Gout

Gout is a common form of arthritis.
A gout attack is sudden and painful. Gout is caused by a build-up of a waste product, uric acid, in the bloodstream. Excess uric acid settles in joints causing inflammation, pain and swelling.

In March this year I had a bad attack of gout in a toe.
After a while uric acid came out of the toe and formed crystals on the surface of the toe.
My doctor gave me some medication to relieve the gout but it had such side affects that I could not continue with it.
I have not been able to wear shoes since March as anything touching the toe is very painful.
Also I have been on anti-biotics as it got infected and has now formed an ulcer.
I have been prescribed pain killers such as Endone and Codalgin Forte (Paracetamol/Codeine) but I am reluctant to take too many of these as they have caused constipation and are addictive.

I am on pills to lower the uric acid level in my blood and these have worked as the level is now normal also I have been visiting a dietitian (even though my weight is normal for my height) to get a diet free of purines which can affect the uric acid level.

I have also had surgery on the toe to remove the crystals which I might add was damn painful.
I have been told by a podiatrist that it may be months before my toe returns to normal.

I am writing this to see if any other members suffer from gout or in this case chronic gout.
I would be interested to hear how you coped.

You may or may not have heard about the MSM and gout connection, but MSM is being used for many conditions. Many of them are conditions that affect the joints much like gout does. MSM stands for Methyl Sulfonyl Methane - a natural sulfur compound. Though this is much like traditional sulfur, you will be glad to know that the smell normally associated with sulfur is not present when you use this is a natural remedy for gout. There are on-going studies on this treatment, but it is safe to try for the most part and usually inexpensive.

What MSM and gout have in common are your joints and connective tissues. This substance is works to aid the body in building or repairing many essential proteins and some collagen that keeps skin and tissues supple and joints moving. It helps with the overall health of your joints, tendons and other similar tissues in the body.

At the same time, it can help with more than gout. MSM can aid in vitamin absorption, and you may find additional benefits are strong and healthy nails and hair. You may even find that taking it as recommended will help give your immune system a small boost. MSM also helps to reduce inflammation and pain and aids the liver in processing toxins.

MSM is often found in some of the foods that we eat, though in rather small doses. It comes in food items like milk, which probably has the highest amounts of MSN of all food sources. It is also in some meats and fish, and many fresh fruits and vegetables. Some of this is lost when the foods are cooked, so meats might fall off the list as a possible source of MSM, especially if you're currently avoiding high purine foods. Thankfully, MSM is also available as a supplement in powered form, which you can add to drinks, or in capsule form that you can take like a pill. Alternatively, there are creams you can purchase that contain MSM, which can be applied to the effected joints.

When thinking of MSM and gout relief, you have to think in the long term. It is generally recommended to start out small with dosages that gradually increase. As with most natural supplements it can take a few weeks or months for levels to build up in the system properly to have the right effect. As far as supplements go, this might be one of the safest, but that does not mean you should take more than recommended. You should always talk with your doctor about what you are going to try so that they can give you some pointers, and even help you monitor the progress you may or may not be making.

Fwed "MSM A Natural Choice" is the purest and Australian and Cheapest

way to buy the MSM we have found and recently bought 10 kilos and we take a teaspoon in

juice or cordial morning and night - worth bringing it up on the net and making your

own decisions on it. Best to injest and topically :)

Maybe a help to you :)

You can mix the powder which dissolves very quickly in hottish water and put it straight on

a painful area or add a bit to Sorboline cream and it is heaps cheaper and much

more efective to many of the very expensive rubs.

Off to Moe to shop today.

All the best

Phyl.

I have a friend that gets Gout from time to time but it is controlled by some tablets Dr gave her--I believe it is VERY painful

Fwed, you have my unreserved sympathy. I have suffered with gout from my teens and throughout my adult life. It is terribly painful and can erupt in a matter of hours. I found over the years that there are MANY anti-inflammatory drugs with varying side effects - these side effects can vary from person to person so you need to talk with your GP, experiment and find what is best for you. After trying and discarding several drug combinations, I now use Allopurinol (to reduce uric acid) in conjunction with Progout (Voltaren) when necessary to reduce inflammation. This has worked well for me and I have not had a chronic attack for some years now.

