Very interesting reading -- the Dr put me on 50.000 of VitD 3 once a month, will have to read through all these posts properly when I get some more time.

Hi Plan B.

Do you take Calcium later in the day after the Vit D3?

No Ann -- my Friend was taking Calcium and she now has a build up of it and it is eating her bones and the Dr wants to operate on her parathyroid gland,  quite a puzzle really as at one time the Drs were always giving us Calcium tablets -- handing them out like lollies -- always have to ask lots of questions as to what Drs give you and never take it all for real as SOME know not a lot at all.   The Body is so finely balanced one little thing can throw it out of whack

Following an osteoporosis diagnosis I have a Prolia injection 6 monthly. The advice given at the time was to take a Calcium supplement as well.

Result: Further calcification of the arteries.

Last specialist advice: Stop taking Calcium supplement, only take VitaminD supplement.

Latest GP comment: Didn't quite agree saying, "The jury's out on that," or words to that effect.

Who would know who to believe?

RnR how many injections have you had of the Prolia?

I was taking Fosamax for almost 5 years

Eating her bones?

Reminds me of my late naughty daddy!!  Oh he was so scared stiff of needles, he was diagnosed diabetes.  Younger son of mine too.

But getting back to my very naughty daddy......he kept going to the Clinic in his 70s to monitor for Type 2. Nurse kept saying she  cannot do anything more for him, but we didn't know this fact at the time.   daddy kept plodding along to the Clinic and came back with stories.....then he started to shrink!   Started to stoop over, kept saying it is the gardening he was doing.  It got so bad he wanted to stay in bed!   It gets to the stage where an adult daughter cannot take it any longer and arguements started.  Mum goes running into him saying i had told her she was not looking after daddy.  [one of the problems with being an only child]   Daddy comes out and does his block with daughter.  so I don't visit for a few days.  Daddy gets worse and off to the hospital he goes.....Spoke to the sister in charge.....behind daddys back....

she said he has been very naughty!  Oh says me!   What has he done?

He was not taking the advice of the sister at the clinic, he should not have been on tablets but injections he has type one.... his body has been eating itself so he shrivelled up, bones and muscles the body has been using and he had gone from a guy of 15stone and was taller than me to a guy who was so bent over he could not stand up anymore and I hate to think what his weight was.

Strange thing is in all of this my younger son was diagnosed with type 2 and he was having terrible issues.  At 6'4" two Christmases ago he weight 70kgs.  Was a bean pole. changed Doctors and new tests and he was told he needed to inject himself as he has Type one.

Whats the matter with Australian doctors?

Thats not the only story I know first hand. 30 years ago a girl friend's 12 year old son was always getting ill and frail.   Nobody could put their finger on what was the matter with Timothy.   Mum and son went back to the UK as her mother was dieing.

In the hospital Timothy passed out!   UK hospital does tests and Bingo he was type one diabetic.   I ask you what is the matter with Australian doctors?

It was about the time I heard about my late father that I started to listen to my body.

PlanB ... 3 Prolia injections over the last 18 months for me.

Leaches calcium?   that is more or less what Thyroxine does too.  Makes honeycombe out of our bones. so I feel I need to watch everything regarding Calcium and my Thyroid medication.

I was told by the dentist the Calcium tablets also cause the most plague on our teeth!

I cannot win!    Image result for angry lady cartoon

Now be calm Ann..put the gun down...

You are cracking me up!

About taking supplements, I like to chat to the Naturopath at the local Chemist, they are a wealth of information.  Then I go and check out what they say.

Also the dietitian I chat to, she has me eating mushroom for their B content.

Sounds if I am always chating to these people, perhaps once or twice a year!

Oh goodness Thea, I am so sorry, I should have gone to Spec Savers!!

Not a problem Ann...I forgive you...lol

Oh Thea have you looked in the mirror?  You look as if you have been on the Silver again!

Tee hee...that will teach me to pig out...

RnR I hope the Prolia works OK for you as it can have some very nasty downsides as can Fosamax -- the reason I went off it.

Yes I agree that we are told MANY differing things about meds and also so many Drs are making a heap out of scripting them --

Some of the chemists did have that test for bone density a few yers ago -- where you put your feet in some water -- best to have the real test at the place where they scan your body,  it was a good excuse for the chemists to sell you medications,  it is always good to research yourself for the good and bad sides of any medications.

