Climate Change

I do beleive that human activity has and is affecting the climate. However I have to agree with the Federal Opposition from the point of view that it is better to wait until after the Copenhagen Conference before deciding on the best course of action. The Federal Government rush to have it passed by the end of the year was nothing more than political grandstanding so that Kevin Rudd/ Penny Wong could go to Copenhagen and tell the world how good they are (not) in getting the first scheme up.
As a young University student in the late 60's we were told of the natural cycles of cooling and warming of the planet and that we were and still are in a natural warming cycle. Evidence of that can be found in thge likes of Glacier Bay Alaska where the extent of the glaciers has been tracked since the mid 18th century and it has retreated a long way over 70 miles or so since that time in a steady progression.
That is not to say that human activity by way of the Industrial Revolution has not contributed to the an acceleration in the warming process. I would venture to say that human activity is a significant harmonic on the natural warming and cooling cycles the planet goes through.
In my lifetime I have noticed a significant change in the climate particularly since the acceleration in industrialisation in developing countries like India and China in the last 20 years. That is not to say that India and China are to blame, we are all to blame as we live more and more opulent lifestyles.
The highly developed countries laid the foundations for climate change in the last century with rampant industrial and economic growth based upon the use of fossil fuels for energy to support that growth.
We all have to take a step back in the industrialised world and take steps to mitigate our use of energy and processed resources.
However I am not sure that an Emissions Trading Scheme based upon taxation only is necessarily the best option.

"Can people imagine poor old Tony Abbott over there uming and arhing"

I'd rather Abbott umming and ahhing than a pm who spits a tantrum because he hasn't got a hair dryer in the middle of a war zone...or doesn't get the right sandwich, and reduces RAAF staff to tears.

*************

Tony Abbott spends his vacations up in the north of the country, teaching children...he is also a volunteer lifesaver, and volunteer firefighter.

Can't imagine the other one doing any of that.

Might upset his hair, and boy! if he didn't get the right sandwich!!!

Toot, of course Mr Spencer doesn't get much publicity, with what is laughingly called 'reporting' the news here in Australia.

We can't have anything spoiling the media and pr managed image of the govt, can we?

I notice the pm managed to get to the Mary McKillop chapel immediately after the news that Blessed Mary may be canonised soon.

Photo opportunity deluxe.

But hey, no photos with Mr Spencer who is starving himself in protest at Rudd's policies. Not even an attempt to contact him and at least address the man's concerns.

Any figures can be bandied around???

The figure of $10billion is not just a figure being bandied around.

It is very real, and only the start if our sovereignty is signed away.

BigVal says we are going to pay 7 billion increasing annually,

You say 10 billion.

ok, what does 3 billion difference make - petty cash , LOL

"sovereignty is signed away." ?????

c'mon now, I could use Tony Abbotts phrase but to shorten it -- BS

Well said fwed. Great information in your big post also!

And oh my goodness gracious Heavens to Mergatroid. Fish are biting today.

Actually some very good specials on fish for Christmas if anyone is interested and worth looking around for.Such a beautiful day here in the Valley. Bought fantastic cherries just $5.99 a kilo Was going to buy Mangoes but think I will skip off to Gerry's place as surely his are ready by now.

All the best

Phyl.

Simply a typo.

Was going to buy Mangoes but think I will skip off to Gerry's place as surely his are ready by now.

Phyl.

Now Phyl, you must have inside information, yes they are ready.

Yesterday I caught my neighbour red handed.

He was on my property with a wheelbarrow and a 20 litre container both full of my mangoes.

he scuttled off with his wheelbarrow, his container and my mangoes when he noticed I had caught him.

Nothing like having to live next door to a thief

You went off topic Gerry bad you hey? Never mind I seem to be the only one gets in the shi!!

for this - you will be o.k. (I think you are cute as I am sure others do) and being male you can get away with heaps lol.

That neighbour sure has a cheek! Taking one or two mangoes maybe but SO many? that was not the decent thing to do at all. I only am asking for maybe 6?

Along with our cherries $5.99 a kilo and bananas for just 99c a kilo I bought a whole box of ripe peaches so my cute husband and I are having low fat cream and peaches for dinner. I will save our mangoes until tomorrow with the rest of the cream but of course we will eat two each sitting in the bath lol.

I have good skin anyway because of all the skim milk I drink every day but hey how fit also with all this fruit I ask?

Have a perfect Thursday arvo.

Phyl. the dill.

I don't think it is off topic Phyl.

I read in another topic that Gerry said the mangoes would not be ready till at least Christmas.

Seeing that they are early , it must be due to the warmer weather caused by climate change.

See

:gulp:

Is it a requirement that one preferably two eat mangoes.????

???? ?in the BATH ????? I think I will inform my "Better Half " That it is.????

A $3 billion "typo" Thank the lord you ain't the treasurer Koko lol. ?? ?

Hey Gerry, I see you live in a beautiful part of the world. Any chance of you taking a photo of your mango tree and puting it in here? Not to worry if you can't, just love mangoes and we can't grow them here in Sydney, well some clever people can but the climate isn't suitable mostly. You lucky dog.

Thank you Yaretzi for your kind words. :-P Wish we could get Male or Female somehow put on our names, it's very confusing, it makes a big difference, I don't know what gender you are :-/

Seggie.

Shame no politicians have the guts to talk to poor Mr.Spencer. Our sympathies are with him. It's absolutely disgusting that this gentleman's health would now be appalling. Forget your black balloons. Think of what he is going through. We wish we had the power of our convictions as he has of his. We only talk. He does.

It's his 24th day up there, I hope there is a doctor looking after him.

Seggie.

Thanks for your reply to the story, Seggie. His family must be so worried about him.

If you go to the link below, you will find the letter Mr Spencer wrote to the PM.

http://www.sosnews.org/index.php?page=Letter-To-PM

It is very sad but in most cases unavoidable people do commit suicide

Some and in fact fanatics for their beliefs and causes. Many we never can see the reasoning behind their wanting to leave this earth.

If the man does not want food or care leave him alone and hope he is doing what he believes in.

Most days in Cities there is someone sitting on the ground with a sign saying "on a hunger strike" wanting the Government to help them. Peter is getting publicity and that is what he is doing it for.

Starvation is rife in our world and we probably all could do a bit more at least and also children dying in orphanages unloved and with very little care. I am not advocating anyone starve for their cause because it would do little good but the world is full of people and causes needing help. I honestly cannot see how trying to hold people at ransom does much good.
