The dam-maker: China involved in 289 dam projects worldwideby on 6 November 2011

China is currently involved in 289 hydroelectric projects worldwide, as reported by International Rivers. Most of the dams are planned for hydropower, and over half are considered ‘large’ projects. The list includes completed dams, one currently under construction, and ones in early planning stages.

While dams are often considered ‘green’ power, those in the tropics emit significant greenhouse gases from vegetation rotting in hydroelectric reservoirs. In fact, a recent study found that a dam in Lao PDR still produced greenhouse gas emissions a decade after it was constructed. However, such energy projects still emit considerably less than China’s current power of choice: coal.

By changing river flows, hydroelectric projects also impact fish populations and threaten local livelihoods. In some cases people are forced to move to make way for the river’s new flow or the reservoir.

Not all of China’s dam projects are foregone conclusions. Last month, a massive Chinese-sponsored dam in Myanmar was tabled by the government after local protests. The Myitsone Dam would have been built on the head of the Irrawaddy River with 90 percent of the energy being diverted China. Currently, China is planning 7 dams on the Irrawaddy.

Nearly half of China’s hydroelectric projects are in Southeast Asia with 30 percent in Africa, a continent where China’s influence is rising.

From your link Celia ...

By applying the Greek mathematician’s principle, a lift at China’s Three Gorges Dam moves ships with more speed and uses less power. It's an elevator for 3,000-ton ships using concrete counterweights.

And, three gorges dam ship lift video ...

I missed the '0' on the tonnage!  Was in a hurry.....

I remember a documentary on a British boat lift like this a few months ago.

China is certainly spending some money around the traps.

I wonder ....

4 Corners story this week about North Korea, China uses Koreans in their factories, outsources work to North Korean factories and imports and exports with North Korea, some clothes may not be made in China but North Korea!

Dateline on SBS was interesting and sad to hear about how the Chinese elderly are not being looked after especially in the rural areas.

Oh did they repeat that old programme we watched that awhile back, I brought it up here on another Thread, don't think it went down too well!  LOL   It was very sad to see the elderly struggling like that.

I did not know it had been on before and don't remember seeing it on another thread. Yes it is shocking how they treat their elderly in China, and yes very sad for the lady who had dementia and was living on her own.

There was another case in China with 100,000 displaced people that lost their homes too; it was about their new Dams they were building a huge project.

Taking Australia back: PM announces tough new measures to stop foreigners buying our land and assets - and China will be FURIOUS

PM announces tough new measures to stop foreigners buying our land and assets

A zero-dollar approval threshold will mean all foreign bids for Australian companies from large telecommunications companies to small defence providers will be vetted by the government. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg will also have the power to force a sale or impose conditions on foreign acquisition of Australian assets even after a purchase is made. It follows a series of recent controversial takeovers by Chinese-owned companies - including the lease of the Port of Darwin to Chinese Communist Party-linked Landbridge Group in November 2015. It comes as Australian relations with China, it's largest trading power, continues to sour

In a statement, the Foreign Investment Review Board chair David Irvine said the changes would make the system "stronger and more sustainable".

"The package appropriately addresses increasing risks to the national interest whilst ensuring Australia remains welcoming and open to foreign investment," he said.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said the changes were important, given Australia was "seeing more foreign interference than we've ever seen before".

"We need to deal with the modern reality … to make sure that our national interest is preserved and that our national security and people's privacy is not exploited."

When asked if the changes were aimed at Chinese investments, Mr Dutton said the new rules would be "country agnostic".

Australia': China tells citizens not to go Down Under because of 'increasing racial discrimination and violence' towards Asians in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic

China urges travellers to avoid Australia over claims of racism in COVID-19 world

China has urged its travellers not to visit Australia over claims of widespread racism in the wake of the coronavirus. The Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in a statement on Friday that 'Asian people' were being targeted with racial discrimination and violence.  'Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, racial discrimination and violence against Chinese and Asian people in Australia have seen a significant increase,' the statement said.

Big blow for future education and tourism revival.

I haven't seen any personally. I don't think they will worry too much, they would do anything to get out of China for a bit. Anyway no point talking about it now with borders still closed, so he is speaking too soon.

The times I have seen it has been on the media when people take the video with the phones on buses and trains.

There was another case about three weeks ago about a woman [they said well dressed] was having a go at some Chinese tourists, it was really embarrasing. The media brought it up a few times. Pity as it is so negative.

