Hi RnR

Yes my relatives over in the UK said the BBC were just playing music when they contacted us yesterday, most of the country over there has been affected by his death, which surprised me.  In the newspaper this morning that said the following.

The Duke's Defender 130 Gun Bus: This Defender Gun Bus, built from a Td5 130, was commissioned by the Duke of Edinburgh in 2005. After a 45-minute meeting at Sandringham with the Duke this design was created, Land Rover said. It is understood the vehicle that carries his coffin will be similar to the one picture here +92

Why so much of what you think you know about Prince Philip is wrong: ANDREW MARR says the Duke of Edinburgh was sensitive, shy and self-critical

ANDREW MARR: Sensitive. Shy. Self-critical. A moderniser and a radical who loved poetry and philosophy... The Duke of Edinburgh was always an outsider.

Is that rust bucket going to transport the prince to the happy hunting grounds? you are forgetting this is an r.i.p thread.

The Land Rover 'hearse' is a fitting tribute to Philip - the nation's longest consort - who was known for his practical skills and his enduring interest in design and engineering.

The purpose-built Land Rover was specially modified to carry a coffin - in a project that the duke helped with many years ago.

The vehicle will process slowly through the grounds of Windsor Castle ahead of the funeral, draped in his personal standard, a wreath of flowers and his naval cap and sword.

A bearer party from the Grenadier Guards will place the coffin on the Land Rover at the state entrance of the castle, before the vehicle begins the eight-minute journey at walking pace to the west steps of the chapel.

It will be flanked by pall bearers reflecting the duke's special relationships with the military - the Royal Marines, Regiments, Corps and Air Stations.

Immediately behind the Land Rover, the Prince of Wales and other members of the royal family, likely to be the duke's other children and some of his grandchildren, will proceed on foot.

The Land Rover's poignant role in the funeral proceedings always formed part of Operation Forth Bridge - the codename given to the plans following Philip's death.

What a fitting tribute to Prince Phillip Celia.

Arrogance personified.

Andrew spoke as well-wishers arrived to leave floral tributes outside the gates of the royal residence in memory of the monarch's late husband.

He couldn't resist it, he wanted to be seen as important again.  The man hasn't enough sense to realize his appearance just reminded the world of how his  behaviour brought shame on his family.

No defending this guy one bit, but do try to remember he has just lost his father.  I think we can suspend hostilities for a short time.

Rest assured, he will be banished again once this is all over.  Lillibet won't be reinstating him any time soon and if she does, it will be over Charlie's dead body.

Where will the funeral take place?

Prince Philip is reported to have requested a funeral of minimal fuss and will not lie in state - where members of the public would have been able to view his coffin.

Instead, he will lie at rest in the private chapel at Windsor Castle until the day of the funeral.Aerial view of Windsor Castle

The duke's coffin is draped in his personal flag, his standard. The flag represents elements of his life, from his Greek heritage to his British titles. A wreath of flowers has also been placed on the coffin.

When the duke got engaged to the then Princess Elizabeth in 1946, he renounced his Greek title and became a British citizen, taking his mother's anglicised name, Mountbatten.

The Mountbatten family is therefore also represented on the standard, alongside the castle from the arms of the City of Edinburgh - he became Duke of Edinburgh when he married.

Graphic showing duke's standard, cap and swordWhat will happen on the day?

The duke will have a ceremonial funeral, rather than a state funeral. There is a subtle difference - state funerals are usually reserved for monarchs, although wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill was given a state funeral. The Queen Mother had a ceremonial funeral in 2002, as did Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997.

Coronavirus restrictions on crowds and numbers attending funerals mean the duke's ceremonial funeral will be much lower key than if it had happened in other times - although the Palace says this very much "reflects the duke's wishes" and it will still "celebrate and reflect" a life of service.

On the day of the funeral, the coffin will be moved from the private chapel to the State Entrance of Windsor Castle. It will be placed on a modified Land Rover, that the duke himself helped design, to be carried the short distance to St George's Chapel.

