Who won the first 2020 US presidential debate?

Despite repeated attacks, Trump is giving little away about his second-term outlook," said US political commentator Dr Luis da Vinha.

Anyone watching the first debate witnessed an incumbent bullying his opponent, and a candidate willing to engage the public.

"The first debate of the 2020 US election was a very (un)Presidential Debate," said the Dr da Vinha, a lecturer at Flinders University.

"The first presidential debate in the 2020 elections revealed two candidates with markedly distinct styles and views of America.

"Joe Biden demonstrated that, despite his age, he had prepared for the debate, offering data and specific proposals for the country.

"President Trump, for his part, came to the debate with his usual chutzpah, touting his administration’s accomplishments over the last four years. Without providing any details of his alleged achievements, the incumbent president continued to claim that the U.S. had never been so good than under his administration. Despite his bravado, Trump however did not provide a path forward regarding the priorities for his second term. He spent most of the debate attacking Biden’s record and trying to portray him as the figurehead of the “radical left”.

"Overall, the debate was marked by overt hostility, creating several cringeworthy moments for the American public.

"True to his style, Trump repeatedly interrupted Biden and personally attacked his character and his family, making him pivot from his manage on several occasions. While Biden also interrupted his adversary and threw several personal jabs at the president, he took several opportunities to speak directly to the American people, trying to establish a personal connection with the electorate.

Dr da Vinha went on to question the need for these types of debates.

"Nine in 10 registered voters said they were already certain on who they would vote, the debate will contribute very little to the election result. If anything, it just confirms the polarised and dysfunctional nature of the current American political environment."

Did you see the debate? How did it make you feel?

I have recorded it -- not that I have faith in any of them --

What a shamble!!!  IMO Joe Biden won....no question. The idiot (Trump) should have been locked in a box and only let out when it was his turn to speak.

As for the moderator...he was not strong enough and should have been able to shut Trump up...mind you... that would be a difficult task for anyone.

Americans if you know what's good for you Vote Biden!

Just watched it, yep shambles is putting it mildly. A shame Biden had to retaliate but it must have been very hard putting up with all the interruptions from Trump. Hopefully the next two will be more orderly.

I'm told T shirts with the words "Will you shut up man" are selling like hot cakes!

I really hope decent Americans took umbrage at how Trump brought Biden's son into the mix...so disgusting.. when his own sons hunt and kill animals.

Miss Buttinsky - hunter biden is pathetic as is biden - go trump and so say my friends in swing states

That was not a debate, it was a couple of chidren having a squable.  Does no one know how a debate should be managed.

Agree. I've seen kindergarten kids speak and behave better than this. I actually could not watch this debacle had to turn it off after about 8 minutes. Was just too embarrassing and disgraceful, makes Australia's parliament question time look civil, decent, respectful and intelligent. God help America if this is the best the can come up with.

Actually, it has nothing to do with 'best'. It is 'the wealthiest'. You need a few billions to run.

Watched the whole thing this arvo on iview. Found it really hard to spend so long being inflicted by the ugly personality of Trump. A disgusting bully, a vile man who dominates to the point of leaving no space for any 'other'. No wonder his wife, Melania, appears to be so hollow! I thought Biden did the best job he could but even the moderator fought for space against Trump and Biden strikes me as rather a gentle and mild mannered person so he seemed a little overwhelmed by Trump's aggression. God help America if the people vote Trump in for another 4 years! He is a very dangerous man who will drag the country down the drain completely in my view. Don't think I could stand to watch another one of those debates.

I tend to agree with you Ny19 -- Go help us all with ALL the clowns we have running this planet --

I agree with both of you it was sickening to watch. And these people say they are great leaders of the world,  I don't think so.

I thought it was unpresidential but entertaining.  The Don makes Biden look like an idiot.  Hopefully and for the good of the free world Trump will win th next election and put another nail in the coffin o the marxist socialist democrats.

The Don has done many great things and has only been held up by the China virus.  If the economy and law and order are the big issues of Americans then the don wins - simple.

Gee the last 5 years hae been great - breixt, trump, johnson, scomo and hopefully trump again - the socialists must be going crazy and couldn;t happen to a nicer bunch of morons

Good news:  The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Wednesday that it would add “additional structure” to the remaining faceoffs between President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden after Tuesday night’s chaotic clash in Cleveland, saying “more orderly discussion is needed.”

