World Youth Day - and the joke is on us

To yet again lambaste our politicians at both state and federal level, I am aghast at their determination to attract world attention by staging these high profile political, social and sporting events. The Olympics, the Heads of Govt meeting last year, International motor racing events, World Youth Day etc., etc. They insist on "showcasing our wonderful country" yet with EVERY event, the local population is inconvenienced and ground underfoot by the increasingly draconian "special event" legislation and the heavy-handed and often brutal police repression of legitimate, peaceful demonstration. I just cant understand how they can justify the blatant abuse of our freedom of speech and expression and our basic right to public assembly.....and to enforce their will by allowing "thuggery" by our police. Often, even innocent bystanders are brutalised by police simply for not jumping fast enough when an order is barked in their direction. There was a time when I had some grudging respect for the NSW police force, but these days, they are largely just revenue raisers for the states "secondary taxation system". I understand that a $5000 fine applies for causing offense to a pilgrim during WYD celebrations.......how long before we get ten lashes for breaking wind?

Well IF they choose to practice celibacy they should DO so and NOT be Hypocrites--in my opinion celibacy is a most unnatural thing for most people--and it does state in the Bible that IF you can then do but if you can't then marry.

Celibacy = pedophilia?(sp)

There are many married men , and women, out in the world who are pedophiles.

The pedophiles who have joined organizations which give them access to young people, would be pedophiles anyway.

They are everywhere, not just in religious orgs.

Pedophelia is an evil crime, and

pedophiles are evil people... deviants to the norm. They are not just sexually frustrated people.

There are lots of people who for one reason or another do not enjoy the intimate benefits of a happy fulfilled partnership....widows, widowers, those who choose a single life, and many other examples.

The absence of such a relationship for whatever reason ,does not immediately assume pedophilia.

I believe many powers have been bestowed upon Popes, or they bestowed it onto themselves.

There is danger in this because the followers are to obey. We know this from other 'gurus'

who ended up having followers and things turned out tragic. Pope only has to give word, and the hordes of followers will do as told especially more so from third world countries who actually 'believe' every word said by him.

I believe that is why China is battling with Fallun Gong; They are not meditating to find the inner center and commune with God, they are meditating on their leader. If their leader were to say jump, they jump.

And if they were to jump, it could cause quite a problem for law and order.

We saw violent protests by 'free Tibet' groups; surprise, surprise, they were not threatened with $5000 fine;

perhaps there are more Catholics in the corridors of our Parlament than we realise?

Religion and politics are to be kept seperate. I hope so.

Mara, you have touched on one of my pet hates with our government. I dont believe that it is fair to have different laws at different times for the same infringement. Your observation re the "Free Tibet" demonstrations is a good example, but even closer to home is the "double demerit" system for long weekends and holidays. I think it stinks and ruins these times for me......I am always nervous that a simple lapse in concentration could cost me my drivers license......so I tend not to drive at such times unless really necessary. As previously noted, I also believe that the "Special Event" legislation is unfair, unconstitutional and breaches our civil liberties. It encourages the thugs in our Police force to act with impunity.

---Yes you are so very right--that is what frightens me that so many can be fooled by so few--AND without question!
