Portable Air Conditioners

This is about the ones with the exhaust hose, as opposed to the evaporative water ones.

Just wondered if anyone has purchased one of these & struck trouble. We are renters & cant put a proper a/c in .After much thought we went to one of the larger chains here in Qslnd, they asked us what we wanted & what for i.e. bedroom. They told us the one we were looking at wasnt big enough & consequently we bought a larger size.We asked all the pertinent questions as to noise, efficiency etc. & were told this would do the job.
When we got home after finding a few hassles as to fitting it in, we finally did a temporary job to try it out. We have only a 5 square bedroom, it struggled to get the temp down by 3 deg.& then switched straight back on. To top it off ,it was like trying to sleep with a Motor mower going full pelt by the bed.
Saturday we were in another electrical chain store & lo & behold, all their stock of these sort of airconditioner had a sign on them saying " Personal Coolers only, will not cool a room down "
My husband went back to the shop where we bought it this morning & was laughed out of the shop, & told he should have been sure before we bought it, it was now second hand.{ it was on at the most for 3 hrs } we were prepared to take a price drop & maybe a credit in the shop for the rest, but no go. Any comments !!!

Thank you for your support. I have been in touch with Fair Trading & waiting on what happens next. Also told the retailer this, their comment was," Go ahead, we are covered " It seems that because they told us in passing to be VERY sure it was what we wanted as their policy was no return, they think that covers them. We will see what happens, thank you all.

An update for all those who helped me in this. Fair Trading got back to me. Their report was that ,they have many ,many complaints about these airconditioners, including the retailer we purchased it from.

There dosent seem to be anything I can do unless I am willing to follow it to Court case, which I cant.

The good thing is, & thanks to all who put me on the right track, that my complaint is noted & passed on to the retailer, so hopefully it will stop some poor soul being caught like me. In the meantime ,well,

Anyone wanting to buy an airconditioner, LOL.

Thats appalling Tweety that they are able to get away with this and you are told that you have to spend more money and time to get the right thing done--take it to the media--ACA or such most times they do get things moving

Thanks for that PlanB,but,I dont want to take it any further. Its been a big enough hurdle for me to get it this far, I just cant take it any further.

We learn from our mistakes & I have learnt a lot from this one. The main one for me ,is how I can always get support from you good people on here, when it all gets too much, it helps to have someone to talk about it on here.

Believe me thats a bonus. xxx & oooo to you all.

Maybe out the story on here -it is a site that helps others avoid the product and the trader and can also be used for stating your experience
