Pensioner housing

I would like an opinion on the availability of Aged Pensioner housing. I have been told by Housing, that the waiting list is 12 years.Hubby & I dont mind where we go ,but, cant even get any idea from the powers that be,as to where we could possibly apply for that may have not such a long waiting list.We live rather isolated, & as only one of us drive it is becoming very apparent that we need to be closer to doctors etc. we are aged 76 & 70 , & have no close family.
I know we can be put on an emergency list if we have life threatening problems. Our problem is just getting old.
Private rental is all but impossible on our income of the Aged Pension.
Are we expecting too much from the Government when we see all around us others who seem to get housing no problem, Are they just waiting for the older Australians to go away & Die. Would welcome your opinion even in the negative.
Further to this,
We live in Queensland, Northern Gold Coast. Though we are isolated as to neighbours, Public transport & amenities,we are only 10 km from a major town.I enquired at Housing recently as to our position on the list as we were told on applying that the waiting was 3 yrs, we have been on for two. We were hoping to change our options & be nearer our kids up on Sunshine Coast,I was told the list up there was 12 Yrs. After I picked myself off the floor, I then asked where we were as to the area we were living in, I was told we had now gone up to 8 yrs here. Thanks for the interest, it all helps.
