Windows 10

Windows 10 Users Will Automatically Get the New Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft’s new version of the Edge web browser, which is based on Chromium like Google Chrome, will soon be automatically downloaded to users’ computers.

The old version of Edge shipped by default with Windows 10 wasn’t very good or very fast or very popular. Most people continued to use Chrome or other browsers. Microsoft, using the “if you can’t beat them, join them” philosophy, rebuilt Edge using the same Chromium engine as Chrome uses. The new Edge is faster, easier to use, plus it allows its users to access thousands of Chrome extensions.

The new Edge bears little resemblance to the old Edge. Previously, the only way you could get the new Edge was by manually downloading it. But now, Microsoft will be including it in several automatic updates for Windows 10.

If you haven’t downloaded the new Edge yet, it’s likely that you will soon find the new Edge installed on your computer.

Already downloaded - the logo on my tool bar etc. changed when I did, so easy to see if you have the new version.

Just go to ... Help & Feedback, About Microsoft Edge.  Latest version (11/6/20) is Version 83.0.478.45 (Official build) (64-bit)

Silly question does that include I pads & tablets or just laptops & pc 's

Yep, there's Edge for Android as well (Tablets & Phones), don't know about Apple.

Yes, Apple as well. I have it on my iPad.

Been using it as my primary browser for a couple of months now, got fed up with Google Chrome's antics and Vivaldi developed an unusual habit of responding to any search queries in HEBREW !  Now that Edge will use Chrome Extensions, it's much more useable.  For anyone using the new Edge and cannot figure out how to make the New Tab page default to, say, the Google Search page, you need to use the "New Tab Redirect" extension from the Chrome Store. (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions)  Another REALLY useful Chrome Extension is "Social Fixer for Facebook", this allows you to filter out nearly all of the garbage that appears on your facebook home page.  And, of course, there are chrome extensions for all manner of Ad Blocking functionality.

Hi Fearlessfly.  Chrome store has 3 New Tab Redirect extensions.  Which is the preferred option?

Hi, it's the one that says "Offered by: Jim Schubert"

Windows 10 is the most expensive and damaging virus there is.

Since upgrading one of my computers to windows 10 a couple of years ago it has caused all sorts of issues.

It has disabled perfectly good software then holds me to ransome to have to pay for extra upgrades for the software so it will be compatible with this rubbish.

It has the virus of doing upgrades without being asked and having a choice. When it want s to do an upgrade it wont shut down until the upgrade is done, shut the power off and it is the firtst thing it does when you boot up.

On one occasion it disabled my sound system, and messed up my settings on some programmes, then we had to go and do setups again.

I know we could have reversed the changeover back to windows 8 but it was too lote y the time we tried to sort it.

What a rip off, I have since bought an new laptop with no choice about win 10 and still have problems after each unwanted unstopable upgrade.

Theft by stealth.

Mmmm, intriguing, I know where you are coming from, when I had a desktop PC (> 1 yr ago) I had the most awful time with Windows 10 on it, endless blue screens, endless rebuilds and reinstalls, I even flagged it away and installed Ubuntu Linux on it in the end. However, since we both got new laptops - Metabox and Lenovo, I've not had any issue at all with either machine, they're both Win10 Pro and every Win10 update has gone through flawlessly over the past 18 months.

A friend has had a new computer for a month or so now and brought it around yesterday to do some business on it and it was a nightmare -- and it wanted her to download Microsoft edge -- and even though she had an outlook email account it insisted on using Microsoft and asked for her c/c detail -- which she never gave -- is this how windows 10 is -- we always used Firefox is it still possible with 10?

I am still with 7 and was about to buy 10 but if this is the way it is I will not be getting it

The computer bloke told me that Chrome (which Microsoft Edge -- is -- )  is even more like big brother than anything else

Can you get rid of this Edge and use what you wish????

Edge now comes with Windows 10 as standard. Edge is now built on the Chromium browser engine and has now surpassed Chrome as a better browser. Edge now allows Chrome Extensions to be installed. You can use whatever browser you like, in Win10 you just change the default browser in the "Default Programs" settings. On my Windows 10 Pro laptop I currently use Edge as the browser of choice, Chrome for some other purposes and Firefox for reading online newspapers and accessing some other websites as I have Firefox set up to reject cookies, defeat paywalls, stop scripts running and other anti garbage measures. I also occasionally use the Vivaldi browser (also built on the Chromium engine).

I'm on MacOS and use a variety of browsers for different purposes too.

As you say Fearlessfly, change the default browser if you want to, Windows or Mac.

Thanks fearlessly

I find with Chrome I seem to get too many tracking cookies and advertizing
