Flax Seed Oil - Frequently Asked Questions

What is Flax?

Flax is the common name for a herb of the Linaceae Family. Flax used to be one of the major sources

of cloth fibre (Linen) until the cotton industry took over. The oil is extracted from organically grown flax

seeds using a special cold-pressing process which minimizes the damaging effects of light, oxygen

and heat.

What is Flax Seed Oil?

Seeds from the Flax plant, native to Eurasia, are crushed to make Flax Seed Oil, often named

Linseed Oil.

The dietary essential fatty acids common to Flax Seed Oil are converted by

the body to Prostaglandin’s (a hormone like substance) which are

important for regulating the following:

• Steroid Production & hormone synthesis, pressure in joints, blood vessels and the eye, blood clotting

ability, water retention, Inflammation Pain, Nerve Transmission.

Why Should I Consider Supplementing With Flax Seed Oil?

Our bodies are unable to produce the essential fatty acids (EFA’s) contained in Flax Seed Oil. In order to

gain these we must consume this natural substance through dietary or supplement consumption.

Surveys prove that around 80% of the population is deficient in EFA’s. Commercial refinement of foods

containing fats and oils has almost eliminated EFA’s from our food chain. Flax seed oil is unique as it

contains both essential fatty acids, alpha-linolenic (an Omega-3 fatty acid) and linoleic acid

(an Omega-6 Fatty acid) in generous amounts. Flax seed oil is one of the richest sources of Omega-3

EFA’s. It has 57% more Omega-3 fatty acids than fish oils.) EFA’s are needed for the body to make

“Prostaglandin’s” which are hormone like substances. There are two EFA’s that we need: Linoleic acid

This I can believe Phyl.. for ages I have been battling blood pressure and doc keeps putting the strength of the meds up and up.. my legs are not working too well and I am sure its because of those meds.. what do you suggest is a good natural remedy to help cure blood pressure,.. I have started taking.. linseeds. sunflower. oatbran and also ground almonds.. we also have walnuts as remember you saying once you took them each day.. any thing else we should be using I am hoping to try to get healthy again as at the moment my legs don`t move too well. and had to have an MRI and Ct scan today on my knees and lumbar ,,, I tell you I didn`t like that MRI machine.. its frightening.. never again am I going to go through that.. thanks for all the nice posts you post here Phyl... and others they are all so interesting.. when I have time I come here .. or when I feel well enough and really enjoy it .. I also love your avatars your clever Phyl.. and Seth yours is a beauty too.. and love lots of the others as well..

Hi Raine. It really IS a big problem knowing what to take and taking the advice of the Professionals but sometimes they are very closed in their opinions and I do sometimes wonder if they are being subsidised by the drug companies to push certain drugs.

..

When I went to get my Trial 2 months supply of Pradaxa the new Doctor took me to the Doctor's cupboard to see if I recognised the box as she had no idea where it was and I was absolutely amazed at the amount of drugs in their cupboard. (I really do not think I was meant to see it to be honest).

..

Not nearly as many people were thought to have high blood pressure hence on pills to bring it down as recently. Now everyone over the age of 45 is supposed to take blood pressure lowering drugs it seems, but some are dangerous and for me I have a pacemaker to stop my pressure from dropping too low and so fainting or passing out while asleep BUT the doctor had me on Blood Pressure Tablets  c.r.a.z.y. while on the tablets to help my Arrhythmia hence the pressure would be too low so what on earth were the blood pressure tablets doing to me I ask. Thank goodness I took myself off them BUT in saying that blood pressure is a killer so some people must be on meds. for it.

..

The Statins cause many people to be almost crippled and I refuse to take them  so I take heaps of natural stuff to hopefully keep my cholesterol down and been taking Bergamet the Italian orange tablets and Garlic caps. so tomorrow I wll know if the expense is worth it :)

..

Always nice to see you Raine and sorry you are going through tough health times like most of us with something or other :) What can we do other than just get on with what we have to have and know the sun will come up tomorrow and yesterday is gone :) Hope Frank is doing well.

