Books I have read

I'm sure we all have favourite books we have read over the years, one of mine is Lord of the Rings, which I have read at least half a dozen times.A good book for me is when I become one of the characters and nothing else matters. There are so many books that I'm having trouble remembering them all and I've always thought the book is better than the movie...

I'm just off to the library...I wonder what books I'll come home with me today?...It's been quite a week so I may get a couple of mystery and mayhem , something I can shift the old brain matter and solve a murder or two...

Just love reading what these delightful characters have to say. You make me smile.

Please keep it up, my mother is also reading the antics of Cranky, Peanuts, Black Duck and Ray and has a good laugh.

Asante (Swahili for Thank you).

Your mother sounds delightful Bridie, give her my best wishes,if what we say in here can bring a smile to anyone's face then I think we have done our job......Asante......with big hugs and kisses to your mum....xx

Bridie, thank you for the compliment.I try to keep things light, don't go looking for trouble, that's my motto, cause trouble will find you anyway.

Like my other mates, I send a big hello to your mom, wish her well and glad she loves to read. Whenever I can I lose myself in my many adventure stories. Sometimes I wish I was an author, oh well, it costs nothing to dream.

Asante my friend!

Asante to you too Bridie, lovely to read a friendly post. Is your mother a book reader as well?  Say "Hello to her from Peanuts."

Peanuts my mother loves reading, she can't get out much these days but she has Books on Wheels  from her local library.  I will pass on your "hello" she'll be very pleased!

Hallo Bridie, Lighthearted banter is so easy to read and digest Bridie, and I am another one who sends your mum greetings...This lot up here seemed to radiate toward each other from the beginning .....The door opened and ..and they were swept in by a broom......lol  We hope more soon join in as there are millions of books out there and a lot more smiles..I dont know where Ray is , I think our friend is trying to finish war and peace before commenting....lol..

Here I am cranky, kept busy today running a few errands for the wife. We're having the grandkids over soon and have to stock up on food. You know how it is, they eat us out of house and home when they come over!

Agree with you cranks, it's much nicer to have fun and create a good feeling than to fight and mobilise an army. Spread the love I say. Catch ya later.

PS Been reading war and peace for 10 years and only half way!

Good morning Bridie and Bridies MUM!..lol 4 .5 degrees in Hobart this morning so it is definately  going to be a book day in my house.Bridie does your mum read Maeve Binchy? When i volunteered in an opshop most elderly ladies adored this author...i used to set those books aside for a couple of ladies who used to call in on pension day for their weekly reading material.Have a wonderful day wherever you are...Peanuts

One of my very favourite Authors peanuts. It starting when I was hospital and the lady in the next bed gave me Circle of friends..I was hooked..and at this very moment I am reading "Light a penny candle". only read the first couple of pages, so I have yet to meet the characters, but by the end of mauves books they are all dear friends...

Good morning Cranky ,Black duck and Ray, hope today brings nothing but joy and peace to you guys. How is your cold progressing Black duck ,hope you are getting on top of  it. Enjoy those grandchildren guys..they grow up far too fast.  Cheers,

Peanuts

Good morning my little peanuts, glad to see you are all well today. Black duck try my home remedy for your cold, ginger and peppmint tea - even if it doesn't work at least it will keep your tummy warm.  I plan to read another page of War and Peace today Cranky, at this rate should finish it in another 10 years!

A slight improvement of my cold thankyou Peanuts.Ray thank you also for your home remedy,I've always found these to be far nicer to try rather than some of the yukky stuff from the chemist and probably do less harm.Love the warm feeling that ginger gives too...

The very first adult book I got out of the visiting village library was Thirty Nine Steps by John Buchan but needed to get my fathers permission because I was only 10. Then Somerset Maughan caught my eye .....

Nothing like having a good read before going to sleep but saw recently that using a tablet before going to bed can affect quality of sleep? Wonder if anyone who reads all books on Tablets find a difference in sleep patterns?

Vivity

A lot of research has been done and is still being done about the bad effects electronic devices used for reading and browsing the web before bedtime have on people’s sleeping patterns.

The biological effects, the researchers noted is that people who use these devices stored less melatonin. Melatonin is the hormone that should “naturally” rise at night and cause sleepiness. Due to the decreased  melatonin levels, because of the effect of these electronic devices and staring at the bright lights of e-readers, tablets etc readers saw a delay in their circadian rhythm of more than an hour. In some cases it takes people about two hours to feel sleepy. Also advised not to recharge your mobile phone in the bedroom.

Thank you Ray had heard that about Tablets and had found them not so relaxing as reading a real book at bedtime, what is interesting is the suggestion not to charge a mobile phone in the bedroom presumably even if turned off so wonder which wavelengths are of concern.