Plan B me again!!

I am told the Vit B injections are B6, but the calcium I have been made aware of is in various forms.  Some are absorbed into the system better than others.  I need to go back to the Naturopath to have another chat!

Put feet in water for a bone scan!  thats a new one on me....

I have to lay on the gismo and have a full scan.....

Years ago I had a little test in a chemist shop for osteoporosis and was told I had Osteopaenia. Have been taking calcium tabs ever since and also going to gym approx. 3 times a week for the last 7 years. A more recent test (about a year ago) showed my bones are in good nick.

However, the last time I went to buy my calcium tabs just 2 days ago the pharmacist told me that calcium + D does nothing to strengthen bones unless it also contains K2. It needs the K2 to reach the bones via the blood vessels according to her. I bought some containing the K2 but I can't help feeling cynical about advice because we are told so many different things at different times by different professionals.

Hi Robi.   That is what they say I have Osteopaenia.....did you take that medication that stops the process of it getting worse?   The specialist said he doens't think my condition needed it.  But it has been at the back of my mind the last four years.

I looked up the K2, was rather surprised at what it is made from.

From memory Vit K has a clotting effect  --

Ann what did you see it was made from ?

Plan B.

What I found is in the sites below in green just put your curser on the active sites.

When I put an address/addie into my emails I always activate the address, I don't put any of them in blind.   You only need to place the cursor on the address and click and it will take you straight to the site.

Interesting I had not heard of Vitamin K2 before but can see why it would be suggested in improving heart health and depositing Calcium to the bones as required.

The address for the full article is at the bottom of the excerpt from the article.

Vitamin K2: Everything You Need to Know

Cheese And Grapes

Calcium is an incredibly important mineral.

It is more than just building material for bones and teeth, it plays a crucial role in all kinds of biological processes (3).

The main function of Vitamin K is modifying proteins to give them the ability to bind calcium.

In this way, it “activates” the calcium-binding properties of proteins.

However… the roles of Vitamin K1 and K2 are quite different and many feel that they should be classified as separate nutrients altogether.

Vitamin K1 is mostly used by the liver to activate calcium-binding proteins involved in blood clotting, while K2 is used to activate proteins that regulate where calcium ends up in the body (4).

Bottom Line: The main function of Vitamin K is to activate the calcium-binding properties of proteins. K1 is mostly involved in blood clotting, while K2 helps regulate where calcium ends up in the body.

Vitamin K2 May Help Prevent Heart Disease

Heart and Stethoscope

Calcium build-up in the arteries around the heart is a huge risk factor for heart disease (567).

For this reason, anything that can reduce this accumulation of calcium may help prevent heart disease.

This is where vitamin K2 is believed to help, by helping to prevent calcium from being deposited in the arteries (8).

In the Rotterdam study, those who had the highest intake of Vitamin K2 were 52% less likely to develop calcification of the arteries, and had a 57% lower risk of dying from heart disease, over a 7-10 year period (9).

Vivity thats interesting what I have absorbed, I shall have to keep rereading it to get it totally absorbed into my grey matter thank you!

Ann,

No I have never taken medication for bones, only calcium + D and I go to gym. Like I said, the last test I had showed that my bones are strong.

Who do you believe?  I am puzzled....I admit to using Biotin!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biotin

About twice a month. I started to use it about 12 years ago, when I had enough of doctors saying  'I don't know the cause of IBS'  I was getting results from Blackmores Executive Stress Tablets.  Looked up the ingredients to see what was in it that was helping me.....found Biotin.

What is Biotin I said to myself 12 years ago.    Hardly anything on the net about Biotin....now there is heaps.  [use to be vit B then they changed it to vit H, now it is back to Vit B or part there of.]

[which I don't take daily anymore]

I asked the resident scientist what was it?

His reply was 'I don't know'

So we researched it.....It helps digest fatty acids.   So I went and got some! 150mg a tablet.....not a good idea.

I looked up the dosage for Biotin on the net....35mg a day.

Ok so I break it down and took it for a week!

Now up till then I could not eat my potato crisps.....which was sad for me, both husband and I love them,.

Well I don't drink and I don't smoke so I must be able to have something that is not good for me.    After a week I went and purchased two medium sized pkts of potato crisps and sat down and ate one whole yummy packet.   Oh yummy!

Waited for several hours, days even.  Nothing happened.

