The ACT government wants to minimise the impacts of domestic cats on native wildlife by reducing the number of feral, unowned and semi-owned cats through more de-sexing, improved domestic cat welfare and management practices, better ways to identify lost cats and reunite them with their owners

Every year, free-roaming but owned Canberra cats are estimated to prey on 61,000 native birds, 2,000 native mammals, 30,000 native reptiles and 6,000 native frogs.

yippeee!  think all cats should be kept indoors.  That doesn't mean they are locked up, mine has the run of the house and part of the outside but cannot get to the birds or dick in other peoples garden and making messes in other peoples property. We have an on going war with our selfish runabouts about this.

I would like to see the Council putting fliers in everyone's letter box. There are too many cats wondering about.  I must admit the birds are a good alarm system because they start calling out when they are nearby. One cat was crawling up the tree next door to my place, I had to put the hose on as there was a bird's nest in it.

Hi Hola.

I think the average CAT owners are totally ignorant at what is going on with their cats.

It is not just the birds and other animals but the indoor cats are upset seeing another cat wondering in their garden and digging it upsets me too with the cat stink.

We have three litter boxes in our house and the wast can be put into the toilet if you purchase the right litter, the only smell is that of us humans when we use the toilet!

I have been busy of late with the various cat rescues and the amount of issues these feral cats cause is massive, it is cruel to let these cats wander around the drains of our suburbs.

Our Councils here in WA have had a Law for saw for some time that each cat has to be registered with them, the cats are also meant to be kept indoors after dark.   Of course selfish people take no notice and let them use the cat door in their laundry when they want to. So much so the people over the road have now got a problem with a visiting stray cat and they have fights inside their home with fur flying.

I have to wonder because he works for the local Council!  LOL

What the modern home has these days to keep their birds and wild live safe from sharp claws of cats.

How dreadful.

Once my husband took our larger poodle  [standard] out into the park across the road from where we lived and two large dogs attacked the standard poodle.  When he came home husband said the woman owner got them in her car and raced away!   He didn't appreciate the damage he had done to my dog, this was several years ago but the repair bill was $300 on the spot plus going back to the vets.

Very sad and not the first time dogs have attacked in Cairns from what I've read.

How to introduce a new kitten or cat to the resident cat!

How should I introduce a new cat or kitten to my existing cat? – RSPCA Knowledgebase

How should I introduce a new cat or kitten to my existing cat?

Cats can be very territorial and sometimes they don’t like change very much. Your cat is probably used to being the only cat around and probably had complete run of the house. Suddenly there is this strange other cat or kitten who, from the existing cat’s point of view, is just getting in the way. Whenever a new cat is introduced into a house with other cats it takes time for them to get used to each other, and your first cat might be a little jealous of the newcomer, so you need to take things slowly and carefully at first. The key points to consider when introducing cats are:

Introduce the existing cat and the new cat in stages – gradually increasing exposure time.Keep the new cat in a separate room for about a week so that the existing cat can become accustomed to their smell and presence and the new cat has time to adjust to their new environment. This separation and gradual introduction may help to reduce the overall anxiety of the situation and provides a good basis for the development of good relations. After the new cat has settled in to their part of the house you can slowly introduce them to the rest of the house by bringing them out for 10 or 15 minutes at a time under your supervision. Eventually they will be confident enough to wander freely around the house and the other cat should be used to them.In the initial stages there may be some hissing and tail swishing – but this should settle down after a few days.Ensure that the existing cat has an area that they can go to for privacy to get away from the new cat.Provide at least two litter trays.Allow the cats to eat separately.Ensure the existing cat receives a lot of individual attention from you.Be aware that it may take some time for a relationship to develop.

Not all cats will get on with each other. In situations where cats do not like each other in the long-term, they may still be able to co-exist in relative peace by seeking out their own space and spending most of the time on their own. Some cats have the ability to find a balance and share their territory. Having access to different rooms so that they may be alone can assist in these situations.

In rare situations where cats seriously injure each other or begin to show signs of severe stress as a result of being housed together, they may need to be separated. Your local vet can provide more information about available options in these situations.

A COVID-19 testing facility in Sydney's west had to be closed after unexpected, venomous, guests were found on its grounds.Employees at the site, in St Marys, spotted a number of red-bellied black snakes ranging from young to a "medium-sized" individual.

One snake was filmed slithering through a carpark before Australian Snake Catcher owner Sean Cade captured it using a wheelie bin and hook.

Mr Cade explained the multiple sightings weren't unusual for this time of year.

"The red-bellied black snakes may have misread RAT testing," he told 9news.com.au.

Feline strange! Pet owners share hilarious snaps of their cats relaxing in VERY awkward positions - from perching on top of a person's head to snuggling into a water jug

Owners share hilarious snaps of their cats sitting in the strangest places

Cats will sit in any spot they can squeeze themselves into, right? And the felines in this hilarious gallery, curated by Bored Panda, prove exactly that point. Among the photos, shared by cat owners from the US and the UK, is a moggy who enjoys sitting on top of their human's head. Another snap shows a cat cosying themselves up in a snug cardboard box, while a comfortable looking pet bed lies empty nearby. (Pictured from left: A moggy sits on their human's head, a very furry feline sits in a water jug, and a bold moggy perches on top of a yoga ball, on top of a cupboard.)

Incredible moment Great Gray Owl swoops in for his close up and perches on photographer's

A wildlife photographer got a surprise when the owl she was snapping broke the fourth wall by swooping down and landing on the lens of her camera. The Great Grey - the largest species of owl in the world - swooped down and landed just inches from Anaïs Trépanier's face as she stood poised with the viewfinder to her eye in Cote-de-Beaupre near Quebec, Canada. She had been trying to capture the magisterial bird sitting on a snowy fence in wintry conditions but stopped still when it took flight in her direction. Fellow photographer Thomas Pham-Van captured the owl making itself at home and not giving a hoot during the extraordinary moment as it preened itself fiercely. Thomas, 47, said: 'The owl took off and flew straight ahead and then made a loop to come back, heading towards Anais. 'I was already amazed to see this magnificent bird and have the privilege of capturing it in flight, but I was so surprised to see it perched on the camera lens.
