Portable Air Conditioners

This is about the ones with the exhaust hose, as opposed to the evaporative water ones.

Just wondered if anyone has purchased one of these & struck trouble. We are renters & cant put a proper a/c in .After much thought we went to one of the larger chains here in Qslnd, they asked us what we wanted & what for i.e. bedroom. They told us the one we were looking at wasnt big enough & consequently we bought a larger size.We asked all the pertinent questions as to noise, efficiency etc. & were told this would do the job.
When we got home after finding a few hassles as to fitting it in, we finally did a temporary job to try it out. We have only a 5 square bedroom, it struggled to get the temp down by 3 deg.& then switched straight back on. To top it off ,it was like trying to sleep with a Motor mower going full pelt by the bed.
Saturday we were in another electrical chain store & lo & behold, all their stock of these sort of airconditioner had a sign on them saying " Personal Coolers only, will not cool a room down "
My husband went back to the shop where we bought it this morning & was laughed out of the shop, & told he should have been sure before we bought it, it was now second hand.{ it was on at the most for 3 hrs } we were prepared to take a price drop & maybe a credit in the shop for the rest, but no go. Any comments !!!

tweety, I am not sure where it is written but there is a law somewhere that covers this.

Maybe drop an email to the ombudsmans office.

I know that all purchases are covered by some warranty, different to the one you get with the purchase. This sounds a bit vague, but it is true, maybe someone else can provide further info.Good luck Lolih

Tweety,

Ring Consumer Affairs in your State. All states have them. Just put Consumer Affairs and your state in Google and it will come up with a number for you to ring.

The business made false claims to you and the machine is not designed for what you wanted so you have a good case and I'm sure Consumer Affairs will act on your behalf.

That sounds like good advice Sandikay

I think consumer affairs are now called-- fair trading--if something does not do what it stated it would you should be able to get your money back

Stick with it Tweety as you have the right to get what you wanted and the seller

has the responsibility to give you the right advice. Often when a person goes back

and says "this is not what I thought the product will do" the seller has been taught

to make the person buying feel it is their fault and often they are given a disc to listen

to with all manner of complaints from the buyer and the seller given a set of answers.

Fair Trading is the go and often initially "in a quiet tone telling the seller you ARE going to

to do this" will make them realise you are dinky dye and give you satisfaction.

You will win this one as an Air Conditioner is one thing we all ask for the right advice on, when buying

and if it does not do the job it has to be changed for the right one...

All the best

Phyl.

The key words here are

"Sold as fit for the purpose intended"

Shopman told you it will cool a room, afterward changed his tune and called it personal cooler.

This is a clear and blatant breach of advertising and product promotion. Where it gets hard is when the Shopman says to fair trading - "I told him it wasn't suitable - he just didn't listen".

Have a look at Aldi, they have a portable A/C for $400.00 with 2 year warranty.

Even if unsuccessful, it would be sensible to go to the Dept of Fair Trading. They record complaints and if several people complain about the same kind of shonky sales tactics, future complainants will have a better chance. Merchants that have a history of complaints are less likely to keep getting away with it.

thank you all for your good advice. I will give Fair Trading a go.

To clarify for Emma, unfortunately the sign I saw for Personal Cooler was at a different store to where we bought it, But, when we pointed it out to the first store they said " thats just their opinion "

Does anyone think its worth approaching Dimplex, [ The brand ] if all else fails, to see what its supposed to be sold as. I will let you know results.

A thought, seems to say something when I cant find anyone else with one who likes them, I am in Qslnd.

tweety, it wouldn't do any harm to approach Dimplex--and may I ask what the store was that sold it to you and where.

This is a customer review site for the Dimplex. 75% of customers were not happy with what they had bought.

You can read their complaints at the above.

Thank you Sandikay for the Website which I have just visited. There sure are a lot of unhappy people out there. Unfortunately there was only one review for the one we have got,& even though it didnt say a lot it certainly didnt like it at all.

PlanB thank you for your input, I feel I shouldnt say the where & when at this stage, as I have just sent details to Fair Trading & waiting to hear back.

I found that Fair Trading is the place to go. I had a TV, which failed to work after one week and I was told by the retailer that I would have to have it repaired. I contacted Fair Trading and then the manufacturer/distributor and told them I had been in touch with Fair Trading and amazingly, within a couple of days, I had a new TV delivered and installed. Did the same with a washing machine that had a two year warranty, but which failed after 12 months. That time I didn't even contact the retailer, just Fair Trading and the manufacturer/distributor. Had to wait for a new washing machine to be sent from WA to NSW, but eventually got the new one. Seems they don't want to get on the disapproved list at Fair Trading.

Yes I have had a couple of times that I was getting nowhere with a company and mention fair trading and they change their attitude

Seggie here. Hi Tweety. Hope the Office of Fair Trading have helped you. This problem with firms makes one's blood boil. They think they are talking to idiots and think you will go away.

I know the evap.portable types are only personal 'coolers' but we've experienced with a family who were renting, the hose type through the window, refrigerated airconditioner. It was really throwing out really cold air and kept four of us on a lounge, cool. Naturally it didn't cool the entire room but it was a huge room. We purchased a split system airconditioner as one of our family was very ill and needed to be kept comfortable. After the installers left, we noticed that the plastic casing was very marked. We contacted the firm many times, they eventually sent out a man who said 'they are all the same'. We didn't believe him at all as even our visitors remarked about it. More calls to no avail and finally said we'd contact Fair Trading. A few days later, the head man came out and took one look. He was asked 'would you be happy with this' and a week later, a replacement unit. Tweety, let us know how you get on. We are all interested as the 'little person' is a target for those with no heart. All the best.
