Labor's next leader?

Anthony Albanese appears to be an uncontested favourite to take on the role as the new federal Labor leader.

His position as frontrunner was reinforced after possible contender Chris Bowen withdrew from the contest on Wednesday afternoon.

So far it is a one-horse race, unless another potential cnadidate Jim Chalmers decides running as deputy leader is not enough. Mr Chalmers said he is still deciding on whether he'll contest for the top job and will announce his decision Thursday.

According to The New Daily, Mr Bowen said he did not think he would have won the leadership contest against Mr Albanese.

“I’ve been on the phone to colleagues. I’ve been very pleased with the response – it’s clear to me that I would have majority support in the actual caucus ballot,” he said.

“But it’s also clear to me – I’m a realist – that Albo would win the rank and file, for good reason – he’s a popular character … Hence I have reached the view that it would be unlikely for me to win the ballot.”

Unless another challenger comes forward a ballot can be avoided and the new leadership team put in place swiftly.

Who do you think is the best person for the job?

Albo seems a decent enough chap...will be interesting to see how he performs as Opposition Leader.  Shorten did not want him to get the job so I would not be turning my back on him!!

Dunno why you guys are knocking these nice Labor people. So they're having a bad time at the moment, give them a few years to recover after the next two elections and they will be back on their feet. By then all the kids will be grown up and off their hands and more time can be spent making plans for the future, if there is any left!

Nominations don't close for another four days, so you never know who else might think they have a chance.

Albanese would be far more popular that Shorten was and with some forward thinking and tweaking of their less popular policies, I can see them tossing the Libs at the next election. I also think that had Albanese been the leader, Labor would be in power today.

Watched Albo speak

he’s a bogan

needs a lot of refining before he can become a statesman

surely Australia can’t accept someone who can’t carry himself well on the local let alone world stage

and then there’s his far left views - a catastrophic disaster for the country

At this time it is pure speculation about the level of success Albo will have selling Labor policies, because we dont know what those policies are? Labor policy these days seems to unduly favour public service and unions. Labor regularly puts the spotlight on CEO salaries but in many cases the Public servants and union bosses are in that same class.

Labor needs to step into Hawks shoes if they are to become any good

Australia’s Jacinda Ardern would be Labor MP Linda Burney if she ever gets the top job. A beautiful human being who I had the pleasure to meet many years ago. She has integrity, compassion and fine values. I would love to see her lead the Labor party and become the PM Australia could be proud to have in the future.

Regrettably, Mr Albanese is part of the hard left faction and that means a continuation of the easy, divisive, rhetoric of slack and hardline left politicians: the politics of envy (now aimed at the vulnerable old) and the class war.  On the plus side, he can be pragmatic.  But there will be no centre ground for the many conservative Labor members who don't sign up for that old stuff.

UK Labour Party

'Nothing would induce me to support a candidate from a major trade union, they stick it to the ranks and file members time after time after time. It’s also time to support disaffiliation of the unions from the Labour Party'.

The fact that our Labor Party and the union movement are joined at the hip is unpopular to many but sometimes, we need a union, especially for the kids who are expoilted in the kitchens of restaurants and cafes by greedy employers, there doesn't seem to be any middle ground regarding unions and the Labor Party.

Labor’s leader in waiting Anthony Albanese will be forced to jettison the hard-left policies he has espoused for more than three decades, with former party heavyweights questioning his passionate stances on asylum-seekers, boat turnbacks and energy policy.

Mr Albanese, a democratic socialist from Sydney’s inner west who is set to assume the leadership unchallenged, has become close to far-left British Opposition Leader Jeremy Corbyn.