Funeral procession route to St George's ChapelPresentational white spaceAt 14:40 BST, the coffin will be carried out onto the Quadrangle and placed onto the Land Rover.

At 14:45 BST, the procession begins. The Land Rover, will be flanked by pallbearers from the Royal Marines and other regiments and corps associated with the duke. Members of the Royal Family, including the Prince of Wales, will walk behind the coffin. The Queen will travel separately to the chapel for the service.

The procession, led by the band of the Grenadier Guards, will move from the Quadrangle to Chapel Hill and down to Horseshoe Cloister.

The route will be lined by personnel from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, The Highlanders, 4th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland and the Royal Air Force.

Guns will be fired by The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery from the East Lawn throughout, as a bell tolls in the Curfew Tower, at the west end of the castle.

At 14:53 BST, the Land Rover will arrive at West Steps of St George's Chapel, and met by a guard of honour and band from the Rifles Regiment, who will play the national anthem.

Members of the Household Cavalry will line the West Steps and a Royal Navy "piping party" will pipe a nautical call known as "the Still" as the coffin is carried up the steps to the chapel.

The coffin, draped with the duke's standard, with a wreath and the duke's naval cap and sword on top, will be met by the Dean of Windsor, together with the Archbishop of Canterbury, for the service.

Only the members of the Royal Family and the duke's private secretary will enter the chapel - the rest of the procession will remain outside.

15:00 BST: A minute's silence will be held nationwide, in memory of the duke.

Inside the chapel, the funeral service will begin as the coffin is carried to the Quire, and placed on a platform called a catafalque.

The duke's insignia - medals and decorations awarded to him by the UK and Commonwealth countries - his Field Marshal's baton, Royal Air Force Wings and insignia from Denmark and Greece will be displayed on cushions on the altar in St George's Chapel.

After the service, the duke will be interred in the royal vault.

What I find sad about the list of mourners there is nobody representing Prince Philip side of the family they are all Windsors except for the prince's equerry.  There are those that live at Broadlands.

Celia, I doubt there is anyone left of Phillip's family.  He was not a Mountbatten by birth, he just adopted their name.

Broadlands is the Mountbatten family home.  Lord Mountbatten was Phillip's uncle (i.e. his mother Princess Alice's brother).  That's why he went there to live for a time.  Surviving Mountbatten family members would be very distant relatives.

Still a Mountbatten family representative would be a better choice than Princess Pushy, but these decisions are out of our hands.

Yes I am aware of all of that Johninmelb, but there are still  cousins there that he communicated with and did the carriage riding with also Lady Louise did too.  Princess Pushy as you call her, is Prince Michaels wife.

It was Prince Michael and Prince Philip that gave their dna to Russia to verify that the bones they found in the Russian forest Yekaterinburg were the Romanoff family that were murdered prior to their burial.

Both Princes had mothers from the Russian royal family.

A family resemblance ... I hope his return alleviates concern rather than exacerbates them.

RICHARD KAY reveals the most intriguing royal friendship of all between Prince Philip and

RICHARD KAY: Theirs was, perhaps, the most intriguing, most unlikely relationship in the entire royal drama. Prince Philip was a decisive and worldly man whose frankness Princess Diana admired, the only man in the House of Windsor, she felt, who actually listened to her. She once wondered out loud to friends: 'How many other wives would discuss their marital problems with their father-in-law instead of their husband?' A total bludger, never worked , never paid a cent in taxes, a nothing, a nobody

Ronjohn that is not correct he was the exact opposite to the word bludger, you need to do some reading on the topic.

yep ronjohn that's why he is not getting a state funeral and being taken to the happy hunting ground in a rust bucket.

ronjohn he was a member of the couragous generation who sacrificed so much and served to defend our way of life. Show some respect to another veteran who did his duty, what have you done to protect and serve your country?
