Scientific testing has found that half of the honey sold by Australian supermarkets is adulterated, it has been claimed.

The “fake” honey is a blend of local and imported honeys, which is considered cheating, according to a joint ABC 7.30 Report-Fairfax investigation.

“ASX-listed Capilano's Allowrie-branded Mixed Blossom Honey, which sources honey from Australia and overseas, and markets itself as 100 per cent honey, showed up as ‘adulterated’ in the majority of samples tested,” according to the media probe.

In its defence the honey producer denied its products contained impurities, and questioned the accuracy of the testing – known as nuclear magnetic resolution.

“There is no suggestion that Capilano's eponymous brand of Australian-sourced honey has any issue or that Capilano or other brands were aware of the adulteration.”

However, International Federation of Beekeepers' Association president Phil McCabe believes the test is the most accurate available and thinks consumers are not getting what they paid for.

“By and large [the impurity] is some kind of syrup that's been converted to look like honey, it tastes like honey,” Mr McCabe told the investigation.

“Everything about it seems to be honey, when in fact it's just sugar syrup or something else.”

He said he would refer the tests, commissioned by top law firm King & Wood Mallesons, to Interpol for further investigation.

Germany's Quality Services International lab was commissioned by the law firm on behalf of horticulturalist Robert Costa to conduct two types of tests of the sampled honey.

Supermarket chain, ALDI, has already moved to pull any affected product from its shelves as a precaution.
