Melbourne's 367 Collins Street falcons 2022

Birdwatchers have awoken to discover two peregrine falcon eggs have hatched, after the first cracks were reported yesterday morning 29 September 2022.

The chicks' biological father has been ousted by a new male who has only recently started showing paternal instincts. The original male, known as Dive-bomb Dad, still has not been seen despite the arrival of his chicks. Victorian Peregrine Project founder Victor Hurley said, "He's now gone from the scene, being chased off or killed by the new male, who hasn't produced any of these eggs with her."

Lovely family photo ... thanks Suze.

Not long now.

Accorging to Victor Hurley

"Based on the “average” Peregrine Falcon males take their first flight (fledge) at age 35 days post hatching

and females fledge at 42 days post hatching.

This is because the females are larger and heavier and need longer (and larger) wings to carry their 30% greater bulk to fly.

The first nestlings in this year’s brood hatching on 21st September. If they were females they are due to have fledged 2nd November.

Again this species like most species do not read
the relevant text books nor the lovingly published articles written about them and so are
not at all concerned that they are running late this year. How rude!!!"

Interesting ... thanks Suse.

Theoretically the boy should go first ???

I think it is the second from us ?? I am almost impatient waiting to see the first fledge)

A post from

Scott Davis 12m  Not sure if it's been posted here, since there are a *lot* of pics of the chicks lining up to fly, but what you may not know is that they may be watching their parents, who are demonstrating flying techniques right in front of them, off screen. I know someone who works in the office immediately underneath the nest - he sees the parents drop down and swoop up to the nest all day (he has also let me know of the lag between actual events and the time it takes to show on the youtube feed). He has been watching the parents swoop and flap and hang out, just in front of the building and his windows. He noted that the parents usually glide in, obviously, being the skilled flyers, but when demonstrating to their chicks flap way more dramatically, and twist and turn to show the kids how it's done.

Really interesting, thanks Suze.

All the kids looking at the camera - is today the day when one will fledge ??

Like you Suze, I wonder too.

They're all looking very fit and healthy for the long flight, they have to work up the courage to take that first step.

They look so mature now.

RnR -  According to the Video link, Looks like they have all taken off.

Still there ... at least this one ... sunbathing while being distracted by the sound of a helicopter in the background.

Such a miserable Melbourne day.

A bit of sad news

That's sad news, hope it's okay.

No further news on the injured chick and the live feed is down again.

Good news is that the last one has fledged this morning :)

The last chick fledges and mum unknowing comes up with breakfast.

Such sad news Suze ... looks like the live show is over for 2022.