All the very best

hugs

Phyl.

The MRI and CT scan are so necessary and you need to have them done Raine and you will again.

Just breath and take yourself to a happy place and do not let the feeling of fear well up that is the main thing yes panic can take over if we let it, but not really necessary as you can always get out,  just have a look before you get in and look at the thing and say "Hi you lifesaver you I will not be afraid of you, you handsome hunk" lol.

Have a lovely night.

Phyl, I hope you do not think that I was telling you what you should or should not do - that is your own choice.

What I feel is that it is wise to let your doctor know what extras you are taking so they can guage if they conflict with anything they might be prescribing to you.

I realize that some doctors have made mistakes but I would consider that they are very much in the minority as without doctors many of us would not survive.

Raine, I am of the understanding that Cellery helps to lower blood pressure as well, I know I have to be careful with it as it sends mine too low if I have too much of it.  Phyl will probably be able to confirm or correct me on that one.

Phyl, you are so right about GPs not wanting to know anything about alternative medicines,  when I told my GP about my migraine treatment she wasn't interested, her response was, "Oh well we'll see what happens" in a very not interested tone, it's been nearly two years now since I've had a migraine and that's not bad since I was getting them every two to three weeks.  Funnily enough I actually got a letter from my GP telling me I need some tests done as it's been so long since I've had the last ones done.  I haven't needed a Dr since my migraine treatment so it didn't just fix the migraines it fixed a number of other niggling complaints as well.

My sister missed a chance of survival from cancer due to many years of mis diagnosis by a  Melbourne Dr,  by the time it was picked up over here it was too late. Grrrrr.  I always recommend a second opinion,  my sister believed he would know his job.

My American penpal had a choice when she had an MRI because she had panic attacks in the enclosed machine.  They have open x-ray machines.  Maybe they're only available over there.

Deanna you are beyond lucky to be rid of the migraines.

I believe some and even maybe many Doctors prescribe medication at the drop of a hat and a lot of it just does not work for many of us. I would never say anyone should experiment with stuff like Peter and I :) i.e. Resveratrol,  Deer antler velvet, Bergamot, MSM  etc. etc. etc.  and if anyone thinks anything is a miracle tell us and more than likely will travel to get it lol. Are we crazy? maybe but we love our life and if it kills us "what the heck" we have had great fun doing what we do.

...

Some years ago we sent to England for something supposed to be fantastic and it WAS expensive :( did it work? don't think it did much lol. What fun waiting for the parcel though. Yeppitty takes all kinds to make a world but thank goodness Peter and I are on the same tram and love what we do.

For omega 3 these are the usual sources,

http://www.readersdigest.com.au/good-sources-of-omega3/

If I didn't care I wouldn't waste my time finding and posting those links.

Thank you for the links Nautilus. All information is great to have.

I did ask my Doctor  yesterday about the blood thinner I am on and she knows nothing about it and says "eat plenty of garlic and plenty of ginger" and I said "are they blood thinners" to which she answered "Oh yes they are" so what do doctors know about everything? no more than most of us do ourselves it seems. Very difficult to know what on earth to do regardless we are told, but it does not always seem the right information at all.

..

We eat well and particularly I am slim and have MANY pieces of gym equipment (embarrassing to be honest) lol just what we have,  and our tablets and capsules we take every day reach long ways right down a kitchen table lol. It is our hobby as we do not drink alcohol (I know boring) and do not like eating out (germs lol - boring again) and neither of us like travelling with us still trying to get out of going to Qld. next year for a few days (was going to be March but thank goodness now MAYBE November) as we just love our home and everything we have (yes we like possessions lol)  We are unusual,  but who cares as long as it is just what we choose to do and it is,  as we can go anywhere or do anything  if we wanted..

Have a wonderful day. We were going to the outdoor Farmers Market but it has rained all night and still raining so there will be no market today.