I would suggest you try Voltaren emulgel - it is an "ointment" that you apply to the site of the pain and I have found it quite effective (and quick) in providing temporary relief ..... at least you can get some sleep.

Good luck with finding a solution......it probably wont be easy.

My friend also finds that she got when had eaten a lot of citrus or tomatoes--

Not one word re thanks folks for caring about me from Fwed?

:wow: :wow: :wow: :wow:

Having some experience with fweds condition, I have no doubt that he is busy screaming, crying and putting fingernail scratches all over his gyprock walls....

For goodness sake he better offer it up for penance for his sins kfc.

.

Phyl, I thank you and all the others who replied.

I do appreciate your comments Phyl but at this time I am strictly following doctors and dietitian's advice and also being helped by a podiatrist who is fantastic even though she causes me a great deal of pain scraping the tophi (crystals) from my toe.

I spend about 3 days a week visiting these people and most of all I just want to be able to put on a pair of shoes without being in pain as I have not been able to wear shoes for nearly 9 months.

kfc I have tried some of the things you mention such as voltarin and others which do help but cannot be taken for long periods.

As I said I am following professional advice and hope that within a few months I will be back to normal (whatever that is)

I must admit that what I thought was the strangest advice was that I should drink more coffee.

And I only have 2 timtams left :(

hellow fwed. your condition sounds very uncomfortable - especially the pain and the inconvenience of not being able to wear shoes.

an ancient remedy for gout (or any bone/joint condition) is comfrey, in the form of a poultice. comfrey is growing well at the moment, as it likes the warm weather. my garden is full of it - also a very good soil conditioner and the leaves are valuable in compost.

i'm fortunate in that i don't suffer from gout, so have not tried this remedy. if you're interested, there are more details here http://www.ehow.com/how_6046245_treat-arthritis-comfrey-poultice.html

good luck.

You poor thing Fwed. BUT - here comes the Pollyanna bit.

People know what to buy you for Christmas hey? nice smelling things

and tools to keep your feet looking and smelling nice because

everyone sees fwed's feet as you cannot wear shoes right now yes?

There is ALWAYS something to be glad about.

Ouch I always say please no hard boiled eggs.

.

AND pain sure makes a person appreciate the good times when no pain.

Peter had a heel spur for yonks and had cortisone injections into

it and also VERY painful but now it has gone he is happy

.

If only we could sleep o.k. with him NOT stopping breathing over and over.:(

Life is still good though :) and what a great day today is going to be

Every Wednesday is great though (if we can get a place to park

our car it being Christmas)

Yesterday I made the famous fruit cake again Just

1 kilo of fruit... 600 ml choc. milk...2 cups self raising flour.

Looks and tastes like a dark beautiful moist wedding cake.

.

Ave a great special day today

Fwed, sorry to hear about your painful affliction, if you are up to it,

I can arrange a pick up and take you on a gentle cruise around my

large pool. The lapping of water may ease the pain.

You can have as many Tim Tams as you wish, I hope they do not

create more acid from the sugar though.

Phyl, I have looked up MSM at http://www.diagnose-me.com/treat/T31893.html and it looks worth while after this problem is fixed as I don't want to mix too many things at the moment outside of what doctors recommend.

kika, I also checked the site you posted and could be worthwhile if there was no open wound because at the moment I have to keep the wound dry.

seth, It would be nice to float on your frog pond, who knows , we might even find a Tadpole.

At the doctors today I was informed that I have a rare infection of the toe. I was prescribed a new antibiotic which is used for victims of biological warfare (anthrax) . This medication can have bad side affects such as tearing of a tendon, especially in the Achilles' tendon.

If this does not work I will have to go into hospital so as to get the antibiotics intravenously.

Ah but it will get better.

fwed, sorry to read that you may have to be admitted to hospital,

It may turn out to be a blessing though,

'Keep it a secret between the two of us, don't tell anyone'

or there could be trouble.

Tadpole arrives in Vic, Feb.10th. I'm leaving on a cruise for

5 weeks, I f you have to go into hospital see if you can stay 5 weeks.

I've had enough of being walked over let alone someone wearing

lawn spike shoes.

Hope all goes well for you and the antibiotic is successful.

Whatever you do, fwed...... dont accept any dancing invitations. I am sure these ladies would exploit your incapacity and jump on your toe.
