Pensioner housing

I would like an opinion on the availability of Aged Pensioner housing. I have been told by Housing, that the waiting list is 12 years.Hubby & I dont mind where we go ,but, cant even get any idea from the powers that be,as to where we could possibly apply for that may have not such a long waiting list.We live rather isolated, & as only one of us drive it is becoming very apparent that we need to be closer to doctors etc. we are aged 76 & 70 , & have no close family.
I know we can be put on an emergency list if we have life threatening problems. Our problem is just getting old.
Private rental is all but impossible on our income of the Aged Pension.
Are we expecting too much from the Government when we see all around us others who seem to get housing no problem, Are they just waiting for the older Australians to go away & Die. Would welcome your opinion even in the negative.
Further to this,
We live in Queensland, Northern Gold Coast. Though we are isolated as to neighbours, Public transport & amenities,we are only 10 km from a major town.I enquired at Housing recently as to our position on the list as we were told on applying that the waiting was 3 yrs, we have been on for two. We were hoping to change our options & be nearer our kids up on Sunshine Coast,I was told the list up there was 12 Yrs. After I picked myself off the floor, I then asked where we were as to the area we were living in, I was told we had now gone up to 8 yrs here. Thanks for the interest, it all helps.

Elsie what state are you in please we might be able to Google it--

Thats a good idea PlanB and I am surprised indeed that the wait is 12 years .............Maybe the isolated area that you live in Elsie has something to do with this

Housing is difficult for everyone, but particularly senior pensioners. I think maybe some lateral thinking to the problem would be a beginning. Why not start a register of senior pensioners living on their own who would be prepared to share their home with other pensioner/s. This could have the twofold effect of an elderly person staying in their own home, raher than a nursing home, and solve someone elses problem of where to live. The Government would need to ensure that there was no financial loss to either party, ie reduction in pension etc. because both parties would be saving the taxpayer in the long run. I also think that children who provide for their elderly parents, eg a granny flat, should be allowed a tax break for doing so, to encourage more families to provide for their elderly parents. I'm not saying these are the solutions, but conventional answers are notm solving the problems. The difficulty is getting the Government to care enough about elderly prople to start thinking how best to assist them.

I am only surmising so maybe not much help but if a person does not mind where they live there are small Seniors flats at such places as Koo-ee-rup, Foster etc. in Victoria and lots of places in similar out a bit areas.

Wouldn't it be fairly easy to have a flat out a bit? There could be areas not so sought after is what I mean.

Maybe it is VERY difficult but I do feel there must be places a bit further out albeit of course has to be near conveniences Seniors need. If I needed to find a place I suppose like you Elsie are, starting to do go right into it.

Good luck in finding a wonderful place to spend the best time of our lives in health and happiness.

Phyl.

Housing of the aged and disabled does not seem to be a priority for any State Government. I am one of the fortunate, in that I do have public housing and have done so for the past 30 years. I know that I would not be able to afford private rental accommodation. There is no way that I would want to have any-one else in a share situation with me. It may sound good in theory, but in real life, it would be hell, even with my best friend.

Are we expecting too much from the Government when we see all around us others who seem to get housing no problem

No you're not expecting too much. In SA the Housing Trust only caters for those in diabolical state, who could never retain private rental housing. Youngsters who have severe mental problems induced by drugs ( Schizophrenia etc). Plus they are selling off a lot of houses because of the incredible debt the Trust has amassed

Yes.

Not too sure that this is correct especially when you consider that they are pulling down quite a few of the older Trust homes and building small compact units and more than one per block of land

From Elsie in reply to all, I am enjoying the discussion & thank you all.Thank you Phyl,I would be only to willing to go out a bit ( in Queensland ) but Housing wont even tell me where to apply ,unless I know where there are units available ,I am stymied before I start. Obviously cost of moving is a factor, but within the state we probably could get past that.Like BevG I dont think sharing is the answer,we all get set in our ways as we get older. If anyone up here can tell me where there are vacancies, I would appreciate it. Thanks to each & every one of you, you are making my heart sing to think someone cares. :-)

I would not be one to share either Elsie but of course what suits us is not what suits others

- makes the world go round.

It is difficult I can see that. Just wondered if you brought up different towns say a bit further out and e-mailed them (less costly than being told to hang on via the phone) and asked you never know there could just be the place there for you both where you would love. It is maybe worth a try - have a look on the net at places and see if there is a way to contact anyone. Just a thought. It is often the squeaky wheel gets the oil or the cranky kid gets the chocolate to shut it up as the saying goes....

Sorry I am not much help.

All the best keep in contact as who knows what someone knows any time to help..

Be good but have fun

Phyl.

thanks Phyl, I will try your advice

Sure, correct me if I am mistaken Clay, but I am under the impression the Housing Trust is offering some of their refurbished stock to owner occupiers? Hence the drastic shortage?

Try this link

http://www.housing.qld.gov.au/contact/offices/index.htm

It shows where all the housing offices are then email them and ask for a list of the area they cover. They will also give you an approximate waiting time. Best of Luck

Maroussia that is what I meant and thought there would be. I am sure Elsie will find that very helpful. I know there are different waiting times for different areas here in Victoria and in some out lying places (some years back so may have changed some) a shortage of people wanting to move in.

Phyl.

I believe there are Housing Associations, and Housing Co-Operatives all over Australia.

They are all different as to age, marital status, pensioners etc.

I suggest Google it, headquaters in Sydney I believe. Social workers also have housing links as also your local MP.

If you can't find any of these please come back and i will have a look as i have done it for a friend.
