Climate Change

I do beleive that human activity has and is affecting the climate. However I have to agree with the Federal Opposition from the point of view that it is better to wait until after the Copenhagen Conference before deciding on the best course of action. The Federal Government rush to have it passed by the end of the year was nothing more than political grandstanding so that Kevin Rudd/ Penny Wong could go to Copenhagen and tell the world how good they are (not) in getting the first scheme up.
As a young University student in the late 60's we were told of the natural cycles of cooling and warming of the planet and that we were and still are in a natural warming cycle. Evidence of that can be found in thge likes of Glacier Bay Alaska where the extent of the glaciers has been tracked since the mid 18th century and it has retreated a long way over 70 miles or so since that time in a steady progression.
That is not to say that human activity by way of the Industrial Revolution has not contributed to the an acceleration in the warming process. I would venture to say that human activity is a significant harmonic on the natural warming and cooling cycles the planet goes through.
In my lifetime I have noticed a significant change in the climate particularly since the acceleration in industrialisation in developing countries like India and China in the last 20 years. That is not to say that India and China are to blame, we are all to blame as we live more and more opulent lifestyles.
The highly developed countries laid the foundations for climate change in the last century with rampant industrial and economic growth based upon the use of fossil fuels for energy to support that growth.
We all have to take a step back in the industrialised world and take steps to mitigate our use of energy and processed resources.
However I am not sure that an Emissions Trading Scheme based upon taxation only is necessarily the best option.

I spend a lot of time on politcal forums in this country and overseas and the general view of Seniors by most of the much younger posters is that they are mostly incapable of thinking and are going senile.

Well I can only hope that these people do not visit this forum and see that what they think being practised by a very few who just like children in the school yard try to wreck any discussion about serious matters with inane remarks.

Now if you were paying attention and some were - 100 billion if the figure being bandied about at Copenhagen re paying for technologies for the third world and compensating them for climate change.

This will be made up of 7.5% of our GDP that for Phyl is the figure we produce as a country and what the entire economy of the world is based on for every country. Not Aldi's output but the output of the country in question. Our output this year makes the figure 7 billion if we get signed up to pay for 2009 - easy if you read and comprehend it.

Then and for the entire period of the treaty if signed every year add 2.5% extra of our GDP.

Not hard now is it if you pay attention.

Koko gave you the download link to get the entire package from the UNIPCC which is of course a PDF file and you will need a reader like Foxit or Adobe.

The 3.5 billion promised by Rudd to Indonesia and Malaysia etc is for not cutting down any more of their forest and on top of the amount due to be paid to the United nations for redistribution to developing countries.

Now off you go and wreck another thread and discussion because it is not worth my time to bother any further.

It is a pity that the mods on here are not willing to do anything to help the forum along and let a few wreck it - and also btw it is not possible to upload an avatar as needing fixing like all of the board it is old and outdated.

Good , see you later.

Like many others (I suspect), I am suffering "climate change burnout". I can understand how some people can become passionate and even a little obsessed with an issue and churn out heaps of facts/figures/statistics etc as well as quoting supporting reports/quotes/expert opinions etc, etc, etc. In support of their particular views or opinions.

We do however come to the point where some are just over the top, lose their sense of humour, become intolerant of the scepticism or indifference of others and pretty much get to the point of posting just to see their opinions in print and/or to push their personal political opinions.

Without wishing to "name names", may I respectfully suggest that we all do a little self assessment and give this matter a rest. Some points (arguably) worth considering are :- (1) most of us have formed an opinion and wont easily be swayed by continued argument. (2) Whatever our opinion, there is little, if anything, we can actually do to influence the outcome, (3) The opinions, arguments, evidence etc are getting mighty repetitive and (4) Others throughout the world (and much better educated/qualified than us) are already working on the problem.... and (5) For me, at least, serious though this issue is, it is now going around in circles and becoming just plain boring.

Take a look at our forum, just how many threads do we need on climate change/ global warming/ emissions trading etc.?

You still have not shown where you get these figures from.

Your comment on Aldi is sarcastic.

Lets B. Frank. - remember him?

Take a nice shower Big Val. What the dickens are you talking about?

If my being happy gets up your nose stiff cheddar.

I do not read your posts at all other than I was sent private messages to do so! and I am having a bit of a giggle.

***If you are not happy with this Board and Admins. that is up to you what you do****.

Climate changed today to quite cold down here in the Valley but still had a lovely day feeding the ducks on the lake...................................