So the Biotin was helping me digest the greasy Potato crisps. Alas I over did it and started to put on weight. Silly me.

So I had to cut back on potato chips to lose weight.  I cannot win, and it is nearly a year since I ate potato chips.....Image result for eating potato chips cartoon Earlier in my life I was misdiagnosed with a heart valve problem and for years had lots of anti biotics!

Biotin in the body is destroyed by, guess?

Also the raw white of an egg.

Well I have not eaten many Pavlovas  [soft variety]

But I have had a lot of anti biotics.....

'Mind-blowing' study of people born with one hand reveals scientists have misunderstood how the brain works for centuries

A study led by researchers at University College London suggests that areas of the brain are organised by functions rather than individual body parts.

A couple of years ago I developed a pain in one knee..doctor said it could be the beginning of arthritis..so he suggested I use Glucosamine..

The pain got worse..so I abandoned it after using for six months  and the pain disappeared..it turned out there was no arthritis..just  a ligament that needed some rest..

I am of the opinion some doctors need a rest too...

Yes Thea.  I have been diagnosed by professionals twice with the wrong diagnosed issue......ggrr..

Has taken a lot out of my life those two issues.

Then Hubby had those 6 operations in 11 months, nothing was given in way of suggestions or advice that he needed to replenish his vit B.

It was only when I spoke to the Prof who was treating me did I pour my heart out. He must have contacted the GP we see and give him an ear full.

Next thing I know hubby is being injected with B over a six week period. Gosh what a difference on my nervers that made.  Arguements stopped.

He was also given an injection for  Pneumonia apparently on trial for the over 72 and it is free.  Don't think it should have been given with the Vit B injections because for several days after that he became abnoxious!!!!!!

The Drs were all onto the Glucosamine a few years ago -- they don't seem as keen on it these days

Ann did you Husband have Pernicious Anaemia?  to have to be injected with Vit B for all that time?    My Mother had that and from the age of 16 I used to give her Vit B injections every week then every month

Hi Plan B.

I really don't know I have not seen the records of his tests they were sent to the GP.

But the B injections were  prior to his two collapses.  We need to speak to the GP to see what he thinks.  But husband did have 6 operations, 4 were major in a period of 11months.   Lot to do with nerves of the spine and the bones.

Ann I always get copies of all the reports and keep them

I was given Ciprofloxacin in 2013 for a chest infection and I am STILL having trouble with the side effects of it -- it was used in the gulf war -- for Anthrax -- also used as a FAILED chemo drug -- and now they are talking of using it as a weed killer -- the amount of people that have had their lives ruined because of Cipro AND the other Fluoroquinolone drugs  is a real disaster,  some Drs will admit it is pretty severe but other just denigh and will not admit.

I am STILL having gut problems and some tendon problems to this day and there are a LOT that are a darn sight worse than I am.

Plan B do you take Probiotics daily?

Usually after having a course of antibiotics the doctors do suggest we take the Probiotics.  Not in Yogurt, the capsule.

Ann I did for 3 years -  never helped much at all -- the effects from the Cipro were too bad -- and it has left me with gut problems I will have forever

Plan B I would keep taking the Probiotic, or change to another brand that keeps in the fridge.  Go off all fermented foods.  Eat little and often.  My late father had a similar problem he had part of his stomach removed.

I like to eat little and often, it is much gentler on the tummy!

I keep well away from all dairy too.   I use Organic Rice Milk and http://nuttelex.com/#slide-8  [Lite] instead of butter.  Butter and cheese makes me violently sick as does vinegar and wine.

I use both the Rice Milk and Nuttelex to make my cakes with and nobody can tell the difference.   That is what is so amusing....

I usually bake either chocolate cakes or vanilla cakes.

I am not taking any Pro-Biotics now I used the ones that I used to have to keep in the fridge -- I do take Vit C / Zinc / and the Vit D3 once a month and I am better than I was in the gut and do not vomit all the time but the bowel will never be right that is what the Gastro bloke told me but I can cope with it at the moment.

I keep having my emails go away on me each time I write one out about the K2 .... I've tried three times now. I give up....

What email server are you using Ann

everything is working now thanks Plan B.....just last night for some reason on the one topic nothing was uploading.

Good to hear Ann --- so frustrating as we become so dependent on these computers now

I posted the other day the name of the Calcium I take, I have the container next to me here and I am going to list the ingredients.