Sorry that is all a bit off the book topic maybe if We want to look at that further we need a different topic set up.

Vivity

Electronic devices including mobile phones use blue wave lengths, although blue wave lengths are good for us during the day, they are very disruptive during the night. Even when you’re not actually using the phone and only charging it, it’s still working against you. Even using a digital alarm clock next to the bed is not a great idea.

We have a table outside the bedroom where we charge the phone and have our alarm clock. Our alarm is set on the ABC so we’re woken up by nice music (nice to us anyway!). It’s good too because having the alarm outside of the room, means we have to get up to switch it off!

Not at all vivity, That is extremely informative, and still related to books... but now ray has me concerned....and I have taken all this on board...I just have to remind myself I have to plug myself in and recharge in the kitchen prior to going to the bedroom, and climbing into bed to sleep for the night...LOL

Thanks for that information Ray...I always had my suspicions about those devices...used to have a small TV in the bedroom...that's out of there now!

I have read both of those Cranky  and yes i really enjoyed them, another author that writes well is Catherine Cookson..and if you want something a bit more challenging that you wont be able to put down read "The eighth" by Katharine Neville..just brilliant.

I will look for Thirty nine steps Vivity... thanks for the heads up. I have a tablet but have never been able to swap my paper books for a tablet, love the act of turning pages too old to change.

Like you Peanuts I have a Tablet and also a Kindle ....... But tried both just not the same as a real book.

I love Detective stories and Murder mysteries. I find I work my way right through the books one author has produced and then have to find a new Author. There are some pretty good Swedish Detective stories around and set in  a country I have never been to adds a bonus.

Two books about Australia

Secret River by Kate Grenville.  A boatman on the Thames steals some timber and is transported, eventually pardoned and given land on the Hawkesbury River.

and

The Light Between Two Oceans.  Tom returns from WW1 with bar memories. He takes a job as a lighthouse keeper on a remote island in Western Australia.  Tom meets Isabel who joins him on the island.  After two miscarriages and one still birth, a boat washes up with a dead man and a living baby.  Against Tom's better judgement, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy.

Those sound good Toot thank you, will try to reserve them at the Library.

Saw the Secret River Toot2000 on TV recently. Superb and a real eye opener.

Writing all these books down for future reference..

I love English writers, especially mysteries and murder set in the villages...I read 'Goodnight Mr. Tom"by Michelle Magorian a few weeks ago..Just my style of book..and I also reread Jamaica Inn, by Daphne d'maurier, for the fourth time, probably due to visiting Bodmin Moor on a dark, foggy and mysterious night and going into the same Inn as depicted in the story finding it filled with characters that could have come straight out of the original book...All my ancesters I suspect,as I had an instant repore them all, including the parrot that knew far more swear words that I .... LOL

Wow how good this topic has become, Thanks for that info re charging the phone Ray, i must admit i am really  guilty of this as i use my iphone  as an alarm clock..I will have to rethink this..lol Toot thank you for those book suggestions love the sound of The secret river Kate Grenville writes really well. The Light between two oceans sounds like a good read too, suspect it may be a tearjerker..Vivity i recently returned from a long overseas trip, one of the countries i visted al but briefly was Sweden, i fell in love ♥

Sweden is breathtakingly beautiful  i would go back again in a heartbeat..

Visiting Sweden sounds a dream would love to see Finland too. Stieg Larsen has just put out a new book " The girl who kicked a Hornets Nest" but if you like detective novels have you read any of Henning Mankell series of Detective Wallender? Great descriptors of Swedish countryside along with interesting detective stories.

What an absolutely charming thread...it's like a little dream come true to see people being so nice to each other!

The other day I was going to have one of my long goats' milk baths and wanted something to read...couldn't think what....then I noticed on the book shelf a trilogy by Bryce Courtenay given to me last Christmas: The Potato Factory, Thommo and Hawk and Soloman’s Song. So…I grabbed the Potato Factory and headed for the bathroom. I soon lost myself in it…love Courtenay’s knack for story telling and the way he draws you into the story. Almost finished that one and am looking forward to reading Book 2 of the trilogy.

I normally don’t read a lot of novels…but do enjoy fictionalised historical novels.

The Potato Factory was a great novel Fleur and yes great to be able to chat on here without feeling an attack on someone might be imminent. Good to know there is a Moderator who will act quickly now.

I believe it will be a little while before I get Mary Abacus out of my mind Viv...such a compelling character....and I think I'll always remember Ikey Soloman's words  "Always leave a little salt on the bread"...