I said nothing much about the Climate change re the World. Maybe you read someone elses posts and because you do "hate anyone being happy" jumped on me. ouch lol.

Do not read my posts so you do not get upset. I rarely ever read one of yours so you cannot upset me.

Have a great rest of the day folks!! Carols being played in the shops again today. Such a lovely time of year.

Phyl.

.

Seggie. Come on, love each other or take a shower together. Maybe that would be more fun?

Christmas was always a joy when we were kids. With families growing up, naturally it's not the same without little ones opening their presents.

We have to settle for what we have and be grateful. It's not always easy as we have found but we try to think as we will have plentiful food on Christmas day, think of those with nothing to look forward to. Weren't we all brought up to give rather than receive? We send you Christmas blessings and pray that 2010 will be a far happier year than this one. We'd hug you all if we could.

Hugs back atcha Seggie.

Your sentiments are spot on and Christmas will be great and there are always good things amongst the not quite so good things happen in each year.

May 2010 be fantastic for you and your family.

We wish we had grand kids close but we do not and as I say as long as they are safe and happy we are happy.

All the very best - life trully is wonderful.

...

Well said to you both and have a very happy Blessed Christmas............clay

Back to climate change, it has been questioned on here as to where the $7billion came from? I can't give a reference from the million pages on the subject, but I distinctly remember that the "New World Government" wanted .7% of the developed World's GDP. Our GDP is around $1010billion, making .7% at approx., $7billion. I think the extra 2.5% of GDP was misunderstood, & is based on the extra GDP this fiscal year, of approx., 2.5% meaning that our increased bill next fiscal year will equate to around $175million extra. Because I am doing some mental arithmatic based on memory, I am very much open to correction.

Thank you Clay.

May you and your family also have a lovely lead up to Christmas and a great Christmas and may 2010

be a very good year for you and your family and may you and your wife like us continue in good health and stay

happilyliving in and enjoying your home as we will ours for a long long time.

I will just add a little about Climate Change so maybe those who complain so bitterly if especially me goes off the windy track but goodness I can only say "I hope those who are able to do what needs to be done do it" while those of us who can do only the small things we can do in our lives all do these to help keep pollution down.

Money will always be involved and we cannot get away from this.

Phyl.

innes, you are correct in saying The DRAFT TREATY says 0.7% of GDP, not 7.5% as bigVal stated.

But remember that is a draft.

Now we have another leaked document.

extract:A leaked report by the United Nations has cast a dark shadow over any final accord made at the climate change summit.

The UN analysis reveals that the carbon pollution cuts offered so far will lead to global temperature rises of 3 degrees Celsius.

Many scientists and conservationists say that anything above 2C would be devastating for the planet.

For Australia it could mean water shortages and the near extinction of coral reefs.

Greenpeace China's Ailun Yang is amazed by that revelation.

"That would mean that millions of people on the planet would have problems accessing fresh water," she said.

"We will see an increasing number of extreme weather events such as droughts, floods and typhoons. And also a dozen of countries will simply disappear from the map of the world."

What a rude post that was BigVal.how dare you single out Phyl to vent your spleen on and talk down to ,with your sarcasm,,shame on you .....BTW ,I for one dont think that most of us need to be force fed with climate change in every post ....surely you ,and a couple of others must have other things in your lives to have a chat about instead of the same old same old no wonder people shoot through in a hurry . you have to be a glutton for punishment to hang in here for long periods

How kind you are Dusty. I have always admired your to the point, posts and indeed taken some criticism from you as I should, but you are never spiteful as a few on here have been.

The strange thing is Dusty, Big Val. bagged me when I did not converse much at all on Climate Change and certainly did not quote any of the figures she said I did and should read what Koko wrote. I can do nothing so leave all that to those that can, and just do my little bit re re-cycling and

any way I can stop doing anything in my everyday life could hurt our environment.

..............

You see I have these tendencies which like any affliction was probably born with, so I must be excused and if need be by those dislike finding something to be happy about every day just ignore my words at all cost. I am lucky enough to wake up every day to a new day and I refuse to be miserable if I can be happy. Does it really matter to Big Val or Koko if I say something happy in Every post?? Mea Culpa.

Thanks again matey.

Phyl.

Well said dusty.

Phyl brings joy to this forum and I for one do not like seeing a fun person treated, as BV used her sarcasm to belittle Phyl

Shame ......