CABOT HEALTH

CALCIUM COMPLETE  [super strength]

each tablet contains the following....

Calcium citrate hydrate                              1.05g

Hydtoxyapatite                               240mg

Magnesium oxide [heavy]              227mg

Manganese amino acid chelate        10mg

Zinc gluconate                                    6.7mg

  [providing elemental zinc 875 mcg]

Menaquinone  7  [Vit K2]                   8.25mcg

Cholecalciferol    [Vit D3]                  12.5 mcg

Copper gluconate                                 3.5 mg

Boron [as Borax]                                750mcg

I also take two 1000mg of Vit D3 separate to the above tablet daily.

I was told recently when blood test for operation had a low blood count. Knew that as I too had pernicious anemia and told it meant low for life. Looked it up and read B12 deficiency caused by this.

I had already started taking Thompsons B12 supplement years ago when read that over 50's need it as body stops making enough etc.

Anyway, I asked my GP for another blood test for B12 and found that my B12 count was higher than required for health at 925. He said bit high but no worries but could take it down to 3 a week if I liked.

I think once we all get to 50+ we need to take these supplements and docs no longer say dont and one reason is the soils of the world are they say exhausted and not giving us enough vits even if we do eat our quota.

D 3 is down all over the world as we got told to avoid sun for skin cancer. And Docs say now take it.

Also should look at CO Q 10 and take garlic pills daily.

I still havent had that operation booked last November due to them missing fact I had cellulitis on right leg even though showed it to surgeon and his side kick who said blood count too low to operate.

GP later I saw as old one on hols, said it as inside the data an 8 on scale of 7-15 and he would operate. Took this GP the new one, to tell me right leg swelling should have stopped op if they had only noticed! Not blood as they do a spinal anyway.

I had had this swelling for a few weeks prior and seen 2 other GPs at the clinic over it neither of whom diagnosed it as cellulitis.

So am with you all there on GP's and even specialists today.

Val with pernicious Anaemia you can not process Vit in the gut and so are to have injections of  Cytamen  every week or Month depending on the reading I gave them to my Mother for 30 years

We all most probably knew this, but I thought it was worth posting......

What it REALLY means when a fly lands on your food (and why you should stop eating and throw it away immediately)

<img src="http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2017/04/24/09/3F8D5D1000000578-0-image-a-6_1493022380252.jpg" height="115" width="154" alt="" />

Flies carry about 200 forms of harmful bacteria on their arms and legs, an expert has revealed. They then transfer those germs onto your food even if they only land on it for a second.

Was unable to open that sight Ann but I could never eat anything if a fly had landed on it -- they vomit on things to digest them

What it REALLY means when a fly lands on your food (and why you should stop eating and throw it away immediately)

Morning Plan B.  This is another copy of the site.       I was interested in the topic as I am finding more and more bakers around our area with flies in the cabinets.

Thanks Ann, yes I remember my Mother telling me that when I was just a Kid -- I am so particular about flies

Interesting, would like to know more.

More evidence Parkinson's starts in the gut: Removing a section of digestive tract nerve lowers your risk by 40%, study claims

<img src="http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2017/04/26/23/3FA3EA3100000578-0-image-m-27_1493246420756.jpg" height="115" width="154" alt="" />

More evidence has emerged that Parkinson's disease may start in the gut. Patients who had part of a digestive tract nerve removed had a lesser risk of developing the disease than those who didn't.

I am hearing about SO many people coming down with this these days I have heard it is caused by Toxins -- maybe spraying on farms -- fruit etc,  that interferes with the Dopamine in the brain.

Yes I think so Plan B.

What with spraying for weeds, insects they also give the crops chemicals to help them ripen quicker.

I like to try to purchase organic when we can afford it.  The price of organic is three or four times more than the ordinary fruit and vegs.

I've notice the spuds are often green too, they put them in plastic that isn't clear anymore so you cannot see what we are purchasing.

The research has been done, but how many of us know there is a vaccine for this terrible problem mainly young children are getting?

Meningococcal W: Parents plead for action on deadly disease that struck their toddler son 2/11

The parents of a Tasmanian toddler who recently contracted the deadly meningococcal W disease are sickened their son could have been immunised but they did not realise a vaccination existed.

Carly and Nathan Long from Launceston in northern Tasmania are sharing their story in the hope of raising awareness about meningococcal and the increasing W strain.

