Waste not want not: the humble doggy bag

doggy bag

I'm sure many of you already know this: are you aware you can ask for a doggy bag at ALL restaurants around Australia, should you not be able to finish your meal? Many will give you the container to pack the food yourself. This is a great way to avoid waste and save money - because you'll have food for your next meal without it going to the tip.

Doggy bags are becoming increasingly popoluar, with sustainability and environmental issues becoming more mainstream, and even 'hip', so there is less associated  'embarrassment' as there may have been in the past.

I always ask for a doggy bag if there are left overs (which is rarely the case, I must say, with a husband who enjoys his food too much). How about you? Do you ask for a doggy bag? Why/why not?

I used to always ask for a doggie bag for leftovers the next day but, increasingly, more and more eating places are refusing to do this because of fears of being sued by people who eat that same food perhaps 2 weeks later, after not having stored it correctly.

Some places will turn a blind eye if you take along your own containers and put the leftovers in yourself.

Taking away your uneaten food with a container/bag supplied by the meal provider in Queensland is not permitted. Should you will to do this with your own receptacle you wear the results it it's subsequent consumption - be it food poisoning, whatever - not the meal provider.

Amendment to the above. Providing a "doggie bag" for one's leftover meal is not illegal, but is actively discouraged for the possible harm food may do if it is not eaten soon after leaving an eatery. My apologies for the misinformation.

This doesn't work well with liquids, but for other food items I always have a good sized square of aluminium foil in my handbag.  When folded, it takes up very little room

I used to but rarely eat out these days

I always ask for a doggie bag, usually without a problem. However some years back I was refused, so I walked to the nearby supermarket and bought some aluminium foil and wrapped it myself.