Donald Trump’s vice president (Mike Pence) and Joe Biden’s running mate (Kamala Harris) will face off against each other in Salt Lake City on Oct. 7, in the sole vice-presidential debate of Campaign 2020. Like all three presidential debates, the Oct. 7 match-up will run from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Eastern time, without commercials.

The moderator will be Susan Page, the Washington bureau chief of USA Today.

This will be good...not to be missed!

Well guess who will win that debate? No need to have it really is there?

Humour me KSS, whom do you think will win?

I am hoping it's Kamala Harris.

Why are Australians so caught up in the politics of another country when we have so many problems right here? There is the COVID-19, containers being held up with life saving medicines, state borders being closed, youth suicide, loss of employment and the rising costs of goods and services.

The issue of contaoiners being held is is disputed by the wharfies who say they are not as allowance is beiung made for them. Statements have also been made that there is a queue of ships waing to berth but included in those numbers being wquoted are ships stiil almost a week away from reaching Australia.

A bit of facts sometimes can be enlightening.

Horace Cope...

Australia’s economy depends on global trade. Australia does not possess a global naval force capable of protecting maritime trade routes. This means Australia must have a tight relationship with a country that does. For much of Australian history, that was the United Kingdom. Since 1945, it has been the United States.

Next to the UK, America is the largest source of investment in Australia… US investment in Australia is currently A$860 billion and in reverse the US is the single largest destination for Australian overseas investment.

Therefore it is wise and proper for Australians to take an interest in what is happening in the US...we stand to lose a lot should Trump win the coming election

Yes..we have our problems in Australia, but that's our own housekeeping, nothing at all to do with any other country.

Tanker, regardless of where the 'truth' is, the MUA should NOT be agitating for a pay rise at this time and fuelling their demands with work stoppages and refusal of overtime. There are millions out of work and these clowns earning between $150,000 and $200,000 a year are demanding 6% increase for 4 years - now moderated to 2.5% for 4 years.

Add these ridiculous demands to the ABC who are now agitating for a 2% increase themselves and it is clear both sectors are tone deaf!

Thanks Tanker, my facts about the wharfies is correct. I didn't go into their need for a 6% pay rise for each year over the next five years or their average pay which is five times the average age pension or their one week of paid leave each four weeks or their five weeks annual leave or their 35 hour week, all of which the average Australian would like to have.

Miss Buttinsky, do you honestly believe that America would walk away from the ANZUS pact? They didn't over the last 4 years of Trump so why would we expect him to walk away should he be president for the next 4 years. Countries invest in Australia because it's profitable and for no other reason.

Anybody that knows anything about industrial bargaining knows that an opening gambit figure is given of approximatley 3 times the amount wanted, this gives the employer group a chance to save face by bargainig down the Union.  It's a game.  And not a very well kept secret.

SCOMO knows this, he is just playing politics.  He loves attacking the working man, it makes his finnancial backers happy.

Condidering that the USA has a population of over 300 million, why can't they find better candidates than Trump and Biden?

They can't find an honest candidate who has the billions of dollars required to run.

The state of U.S. politics should have all Australians concerned given how we are considered to be closely aligned to the U.S.

We have not shaken off the "Deuty Sheriff" title which damages our independence in the eyes of the rest of the World.

Yesterday's debate was a disgrace to the people of the U.S. they don't deserve that altho' Trump was voted in. Their political system is not truly democratic as it is subject to political donations and its voting system being distorted. Neiter of the major parties have covered themselves in glory in recent years and Lincoln's Republican's have, if anything, disgraced themselves.

I suspect that we are seeing the end of the U.S.A. as we remember it but most of the Americam people don't realise that yet.

In my opinion Australia has be come the 51st state of America our politicians ( or so called leaders ) are just doing the bidding of the money tree(America). The only leader worth any accolades is the Prime minister of New Zealand

I have absolutely no interest in US politics.  Our politics are bad enough.

What has Mr Biden in 47 years in politics, most recently 8 years as Vice President to Mr Obama?

A complete train wreck!!

Actually was pretty disappointed in the choice of moderator as well, who seemed pretty ineffective overall IMO...

At  times felt it was more a bung fight amongst the 3 of them all talking at once rather than a debate between two people...

Trump was dreadful but both failed to impress..