Their two-year-old son Arthur contracted the disease on February 26 this year, waking that Saturday morning with cold and flu-like symptoms.

"He was just a bit clingy and grizzly, as a normal toddler would be if they were getting a bit of a flu," Mrs Long said.

The Longs arranged for a GP to visit their house and were advised the toddler was getting a virus.

But Arthur continued to deteriorate and later in the evening the parents called Launceston General Hospital seeking further advice.

"I gave them his symptoms, which were, 'Look, he's quite lethargic and limp'.

"They kept asking if his lips were blue or if he had a rash.

"He didn't really — if anything his lips were pale but they said, 'Yes, you need to go to the hospital straight away'."

It was not until Arthur arrived at the hospital that the tell-tale rash appeared.

The bacterial infection 'meningococcal W' was spreading throughout his body, causing his vital organs to shut down.

Staff began arranging a transfer to the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

"Doctor Chris, I think it was, who was transporting him to Melbourne said he couldn't guarantee that he's going to be able to get him to Melbourne alive," Mr Long said.

"I don't know how to explain it — we didn't think we were going to have Arthur."

<p>Arthur Long's parents were gutted to learn a vaccine for meningococcal W was available.</p>© Provided by ABC Health

Arthur Long's parents were gutted to learn a vaccine for meningococcal W was available.

Arthur on life support for ten days

In Melbourne, surgeons operated immediately to relieve pressure on the boy's legs.

Arthur Long was on life support for 10 days and in intensive care for two weeks.

He will be left with permanent disabilities — in a few weeks, the two-year-old's feet will be amputated and his hands are also damaged.

While relieved Arthur was saved, the Longs were gutted to learn a vaccine could have prevented their family's ordeal.

"To find out Arthur had meningococcal we were kind of in disbelief really, and then to find out later after we came here that he could have been immunised against it, was sickening really." Mr Long said.

The Longs believe immunisation against the W strain should be on the national immunisation schedule and, at the very least, be better advertised.

"I'd love to see it added to the national program — I'd hate to see this happen to anyone else," Mrs Long said.

"At minimum, every time you take your child to get vaccinated you should be told these vaccinations are available."

'We would have got the vaccine in a heartbeat'

There are five main strains of meningococcal disease: A, B, C, W and Y.

Arthur Long was immunised against meningococcal C at 12 months, a free vaccine to all children as part of the National Immunisation Program.

Tasmania's Acting Director of Public Health Dr Mark Veitch said there were vaccines available against the increasing meningococcal W, as well as A, B and Y, but they are not subsidised.

"Families can choose to go and purchase vaccines through their general practitioner, it's not always possible to get the vaccine as there is a bit of a squeeze on vaccine supply," he said.

They cost around $100.

Mrs Long said she was under the misconception Arthur was immunised against everything.

"I had no idea that there were additional vaccines against this type of meningococcal that aren't on the national schedule that you can pay for and had we ever been offered that we would have got them in a heartbeat," she said.

'W strain is now the most common'

There have been five cases of meningococcal in Tasmania this year, 44 over the past 10 years.

Dr Veitch said most of the recent cases have been the W strain.

"Meningococcal W used to be fairly uncommon in Australia but it's actually the most common strain that's currently circulating, circulating across Australia and in Tasmania," he said.

It has a higher death rate than the other strains — around 10 per cent.

Of the 262 cases of meningococcal disease in Australia, last year 48 to 50 per cent were cases of the W strain.

Dr Veitch said the National Immunisation Program was a complex set of arrangements.

"It's based very much on the evidence that a vaccine is needed to prevent infection in particular age groups, and it also takes into account the cost-effectiveness of investing in a vaccine," he said.

Dr Veitch said there was a number of working groups currently looking to determine the best strategy.

But Carly and Nathan Long are just grateful their son survived.

"He's doing great, he really is and in terms of what could have and very nearly did happen to Arthur, we're very lucky," Mrs Long said.

My Stepson died with this at the age of 44 -- left a wife and 4 Kids -- he was dead in 5 days

Plan B.

That is so horrific and sad, I am sorry to hear that.

How long ago and which strain was it?

How tragic PB, I hear there's a free pneumonia shot now, as well as the flu and shingle shots for us over 70.  I keep telling my doctor I don't want them.

It was B,  I believe, and it was 19 years ago
