What was the best rock/pop/music concert you ever attended?

This is a question I've been dying to ask you all for quite a while now. I have heard some great tales from my uncles and aunties about the rock concerts they went to as teenagers – from bands, who, at the time, may not have been too famous but ended up becoming quite popular, to the exact reverse situation, where bands that were once thought to have potential that neded up burning out before their time.

So, what was the best rock/pop/music concert you ever attended? Why was it so good?

Leon,

I saw a few at the old Sydney Stadium.

Looking back many were bloody terrible.

I saw Sinatra there, a class act, no encore, did his thing and walked off.

I went to the first Split Enz concert in Sydney, in 1975 I think. I was blown out by the zany theatrics and eclectic music. I had seen live performances of other more famous bands (at the time Split Enz weren't well known) like Santana etc but that Split Enz concert stood out for me. Still have their first 3 albums of which Mental Notes (first one) is the best. They changed their style later on but it was their earlier music I loved.

I was also a fan of The 69ers, a jug band who played at The Trolley Car Bar in Broadway, Sydney in the late '60s. They had a few concerts at Sydney Uni and put out an album. Their music was catchy, happy, funky and naughty for the times.

Robi,

I went bush in the early 60s and missed out on much of the music of the times. Between the ABC and a few local country stations, no concerts, no TV, I entered a time warp from a modern music viewpoint and possibly other areas as well.

Slim Dusty and others of his ilk there was plenty, not quite my style, then or now.

The NSB, not part of my life then, a Sydney girl like yourself speak of bands that are unknown to me.

Deprived I was.

Take it easy.

Leon, I was lucky enough to go to the Beatles final UK concert at Wembley Stadium. Back then the stadium was called the Empire Pool and seated 10,000 people. The Beatles were not the only ones on the bill that night, but people were crying all over the place because they would be breaking up after that.

The evening was electric, always will remember it. However, the noise was also tremendous and don't think I could go to such an event these days.

Oh wow! That would have been amazing and a truly great tale for the kids!

I remember back in the early 60s I used to go to Festival Hall in Melbourne for ...........

oops, hang on , that was for TV Ringside  :(

GERRY,   they did have tv ringside there but also had good acts,     i saw NAT KING COLE there when i was 16,    thats 60 years ago,    couldnt get over how tall he was,     AS a teen i grew up in warrnambool,    and all the half decent bands would go there,    to play at the PALAIS    de DANCE,     LOLOL,    oh, good days,    remember BOB BARNARD and his band were there,   they were of the same ilk as GRAHAME BELL,      S,D,     i saw FRANK SINATRA when he was here with LISA MOINNELLI,    and SAMMY DAVIES,      what a show,    as you say.    a class act,    i also saw his last show,    with EDDIE LAWRENCE,   he should never have done that one,      by that time he had cue cards everywhere,   white strips all over the stage,    showing him where to stand,    the seat i had was on the aisle,    right by where they come on and off stage,    he went by ,  was so close i could have touched him,    and yes,  he did have the bluest eyes iv ever seen,    love him,

Cats,

I saw Sammy Davis Jr too, good show. JOK well he was hard to get away from back then, seemed to stick his nose in all over the shop, not my thing.

There were some good spots arond Sydney if you liked Jazz.

El Rocco or the Jazz Cellar in the Cross had some talent from time to time. Adams Tavern I think it was had some as well.

It was great being young in Sydney at that time. I certainly made the most of it.

I went from there to Alice Springs, which was only around 5000 people or so back then, a bit of a change to say the least. We had to make our own entertainment and we did.

Take it easy.

i think i must have had a enior moment yesterday,   when i said about FRANK SINATRA,     it was STEVE LAWRENCE,    and EDDIE GORME,      wont be long now,  lol,

I never went to see Rock or Pop, saw a few shows at other places but was never interested in going to crowded places to stand up and watch bands as such,  I saw the likes of Slim Dusty / Neil Sedaka etc etc --can't even remember the others,  I was never much into it.

Not many rock or pop shows in my early years and preferred musical stage shows.  Saw Neil Diamond twice and Michael Crawford at Barossa Under the stars.

Took the kids to see God Spell, Jesus Christ Superstar  and that man who is not to be named (Rolf Harris).  Heaps of Pantomimes and stage shows.  Our kids loved Gilbert & Sullivan shows, Phantom of the Opera etc.

I would have loved to see Neil Diamond in his 1070s hey day.

have seen most of the big names that have come out,    GENESIS,      NEIL DIAMOND,   PAUL SIMON,    [WHO I THOUGH WAS THE BEST]    BUT i think we have one of the best entertainers right here in REG LIVERMORE,         he is one talented man,      can do anything,

Early Genesis would have been great to see! Was Peter Gabriel still in the band when you saw them?

yes leon.    think he was,    was years ago,   ill have to look at my program,    still have most of them,     talk about collecting junk, lol, lol,     have dozens here,    from ballet to MY FAIR LADY,

Hey cats , we may have danced together  :)

I used to go to the Palais in Warrnambool every Saturday night. They were fun times.

gerry,   if you were serious im sure we would have danced together,  where did you live,   ? not PORT FAIRY,    or PORTLAND,   ? LOT OF BLOKES USED TO COME OVER FROM THERE TO THE PALAIS   what years are you talking about,    lol, lol,       hope not one of my embarrising moments i cant tell foxy about,  lol, lol,   hey ,  just thinkink,      were you from warrnambol,     i did no a gerry,    but a few years older than me,   im dead serious,

thinking about it,   i dont think the GERRY i knew went to the dances,

Cats, I was living in Terang in those days -  can't remember dates but would have been around 1960 or soon after.

GERRY,    the GERRY  i knew lived in warrnambool,     so its not you im thinking of,     but would have been around the mid 50s early 60s,   P.M.  your last name,    wont go any further i promise,     im damn curious now,   did you know johnny kelleher from warrnambool,   or pat kean,  /?     if you knew them im sure i would have known you,     hope so,    its fun meeting up with old people we used to know,        we used to go to the TERANG PUB,    after hours,     that ws when i was older of course,      or to KOROIT,    to MICKY BURKES pub,    any of that ring a bell,

The best Jazz & music was after hours at the Wooloomooloo Pub in Sydney. The muso's used to go there after they finished their Gigs. Had a friend who was a muso & used to be able to get in with him. Usely leaving at 5am to go home.
