We'd love your feedback on the classic forum

Hey there,

As you would have all no doubt noticed, we have re-implemented the YLC classic forum. We've taken your comments on board and given you what you asked for and we hope you can all get back into the forum format you know and love.

Over time, we plan to make some minor tweaks to the classic forum. Add a few fun features here and there. Maybe change the layout of the forum homepage a little. But we'd love your input on what you would like from the YLC forums.

So please use this forum discussion as a soapbox to share your feedback and constructive criticism. All will be taken into account and we'll also use this space to inform you of any future changes. We may even put some ideas to a vote.

In the meantime, please enjoy the classic forum.

Cheers,

Leon

Seems to be really working well Leon.

:) Love the fact I can remain logged in now. So wonderful not to have to login repeatedly.

I like the layout of the forum homepage. Simple with all necessary links below the most interesting two things to me: Featured discussions and Most recent posts.

Also appreciate that the "old" way of inserting images is back because it allows more modifications.

Many thanks to you and the team.

Thanks for your support RNR!

Yes, Leon, it seems to be a lot better now --keep up the good work thanks

Symbols don't work

Hi PlanB,

Can you be more specific please? Which symbols? We'd love to help!

Hi PlanB,

Have worked it out – our devs are reviewing now.

Thanks, Leon also the emotions are very tiny can they be made bigger, please

I see we are back to square one. My Bulgarian grandma used to say

ako ne e schupen, ne popravyai?te

(translated, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it).

Yes most definitely leave well enough alone. It was fantastic, of late it's been an absolute nightmare, can't find links can't get in, when you're halfway through doing something it clicks you out. You must remember, all people are not 100% TEC. savvy. A step in the right direction. Jacka

Thanks for your support Jacka. We tried something new, but sometimes, there's a lot to be said for the classics!

And people wonder why I stick to all the old Comp Progs - no hassle, no bugs, no virus, no Trojans. And all work.

Congrats Leon for listening - how about telling our Government how to do that?

I'm new here so can't comment on what went before. I do, however, have a problem in that I am logged into some articles and not others. There doesn't appear to be any option to log in to those articles. I am not on Facebook, don't have a Google account, don't do Twitter and not happy with the terms and conditions on Disqus so can anyone out there help?

Some more information if it helps to give me an answer. I am logged in to any articles that are in the Forum section. With the article about Tradies, is located in "Home>Finance>Property>Why tradies are in short supply and renovation costs are soaring" and I can't access any of those locations.

Thanks for reaching out to us Sue Ridge.

The log in to comment on the forum is different from the log in to comment on the website. You can find out all you need to know about this here.

Cheers,

Leon

Thanks Leon, I think I understand. If an article is in the Forum section, I can log in with my email and password. Any other articles raised that are not under a Forum heading can only be accessed by Disqus etc. If this is correct I will be limited as I don't like the Terms and Conditions that Disqus wants to impose. They appear to be an invasion of my privacy.

Hi Sue Ridge,

If you go into the Disqus settings, you can make changes to suit your privacy requirements. Contact [email protected] and he can help you with this. The privacy disclaimer is actually not much different to the most recent forum's settings. But if you have specific questions about it, please feel free to contact Drew.

Why the change to force people to use social media or Discus to comment on articles? I have noticed no comments since this recent change so obviously there are many that think the same way. Clearly YLC is not intetested in those who do not use social media.

I'm over 70, never worked with computers and I think I can handle some technology, KSS, but the problem may be to do with the administrators in this site being so young and savvy. They have grown up with technology and assume us "oldies" have the same knowledge.

Thanks for your input KSS.

We've made the change because it will prevent more people from trolling, abusing and bullying. It also gives us much better moderation tools, so we can stop spammers (which have been a problem on this forum and website) and because it will make it a much more pleasant environment for all of our members. And by no means are we 'forcing' anyone to do anything. You can either choose to use your social media account, or you can still create a Disqus account with your chosen user name.

It may take a while to get used to the new system, but if our members take issue with this change, I would hope they'd let us know on this forum discussion.

Hope that helps,

Leon

Pretty patronising response Leon. And pretty presumptuous that everyone has social media account - they don't!

Hi KSS,

You don't need a social media account. You can sign up for a Disqus account, which allows you to comment on the articles without having to log in with your social media account (if you do have one).

It's a big improvement on what we have had recently. Thank you.

Appreciate the feedback, Froggie. Enjoy!

I do not belong to any social media or a  Disqus account,  does that mean I am unable to use other parts of this forum Leon?

Your 'PlanB' login will allow you to make comments/posts on the forum, but you will need a Disqus account, or a Facebook, Google or Twitter account, to comment on the articles. Having a Disqus account has replaced having a separate YLC login for the website. Here's how to create a Disqus account with your chosen user name.

Sorry Leon,  but I am not understanding,  just what am I not able to get into -- can you explain it further,  I am not into opening up an account if I do not know what it is all about and why.

Was it something that I was able to get into before?

The account from which you are posting comments now allows you to do so on any page with the URL forums.yourlifechoices.com.au

If you wish to comment on a article that is outside of the forums, so on www.yourlifechoices.com.au, then you would need a disqus account.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, Leon for the explanation--

Boy it is so good to have this working better now

How can it be ' better' when you now need two logins to access what we used to access before all the changes with a single login?

Hi KSS,

The comments system we were using turned out to be a bit 'buggy' and often led to comments disappearing. This system – which is the world's most widely used comment system – allows us better control over comments, spam and most importantly, keeps the comments on page! To access this world-class system, you do need to log in via Disqus or your social media account (if you have one).

So glad to see everything back to normal Leon. THANK  YOU. It was driving me crazy having to keep logging in again every time I changed to a different topic/article. No system is going to be perfect, but as it is now works well.

Thanks Bushbaby. We'll keep working to make it even better.

I get 2 copies of each YLC now because YLC have included my alternate email contact obtained from ?  I have changed reinstated my registered access contact for YLC emails 2 days ago.  Hope the correction can be done soon.

Hi Crikey,

It may be because we merged the forum database with both new and old users. Please email [email protected] with the email address you'd like to keep on the database and he will remove the one you'd like omitted.

I response to Plan B's request for private messaging (below)

Q: Plan B

Leon as you know I am all for having private messaging -- surely we are adult enough to handle such ourselves, when we did I never saw any nasty at all -- PLEASE try it again

Response:

As you know, we had private messaging but it was abused by members and spammers. Far more people complained about what was happening via private messaging than those praising it.

We cannot moderate private messaging and yet we were continually being asked to admonish members for abuse carried out via this medium.

If we receive an overwhelming number of members requesting private messaging (on this discussion thread, so we can track it), then we may reconsider, but with disclaimers over the limitations YLC has in moderating the medium.

Our overarching concern is that we need to protect our members and also ourselves from breaches and abuse of communications made on or via YLC forums and and the website, as I'm sure you can understand.

Fair enough Leon -- thanks for your reply.

Really nice to see the forum back to its old self.

As for private messaging...what it would mean, as in the past, is more people on PM than on the actual forum.

I never noticed that Sophie -- I just got the odd private message on about 5 occasions and they were all friendly
