AstraZeneca puts COVID-19 vaccine trial on hold over safety issue | Coronavirus pandemic News | Al Jazeera

The Oxford University coronavirus vaccine trial has been halted because one participant in the UK has had a serious adverse reaction. A suspected “serious adverse reaction” means the participant may require hospitalisation. It could result in a life-threatening illness or even death. However AstraZeneca says the participant is expected to recover.

In studies of this nature, AstraZeneca said it is “routine” action when there is a potentially unexplained illness among participants.

Hopefully more participants will not be affected .. who knows if this participant has some other underlying health problem which was not established at the time he/she was chosen.. hence the reaction.

I am not worried about the trial being put on hold at all Sophie.

Like many who have high hopes for this vaccine I have only praise for the transparency of those testing the vaccine

WITH THE HELP OF AI.....

A new analysis of the world's leading COVID-19 vaccines and therapies in development has revealed that even the small group of vaccines already in phase three trials have only a 20 per cent chance of success.

The artificial intelligence-powered analysis from local health informatics and predictive analysis company Opyl has found that mRNA-based vaccines are the most likely to succeed.

It has identified the leading candidates as those belonging to the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) followed by the collaboration between BioNTech and Pfizer.

The third-most likely candidate of those already in phase three trials was Oxford University and AstraZeneca's vaccine, which uses a different approach centred on a non-replicating viral vector.

Opyl chief executive Michelle Gallaher told The Australian Financial Review this analysis was good news for the Australian government, which locked in almost 34 million doses of the AstraZenea  vaccine.

Brilliant work by this company. Artificial intelligence is the way ahead. I am excited! Thanks for the article Sophie, this is one I missed.

China has passed “an extraordinary and historic test” with its handling of the coronavirus, President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday at a triumphant awards ceremony for medical professionals decorated with bugle calls and applause, Reuters reports.

The nation’s propaganda machine has churned out praise for China’s Covid-19 response, reframing the public health crisis as an example of the agility and organisation of the Communist leadership.

Xi doled out gold medals to four “heroes” from the medical field in front of hundreds of applauding delegates on Tuesday, all wearing face masks and strikingly large red flower pins.

“We have passed an extraordinary and historic test,” Xi said, praising the country for a “heroic struggle” against the disease.

“We quickly achieved initial success in the people’s war against the coronavirus. We are leading the world in economic recovery and in the fight against Covid-19.”

ROFL, Trumpie must be purple with rage. He is promising his misguided followers a vaccine by the time he gets to the election n November.

Now that there is a setback with one of the most trusted ones, wonder how the Trump camp followers will feel about usng any of the other ones by November!

Donald Trump nominated for Nobel Peace Prize | World News | Sky News

Sky News

Donald Trump has been formally nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for his brokering of the historic peace deal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

President Trump is believed to have been nominated by Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a member of the Norwegian Parliament.

Oh my goodness!

Nominated by a right wing MP, don't think the Palestinians agree with him, but hey, Trumpie is wearing it already!

Donald Trump loses Iowa but wins Nobel Peace Prize nomination - MarketWatch

Not the first time he has been nominated..in 2018 he was nominated by the same right wing white supremacist.

Anyone can be nominated, the nominations require no invitations. This year there are 318 candidates!

318 candidates!!! I wonder if jackasses go to the front of the line LOL

Playing down the virus the way he did and being responsibe for the death of so many of his own people is no feather in the cap for a Nobel Peace Prize candidate.

If he wins, I shall never. along with millions, have any regard for this prize.

to be fair, Obama did not deserve his award.

Fair to whom...pray??

That's your opinion...obviously the Nobel Peace Prize Committee did not agree with your view.

But then Secretary of that committee later expressed regret at their decision so many share my opinion, including Obama with his then thin list of accomplishments

WA nurses to fly home after serving Melbourne quarantine following coronavirus infection - ABC News

So very sad about this wonderfu WA nurse who volunteered to help out in Victoria aged care. Renee Freeman has been diagnosed positive. Renee and the other six members of her team will be returning to WA in due course. My opinion is...all the nurses should return.

Now doctors say she may not have been diagnosed at all if she and the rest of her team of seven had been instructed to wear full personal protective equipment. This is amazing since it was reported they were taking their own PPE ..what did they take? What did the Victorian government supply them with?

"People don't catch COVID in hospital in Singapore," Australian Medical Association WA head Dr Andrew Miller said. They wear hazmat suits.

Why send people to a war zone without the correct equipment.

AstraZeneca CEO is awaiting official diagnosis on its Covid-19 trial participant who developed neurological condition BREAKING NEWS

Oxford University says trials of a coronavirus vaccine that it is developing with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca will resume, days after being paused due to a reported side-effect in a patient in the UK.

In a statement, the university said in large trials such as this "it is expected that some participants will become unwell and every case must be carefully evaluated to ensure careful assessment of safety."

It said that globally some 18,000 people have received the vaccine as part of the trial.

Good news.

Yes Lucca, great news. Hopefully it will continue to go without another hitch.

I see in the news today, Victoria's state of disaster has been extended for another four weeks, or is that old news?

Why were the details of the side effects of the patient in UK not reported ?

Probably because people might panic and draw their own conclusions.

The extension is new news Banjo. Until the AHs stop misbehaving and making it harder for those following the rules.

Telstra Media - Video, Sport, Music and Entertainment

Some details are emerging regarding the Oxford vaccine.

Investigators discovered the female volunteer had multiple sclerosis that was unrelated to the vaccination. Neurologists who study illnesses like transverse myelitis say this is rare occurring at a rate of perhaps 1 in 250,000 people, and strike most often as a result of the body's immune response to a virus.

