What consumer advocate says about aids and treatments for better for sleep
Sleep is only a problem when we don’t get enough. Which is why sleep aids and treatments are big business.
But what does consumer advocate CHOICE say about the range of offerings? Simply, be wary.
“Just like the mattress manufacturers who say you'll never sleep better than on their product, there are many brands and marketers making similarly dubious claims you should be wary of,” says CHOICE expert Chris Barnes.
Products that promise to give you a good night's sleep have long been a feature of CHOICE's lab testing and investigations.
"Marketing claims promising a better night's sleep are everywhere, but the evidence in many areas is lacking. In 2018, CHOICE gave Bioglan a Shonky award for useless homeopathic sleep tablets, and the 2020 Shonkys featured a 'sleep survey' used to sell expensive beds."
CHOICE has looked at many sleep remedies, from weighted blankets and homeopathic tablets to products that are designed to combat snoring and sleep apnoea.
Its advice? If sleep is a problem, consult your health professional.
Have you found a way to get a good night’s sleep? Can you share?
I was supposed to use CPAP for my severe sleep apnoea, but I couldn't tolerate it. My choices are now limited to a very expensive dental device which may not work anyway!
