australian navy. For obvious reasons they don't talk publicly about what they do but widely disseminate information to the media on what other non-alliance navies are up to.

STOP looking for information that paints Australia, as just a victim. If that is the only way you view this country then you will only find the info that supports that view and get your attention.

Don't assume I'm only talking about you here Musicveg. There are plenty of other other people posting and reading here that susbscribe to conspiracy theory and "reds under the bed" idealogy. Of course you see two sides to everything but you appear to veer a bit to one side that supports conspiracy theory and spurious conjecture. Skeptism and seeking evidential information is much more healthy to a progressive society.

Not sure what you mean by "support" I am just discussing the possibilities, it is easy to be skeptical but hard to find hard evidence because even the so called authorities do not tell us everything, you can see what happens to whistleblowers. I find it hard to trust anyone when money is behind it, greed is the biggest evil we have, and we have a lot of division happening instead of people getting together which is sad. First we see that the fires brought people together to help one and other then we had the blamers, now we see people fighting over toilet paper because of fear.

Sorry double post that I can't remove.

US Navy sends two ships to patrol disputed South China Sea after Washington accuses Beijing of 'bullying' Malaysia over claims to underwater oil field

US Navy sends ships to South China Sea after Americans accused China of 'bullying'

The United States Navy said on Friday that the littoral combat ship USS Montgomery and the replenishment ship USNS Cesar Chavez were sent to conduct a 'presence operation' in the South China Sea near a Panamanian-flagged drill ship West Capella. The drill ship is under contract to conduct surveying operations in an area of the South China Sea where Malaysia lays claims to maritime sovereignty. In recent weeks, the Chinese People Liberation Army Navy has also deployed warships to the region. This is the second time in the last month that US Navy ships have been sent to the area to to deter Chinese vessels who have been accused of harassing neighboring countries.

It is a real worry, they are getting closer, or trying to.

The US, under the current administration is much more a threat to world peace than China. If the US and China were to go to war, would Australia join the US in such a conflict like we did in Vietnam, Iraq, Korea, Afganhnistan and possibly, in the near future, Iran? Would we truly want to?

Who here refuseses to buy anything made in China just out of principal, given what they believe is the current threat from China?

What do people think would happen to our economy/employment if we follow the US into a war with China?

Fears over Pacific 'debt colonies' as Tonga struggles to repay ...

Looks like they have us surrounded. I wonder how this compares to what properties they own? I remember watching on 60 minutes once about those two guys who were building a resort but got pushed off their land by the Chinese company next door, cannot remember which tropical paradise that was.

Undeclared Submarine Arms Race Takes Hold In Asia

Geez if China buddies up with North Korea we are in big toruble, poor little Taiwan is trying to keep their country out of Chinese hands.

North America accounted for $32.8 billion worth of foreign investment in Australian real estate last financial year while China claimed investment worth just $6 billion.

Yes Toot, they have to protect their investments, while China seems to spreading itself far and wide, the UK invests here in Australia quite a bit it always has done.

Nice photos of the waterfront mansions.

Reminds me of a visit from my sister in law, drove her passed some houses in Perth on her visit from Cape Town many years ago, she would not recognize these were peoples homes but said they must be apartment blocks, we had driven along the coast road through City Beach!

So we have both sides of the fence investing in Australia, who do we choose if all hell breaks loose, and they will be fighting over Australia, scary stuff.