What’s worrying also is a phenomenon called "molecular mimicry." In such cases, some small piece of the vaccine may be similar to tissue in the brain or spinal cord, resulting in an immune attack on that tissue in response to a vaccine component.

Hope the trial continuation proves successful.

Thank you for that illuminating information Banjo. I am disappointed not knowing how the woman is faring at present.

I imagine she must have recovered, hence the restart of the trial.

A woman who recently returned to Perth from NSW has been fitted with an electronic ankle tracking device after allegedly breaching COVID-19 quarantine restrictions.

The 33-year-old is the first person to be electronically monitored for a quarantine breach under measures recently introduced by the Western Australian government.

She had been allowed to enter WA on 1 September and was ordered to self-isolate alone at her home for 14 days, but failed to do so.

A man was also jailed for 8 months for breaching restrictions.

Good action.

Not enough, the army should be called in, water canons used so people can go and get their fruit and veggies in peace. Throw the assh***es into a camp and make them work. Imagine having to have police protection while you shop and sell your produce!!!!

                       coronavirus - 7AD

Coronavirus is continuing its spread across the world, with nearly 30 million confirmed cases in 188 countries and a death toll fast approaching one million.

Six months after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic, the virus is surging in many countries and some that had apparent success in suppressing initial outbreaks are also seeing infections rise again.

However, the number of confirmed cases during the spring peak is likely to be an underestimate of the true level of infection, as widespread testing was not available in many countries earlier in the year.

Some encouraging news at last from Victoria..

Forty-two new Covid-19 cases and NO new deaths for first time in almost to months.

Great news Sophie. Now here's one for the books:

A member of the Australian Defence Force who invited a guest into his Sydney quarantine hotel room has been fined $1000

NSW Police said in a statement today ADF officers working as security at the hotel on Hicksron Road in Sydney heard a female's voice in the man's room about 12.45am today.

The man in quarantine is a serving ADF officer who had returned to Australia from overseas deployment.

The woman was removed from the room and police were contacted.

The 26-year-old ADF member and 53-year-old woman were both given $1000 fines for breaching public health orders.

The woman was also directed to immediately attend a COVID testing facility and needs to self-isolate in her Hornsby home.

Hmm, he is 26 and she is 53 - is this a cougar situation or is the woman his mum!!

could also be a commercial transaction but does the age difference or nature of the visit matter?

What matters is, they broke the law...they are now $2000 out of pocket. Not good business sense!

You'd think a member of the Australian Defence Force would know better.

Yep he should know better than to carry on with a woman old enough to be his mother during quarantine!

According to Ch9 today,  the pair reportedly caught sight of each other through their windows. The two, who were strangers, are believed to have decided to become more “closely acquainted” after seeing each other through the windows of their respective rooms at the Sydney hotel.

It is believed the man, who was having a beer at the time, held up a sign with his mobile number and told her he was in mandatory isolation.

The woman, who was also drinking, then phoned the man. At some point, the RAAF officer snuck the woman, who comes from Hornsby in Sydney’s north, into his room.

You were right Lucca, lol

Don't jump to conclusions about the Oxford vaccine trial suspension | Coronavirus outbreak | The Guardian

Sep 16, 2020, 07:01pm EDT

Oxford University said Wednesday its coronavirus vaccine with British drugmaker AstraZeneca may not have caused an illness that led to the halt to trials earlier this month.

In an information sheet for prospective participants, Oxford University said, “After an independent review, these illnesses were either considered unlikely to be associated with the vaccine or there was insufficient evidence to say for certain that the illnesses were or were not related to the vaccine,”  Reuters first reported. AstraZeneca paused trials on September 6 after a U.K. participant developed an “unexplained illness.”

Trials have resumed in the U.K., Brazil and South Africa but it’s unclear if the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will follow, as NIH officials have said they are “very concerned” about the adverse illness.

AstraZeneca has not released any details about the situation, but the New York Times reported, citing an anonymous source, that the participant developed symptoms consistent with transverse myelitis, or an inflammation of the spinal cord.

Hi Sophie, well the reason is still not crystal clear and nobody is going to spell it out any time soon. Anyway, the bizarre news today is - Trump says by the middle of October there will be 100 million vaccines ready for the public. Just in time for the election, haha.

At the moment, it seems the safest bet we have is wear a mask.

Lucca, the head of the CDC agrees with you.

Redfield said face masks are possibly more effective tool in fighting the coronavirus and a vaccine would not be widely available until sometime next year.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/masks-may-be-more-effective-than-vaccines-cdc-director/vi-BB1970zN

https://ph.news.yahoo.com/vaccine-available-2nd-3rd-quarter-190924094.html

I agree with those views..I would prefer to see people continue the stringent wearing of masks rather than rush through any vaccine. There’s a very promising mask in the market place…

Reusable antimicrobial SonoMasks from Israeli startup Sonovia Tech now are proven to be more than 90 percent effective against coronaviruses and 99.89% effective against other viruses, even up to 100 washings. The cotton-polyester facemasks, come in four sizes, are infused with metal-oxide nanoparticles known to destroy bacteria and fungi, not just block them.

A Chinese lab has proven the metal-oxide infused washable facemasks destroy more than 90% of the novel coronavirus. Tests at the Microspectrum lab in Shanghai in accordance with international standards confirm that the nanoparticles also are effective against the novel coronavirus, Sonovia announced this week.

Another successful test of the SonoMask was completed last month at an Austrian medical lab using Vaccinia, a virus similar to SARS coronaviruses such as Covid-19.

Sounds good to me..

Israeli antimicrobial washable facemasks enter US market - ISRAEL21c

According to reports I've read, that mask is living up to all the claims made.

As for the Oxford vaccine, since the restart of the trial, the arguments have began who gets vaccinated first. It's going to be a mammoth task here in Australia. Hope they've got good plans in place.
