Flax Seed Oil - Frequently Asked Questions

What is Flax?

Flax is the common name for a herb of the Linaceae Family. Flax used to be one of the major sources

of cloth fibre (Linen) until the cotton industry took over. The oil is extracted from organically grown flax

seeds using a special cold-pressing process which minimizes the damaging effects of light, oxygen

and heat.

What is Flax Seed Oil?

Seeds from the Flax plant, native to Eurasia, are crushed to make Flax Seed Oil, often named

Linseed Oil.

What are the Benefits of Supplementing with Flax Seed Oil?

The dietary essential fatty acids common to Flax Seed Oil are converted by

the body to Prostaglandin’s (a hormone like substance) which are

important for regulating the following:

• Steroid Production & hormone synthesis, pressure in joints, blood vessels and the eye, blood clotting

ability, water retention, Inflammation Pain, Nerve Transmission.

Why Should I Consider Supplementing With Flax Seed Oil?

Our bodies are unable to produce the essential fatty acids (EFA’s) contained in Flax Seed Oil. In order to

gain these we must consume this natural substance through dietary or supplement consumption.

Surveys prove that around 80% of the population is deficient in EFA’s. Commercial refinement of foods

containing fats and oils has almost eliminated EFA’s from our food chain. Flax seed oil is unique as it

contains both essential fatty acids, alpha-linolenic (an Omega-3 fatty acid) and linoleic acid

(an Omega-6 Fatty acid) in generous amounts. Flax seed oil is one of the richest sources of Omega-3

EFA’s. It has 57% more Omega-3 fatty acids than fish oils.) EFA’s are needed for the body to make

“Prostaglandin’s” which are hormone like substances. There are two EFA’s that we need: Linoleic acid

USING FLAX OILDon't use flax oil for cooking. Oils high in essential fatty acids are not good for cooking. In fact, heat can turn these healthy fats into harmful ones. Add flax oil to foods after cooking and just before serving.source

Apologies, Kfchugo.  Just realised the KFC was meant to be  you.

I am grateful for all help.

Thanks Koko. I felt that was so and will not heat the oil. I just wanted to use it in lunch toasted sandwiches but in the griller type toaster which really boils the oil  so will not,  and just keep taking it cold.

You're welcome Phyl.

Flaxseed oil is also excellent for dandruff/dry skin in dogs.  True!

When I brought my girl home at 8 weeks, she had dandruff, which is common in the breed, and the flaxseed oil cured it quickly.

Hmmm...seems to be the answer to a lot of our problems.

Where do you get it?

SO many things are supposed to be great Sparkles so I suppose we all have to keep trying :) We buy Flax oil from Woolworths in a bottle near the health  nuts and things usually, and only around $5.50 a 250ml bottle - just a teaspoon a day - Peter takes it straight from the spoon but I have to mix with a bit of juice or cordial.

All the best.

Phyl......you seem to know a lot more about this than I do. I remeber Linseed oil from my school years doing woodwork. We used on "oil stones" when sharpening tools. I know nothing of its health benefits or dietary and nutritional value, but its great stuff if you need to sharpen a chisel.

Puts fingers 'round KFC's throat but nah a good mate for to long

to strangle him lol.

Phyl. cooking up a storm.

kfc, that's what I remember using it for, sharpening axes by oiling the stone with it.  Arrh the memories.

What use are the flax  seeds then? showing my ignorance on all things healthy :) :) :) and what are you cooking up in that 'storm' Phyl??????? :) :)

Read my original post Deanna for what flax seed oil is supposed to be a wonder oil for helping people Deanna.

..

Tried the bi-carb soda and soy sauce Dusty Tadpole advised re soaking steak in  for some hours and then cooking, and Peter and I burped most of last night lol. I know I know VERY un lady like to burp BUT with a stomach full of bi-carb soda a girl has to do what a girl has to do :( Yes I did wash the steak well before cooking but that bi-carb impregnated it beyond any soaking could get out lol.

..

Near 1 a.m. so maybe time for bed.

I was wondering about the seeds themselves Phyl, we have a packet in the cupboard here and not sure how or with what they should be eaten, or do I ground them for the oil? LOL

Just chuck the seeds (a few at a time when you want to use them) in your mortar and Pestle) and put them into anything i.e. cereal (We grind almonds and flax seeds  and even  put it into home made meat patties - so becomes very similar but much cheaper and maybe fresher than  L.S.A.

..

Many seniors and all ages take L.S.A  EVERY Day. :)

Thanks for that Phyl, I really so need to get up to speed with all these 'good foods' that you have........so now where's that mollasses?????? LOL

Linseed oil was a medium used in making lead based paints,

also good for cleaning paint off your hands instead of min. turps.

You are right seth, I had forgotten about that.  it use to sit on top of the paint after it had settled for a while, as kids we use to have to stir the paint until it had all mixed in, this is when Dad and Mum were building the first house on the farm.  Weather board and asbestos.  We use to cut the asbesto with a saw as well......mmmmmmm,  time bomb ticking LOL

If taking a blood thinner, be wary of flax oil.

as it can cause bleeding.

That's interesting seth, certainly won't be giving it to my Hubby then, geez we only need to look at him and he starts bleeding.....

Flaxseed oil  contains 50 - 60% omega-3 fatty acids in the form of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). That is more than is contained in fish oil, but the body is not very efficient at converting ALA into the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils. So ALA from flaxseed may not have the same benefit as  (EPA) and  (DHA) from fish oil.

My personal belief is that it is best to consult your doctor or dietician before taking these remedies.

Well said , Fwed.

We have been taking heaps of stuff for too long to even remember and on telling doctors,  they  agree know very little about any Herbal stuff  or potions or lotions not on their prescribing list and I know for sure if I was still on the blood pressure tablets I was told to take when on Beta Blockers to help my Arrhythmia I would be dead as advised by another Doctor. Mostly I feel do what feels right for yourself is the go but that is what Peter and I think and our choice of course.

...

I should be on Statins  by one doctor's definite advice many years ago as I just make too much cholesterol but the leg pains made me almost unable to walk so I went off them and onto natural stuff I found myself, and a couple of years later sent a message from the first Doctor to never take the Statin I was prescribed. Similar to Celebex messages from the Doctor stop taking it.

Who knows what is right but once the kids are grown does it matter? as long as we are happy and we may even find a miracle. Many people die on doctor's Prescriptions along with self medication and with or without taking anything lol.

..

That is true Phyl, Dr's can make mistakes and big ones

like that poor women losing the wrong twin, and so lost

them both. But I do think that where there could be an

unwanted outcome, caution is called for, if it doesn't affect

your health. I know only too well about Dr's mistakes

as I think I have mentioned before, of how I came to have

a pacemaker.
