RIP Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and consort to Queen Elizabeth II, has died aged 99.

Born on June 10, 1921 in Greece, the Duke of Edinburgh was just months away from celebrating his 100th birthday.

The Prince of Wales, Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Wessex and Princess Royal would have been, by convention for a royal ceremonial funeral, in full military uniform

In an unprecedented about-turn, a last minute decision, approved by the Queen, has been made that no royals will wear military uniform in order to present a united family front.

Behind the scenes, courtiers have been racked by concern that Prince Harry, who was forced to give up his honorary military titles after he acrimoniously quit royal duties and moved to the US, would be the only senior royal not in uniform.

Prince Andrew will be disappointed, he wanted to wear an Admirals uniform.

Prince Harry and Meghan welcomed their son Archie Harrison in May 2019, while Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindall both gave birth to their sons, who they named after the Duke, last month.

What a delightful photo of the family.

Saw that the Queen released this ... such a lovely natural photo.

That too is a lovely photo. I wonder what the tradition is for the Queen to be wearing Pearls for ever and a day?

Best photo I've seen so far.

It is a delightful photo and apparently Sophie Wessex took it.

I think there's a lot we don't know about the Duke.

What interesting photos Celia. Prince Philip had such an Angelic face.

Great photos Celia.

She's left Buckingham Palace for Windsor, is allotting mementoes from Philip to family, writing to friends on black-rimmed cards... and a 'soft' new regency by Charles has already begun. RICHARD KAY's remarkable portrait of Her Majesty as a widow.

They had spent their last weeks 'reminiscing like mad', sifting through family photographs and old cine camera film which the duke had had digitised.

Mostly they just chatted, especially after Philip's return from hospital when his failing health meant he slept for much of the day.

Only once did they seriously disagree when the Queen suggested they might look at some of her husband's oil paintings. Philip firmly refused.

One day, not long after Prince Philip's retirement and when he was living alone at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate, the Queen had remarked to one of her Windsor staff: 'Do you know, I haven't seen him for six weeks'

Now, and for the rest of her life, she will reign alone ¿ and many wonder what kind of monarch she will be for these twilight years of this second Elizabethan age

As keenly as Philip's death is felt, there will be no such lengthy period of public sorrowing for the Queen. Indeed there is every chance she will resume official engagements sooner rather than later

For the Queen Philip's absence will be profound. In the days and weeks ahead the goodwill and gratitude that people feel for her personally after nearly 70 years on the throne will perhaps be her greatest comfort      For the Queen Philip's absence will be profound. Lovely photos, thanks Celia.

Thank Sophie, great photo.

I remember that on BBC black and white tv!  Nice to see the children [as they were then ] with their fathers mother.

Here is the Princess again with an older Charles...from all accounts they loved her. After Princess Alice left the psychiatric facility where she lived for many years...Prince Philip invited her to live at Buckingham Palace with him and the Queen...

Princess Anne is also in that photo.

Andrew Cowdery, then 21, hit his head during a swimming pool dive in 1984, leaving him paralysed

Prince Philip spent years supporting a young man after he was paralysed in an accident the night before they were due to compete against each other in an equestrian event.

The tragedy happened in 1984 when Andrew Cowdery, then 21, had a life-changing accident after hitting his head during a swimming pool dive.

He had been due to compete against the Duke of Edinburgh in a carriage driving event at Windsor Great Park the following day but instead was fighting for his life in hospital.

When the Duke heard what had happened he immediately offered his extensive sympathy and support to Andrew and his family - and continued to do so for over 25 years.

Encouraged by the Duke, Andrew, who finally died in 2010, was able to rebuild his life after the accident and go on to enjoy a fulfilling and highly-regarded career writing about the sport that had brought them together.

When I saw this photo just now I thought 'gosh she is like Princess Alice'  Philips mother!

Toot - Thanks for that photo. I sat up all night watching the funeral. Everything was done with dignity and the whole service was befitting a great man.

Always wondered why Prince Harry was never made a Knight of the Garter or Thistle along with his older brother and uncles?

RnR -  Yes it is a sad photo.  Although Prince Philip had time to work out how he wanted his funeral to

be, his wife has probably arranged her funeral as well.