What do you think? Should the media not report things like that? Or is it a case of private people film it and then put it up on these Facebook sites so the newspapers pick the story up.

Now look at the damage those people have created.

I think we should be made more aware but then do we want the perpretrators to get more acknowledgement? they seem to get a kick out of it to show their mates.

Cambridge-educated British journalist and China's star TV presenter James Chau (pictured with Meghan Markle) was left to solemnly introduce the shocking footage to viewers

Cambridge-educated British journalist and China's star TV presenter James Chau (pictured with Meghan Markle) was left to solemnly introduce the shocking footage to viewers

Ashen-faced, manacled and locked inside a steel cage, British fraud investigator Peter Humphrey confesses to his 'crimes'.

From a forbidding Shanghai jail, dressed in an orange prison tunic and, he says, drugged with sedatives, he grovels to the dozen television cameras trained on him.

'We obtained personal information by illegal means,' he mumbles, his voice wavering. 'I regret what I did and I apologise to the Chinese government.'

The humiliating 2013 footage was broadcast across Chinese media as well as – astonishingly – in Britain.

The apparent confession was a victory for the Communist regime in Beijing in its drive to stamp out corruption.

A Westerner accused of stealing private information and then confessing to his crimes in front of the TV cameras was a major coup for Xi Jinping's nascent presidency and His ruthless purge of the country.

For such a significant news event, it was left to China's star TV presenter James Chau to solemnly introduce the shocking footage to viewers.

A Cambridge-educated British journalist, his clipped English accent gave the propaganda broadcast an air of legitimacy.

Mr Chau is a star in China and counts Meghan Markle among his close friends. They have been pictured arm-in-arm at high-profile charity events such as the

One Young World Summit in 2016, where the pair were billed as 'counsellors' offering advice to young people.

Meghan has lavished praise on him in lengthy social media posts, describing him as a 'savvy and charming gent'.

And Mr Chau was lionised internationally too, appointed a so-called 'goodwill ambassador' for the World Health Organisation.

Introducing the 'confession' footage, Mr Chau trumpeted: 'The illegal acquisition and then the use of data is one of the fastest growing crimes in this country.

But police in Shanghai have knocked a chink into that. They announced the owners of a foreign private investigation firm have been arrested on charges of illegally

Selling personal data belonging to Chinese nationals.

Li Keqiang Meets with King Tupou VI of Tonga  2018/03/01

On the afternoon of March 1, 2018, Premier Li Keqiang met at the Great Hall of the People with King Tupou VI of Tonga, who was in China for a state visit.

Li Keqiang expressed that Tonga is a good friend and partner of China in the region of the Pacific Island countries. President Xi Jinping and Your Majesty held fruitful talks, vigorously promoting the development of bilateral relations. China appreciates Tonga's firm adherence to the one-China policy, and stands ready to take the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Tonga as an opportunity to consolidate political mutual trust, better integrate the "Belt and Road" initiative with Tonga's development strategies, expand practical cooperation in various fields and enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, so as to constantly elevate bilateral relations to new highs. China supports Tonga in the construction of major production projects, infrastructure and projects related to people's livelihood. China is ready to carry out exchanges on agricultural technology with Tonga, and also welcomes Tonga's high-quality agricultural and fishery products to enter the Chinese market.

Li Keqiang extended his condolences over the severe cyclone disaster in Tonga not long ago, believed that the Tongan people can overcome difficulties and rebuild their homes, and reaffirmed that China is willing to provide assistance within its capability.

King Tupou VI expressed that although Tonga and China are far away from each other, yet bilateral relations enjoy sustained, stable and sound development since the establishment of diplomatic relations 20 years ago. Tonga unswervingly adheres to the one-China policy and stands ready to continuously deepen political mutual trust between the two sides, expand economic and trade cooperation as well as people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and strengthen cooperation in such fields as education, infrastructure, agriculture and food, in a bid to better realize mutual benefit and win-win results.

Yes moving into the pacific, not sure if the Tonga people will actually benefit much though if China moves their people there too.

Moving, they are there building and putting infrastructure in to many of the Pacific islands we have seen with our own eyes, also in Africa.

The question has been the last twelve months is the loans, the repayments for the works is very high so much so it is doubted that these little nations can repay them.
