Queen arrives in Norfolk after making special pilgrimage ahead of the 70th anniversary of her father's death as she stays in Philip's beloved Wood Farm cottage for first time without him
The monarch, 95, usually spends the festive period at Sandringham, but has remained at Windsor Castle since the autumn as a Covid precaution and held muted Christmas celebrations with close family last month. In preparation for the anniversary of her father George VI in 1952, though, the Queen has made a special trip by helicopter followed by a short drive by car to Norfolk. A source told the Mail on Sunday: 'Everything is being put in order for the Queen's visit. 'We've been told that she will stay at Wood Farm, rather than the main house, which is nice as that always had a special place in his heart.
The Queen's very humble palace of magical memories: As Her Majesty makes a poignant return to the Sandringham hideaway adored by Prince Philip and so many royals, RICHARD KAY looks at life in the quiet idyll
RICHARD KAY: The Queen has decided to spend the next two weeks away from the splendour of Windsor Castle, in the modest surroundings of Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate. From the simply furnished sitting room where she likes to put a log on the fire, to the kitchen where she can often be found doing the washing up, this is the most unlikely of royal residences. But it is just the way the Queen likes it.
Very poignant time for the Queen.
Sultan of Brunei's Kingston University graduate daughter, 36, ties the knot in a week-long wedding culminating in a lavish ceremony at the royal palace - with the couple sporting glittering diamonds and matching brocade outfits
Princess Fadzillah Lubabul, 36, the daughter of billionaire Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, 75, one of the world's richest men, and his second wife Mariam Abdul Aziz, a former flight attendant, married Awang Abdullah Nabil Mahmoud Al-Hashimi in suitably spectacular fashion. Kingston University graduate Princess Fadzillah, the ninth of the sultan's 12 children, is captain of the Brunei national netball team and healthcare campaigner who stays largely out of the spotlight. The same is true of her mysterious new husband, who is described by one local tabloid as a 'handsome foreigner', but has otherwise remained a private figure.
A very lavish affair to say the least.
Prince William (left and right) has bid farewell to his beloved former polo teacher (who he is seen with in 2000, bottom) at her funeral following her death aged 77. The Duke of Cambridge attended the service for Claire Tomlinson, (also top) a former England national team captain and coach who taught him and his brother Prince Harry how to play polo at Beaufort Polo Club in Gloucestershire. William joined at least 200 friends and relatives yesterday at the service of remembrance at St Mary's Church in Tetbury, which is located in the Cotswolds a mile away from his father Prince Charles's Highgrove estate. The Duke attended the funeral with a royal protection officer, but there was no sign of his three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis who would have likely been at home with his wife Kate or at school. Mrs Tomlinson, who died at home on January 13 after a long battle with dementia, was so well thought of in the polo community that Charles asked her to teach William and Harry at her polo club when they were youngsters. Her sons Luke and Mark are good friends with William and Harry and were on the guest list for the royal weddings at Westminster Abbey in April 2011 and Windsor Castle in May 2018. She also had a daughter called Emma.

Such a pensive portrayal. Amazing price going so much above the expected price.
Nelson Shanks is very good it is a pity he has not done a portrait of HM the Queen.

PATRICK JEPHSON: We shouldn't hold back with the Queen's Jubilee celebrations: monarchy either lives in the hearts and experiences of ordinary British people, or it doesn't really live at all.
