For our First Head of State I would like to see either of these two people!

to represent the people of Australia, not a political appointment, rather like the Irish Presidents.

No one with a political exasperation that is for sure. How about Skippy or Red Dog.? Really, I think one of our 2 mining magnates would be a good choice.

Mining magnates will want to run the country and two of them are already heavily involved with politics.

I am wary of a popularly elected Head of State unless their powers are seriously limited because if they are not Constitutional issues could arise down the track. People say they are happy with what we have but the Gov.Gen. is appointed by the P.M. of the day and while most have performed well there have been some failures down the years.

It is time we were a republic and be totally independent of the U.K. and I say that as a dual citizen. The monarchy has, by and large, served Britain well and held it together but these days the pressure for Independence is growing across all four countries of the U.K. When they split who knows what they will end up with as a Head of State. We should show the World that we are an independent country and take total control of our own destiny.

Former Chiefs of the Australian Defence Force are good candiates for the Head of State role since the HoS is usually also the Supreme Commander of the armed forces anyway plus they have usually tended to be apolitical in their former military careers. Also they are not beholden to any corporate or private business interests or union, church or ideological affiliations. Retired senior judges would also be good candidates for the similar reasons. I have my doubts about choosing celebrities of any art, sport or endevour. What experince do they have with affairs of state or the management of complex organizations?

The main  issue with a republican HoS, of course, is how they are selected. John Howard's attempt to determine this was tainted by the false choice he gave Australians: "Do you want a Republic with the HoS chosen by [the Government/Prime Minister/me] or not?" Naturally, Australians said "No!" He should have asked: "Do you want Australia to become a republic?" - to which the answer probably would have been, then and now, "Yes". If "yes", he should then have then asked:  "How to you want to choose the HoS?" But then. we're talking about a politician here. Why would you expect such an individual to behave in anything other than a devious manner?
