Where did the Coronavirus 19 originate from? and anything relative to the virus.

Coronavirus is 'uniquely adapted to infect humans': Top vaccine scientist says it could only have come from an animal through a 'freak of nature' - and the possibility it leaked from Wuhan lab MUST be investigated

Scientists have produced evidence that the pandemic virus is 'uniquely adapted to infect humans', raising fresh questions over whether its origins were natural or could have occurred in a laboratory.

For those Australians flying to the USA here is the American situation on this virus.

There are now a total of seven confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US, distributed across four states in addition to two cases in Canada. Cases are suspected in several additional US states

Australian Government bars all non-Australians from China entry to Australia as Qantas suspends flights under tough new measures. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced unprecedented new control measures that will see all non-Australians travelling from mainland China stopped at the border in an attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The new measures, announced on Saturday afternoon, will mean all foreign travellers who have left or passed through mainland China will be denied

Of great concern is the posibility of it mutating.

Another undesirable outcome is that racists are emerging and targetting Chinese people.

Interesting article, thanks Twyla.

I don't really understand the "border shutdown". Are they going to send people back to China from Australian airports after they arrive? Or are they going to stop them from leaving China to travel to Australia? The actual details have not been made clear.

China temporarily bans wildlife trade, the area where the virus started has high intake of wild animals:

https://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/china-acts-on-coronavirus-and-temporarily-bans-wildlife-trade/

I think we need to push to ban it all together, please sign the petition on the page. By eating wild animals humans are more susceptible to diseases.

... my son and his partner arrived back in Melb. from Cairns yesterday afternoon .....was gobsmacked when he arrived at Melb. Airport!  80% of people wearing masks!! Then on the ride home in an Uber - passing thru the outskirts of the CBD - same!

He works in the CBD but said he is not considering wearing a mask when he returns to work tomorrow.....he thinks it's total "over reaction" by people!  Hmmmmm ..............is it?

Only people he saw wearing masks in Cairns were of Chinese/Asian origin.

We only have 12 confirmed cases in Oz so far. When it gets into the thousands I might consider wearing a mask when out. If it gets into tens of thousands or even millions I will definitely be wearing a mask. Have been thinking about how protective masks are? They only cover mouth and nose but what if someone's sneeze particles landed in your eyes? Or all over your skin which you might touch and transfer to your eyes? What if someone's sneeze particles lands on your mask? Would the virus be able to get through?

I can't remember being worried at all about SARS or MERS. Think I just carried on as though they didn't exist. What is different this time that is causing greater panic? I know it spreads more quickly but it's not as lethal. A death rate of 2% is about the same as the flu isn't it? I suppose it's a greater worry than flu because it's a new virus that could mutate?...and there is no vaccine yet. The 'unknown' aspect of it causes some anxiety.

Well added to the bushfires - drought and now this Virus - the ramifications are possibly huge for this country.

ScoMo's supposed "mega surplus" is diminishing by the day - interest rates at an all time low - housing at an all time high - Utilities at an all time high - WAGES at an all time low - tourism/hospitality/retail and airlines all "panicking" ...  and Australia the most expensive place to live!

Meat/dairy/vegetables/fruit etc.  all to cost more and some in short supply .......(drought/bushfire affected)

Well known retail outlets "going under" at a rate of knots monthly!!

Not a great start to 2020!

The "R" word (Recession) has been bandied around for the past couple of years - surely this Coronavirus is now the icing on the cake?

Recession?  U'betcha'!!!  (just my opinion)

No one dies from viruses they die from complications, once you get sick with a flu or flu type virus and your bodies immune system is not working as it should then you have more chance of contracting other disease or organ failure. Going to hospital when you have the flu for example gives you more chance of picking up something else while you are there and with the bad hospital food it is hard for your immune system to work properly too.

I am not buying into the panic because I have my suspicions something else is at play here, if anyone has any conspiracy theories I would love to hear them.

Why is China asking Apple to delete private messaging apps? Was this virus deliberately released to cut down on population? Is it another way of China getting more control of the people? Was the photo of the old man lying in the street staged? Why is he lying so straight if he collapsed?

... you know what musicveg - I thought that exactly!!  Why was he lying so straight?  Also when you collapse (not that I'd know thank heavens) wouldn't you more likely to fall "forwards" or maybe to the side?

I'm glad you noticed that also ......bizarre.

I had no idea Apple were asked to delete info.  Geez .....more bizarre.

Excellent article but scary for we older folk:

FROM OUR OBSESSIONThe Aging Effect

New thinking is required to serve an aging population.

Close to 10,000 people have contracted the new coronavirus that originated in Wuhan, China—more cases than SARS in 2003. So far, 213 people have died. The preliminary fatality rate for 2019-nCoV hovers around 3%—which is low, but still concerning because of the number of cases accumulating.

But that fatality rate is likely to be higher in older adults. Unofficial open-source data from researchers based in the UK and China show that out of 41 deaths, 39 were in people over 50. Bloomberg reports similar figures. While that’s not unexpected, it indicates the need for effective therapies targeted at this population. And as the proportion of adults over 50 continues to increase globally, future pandemics could be deadlier than they’ve been in the past.

“During the original SARS outbreak, we found that the fatality rate was 10%,” says Vineet Menachery, an immunologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch who studies how coronaviruses affect aging immune systems. “But that jumped to 50% in people over the age of 50.” There was a similar pattern of fatalities with MERS in 2015.

All three viruses—SARS, MERS, and now 2019-nCoV—fall within the category of coronaviruses, which get their names from the spiky crown of proteins on the viruses’ outer shell. So while we don’t have a firm fatality rate for older adults with 2019-nCoV, it’s likely that it’ll also be higher than in younger adults.

There are two reasons older adults are more susceptible to infections. First, seniors are more likely to have other chronic health conditions, like diabetes or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, that make it harder for their bodies to cope with damage caused by a new pathogen. Every year, the majority of flu deaths are seen in people 65 or older.

Second, the immune system changes with age—particularly in its ability to respond to coronaviruses. Unlike the flu virus, which does most of the damage to your body on its own, most of the symptoms from coronavirus infections actually come from the body’s immune response, Menachery says. Although he and his lab team are still characterizing these reactions, it seems like coronaviruses encourage older immune systems to kick in with extra inflammation, which can have a cascading effect.

These downstream effects can be particularly acute when the virus lives and reproduces exclusively in a vital organ like the lungs—which SARS, MERS, and 2019-nCoV all do. In an effort to control the infection, the body will wall off portions of the lung that are harboring most of the infection. These sections are then not available to take in oxygen. “You can still breathe, but not with the same capacity. If you have COPD and heart disease, you have less capacity to begin with,” Menachery says, which ultimately makes the infection more likely to be fatal.

Unlike the flu, which has higher fatality rates in both young children and older adults, coronaviruses tend to only be more dangerous for seniors. In a paper published on Jan. 29, scientists writing in the New England Journal of Medicine recorded 0 cases of 2019-nCoV in children 15 and under. This doesn’t mean that children are immune to the virus, but they may be better at fighting it off if they’re otherwise healthy.

As people live to older ages and constitute a bigger part of the global population, we’ll need better health interventions to protect them specifically, Menachery says. This will be a unique challenge for scientists developing vaccines and treatments for 2019-nCoV; it’s hard to model aging because animals like mice don’t age the same way that humans do.

Right now, it’s critical that scientists develop treatments appropriate for older adults affected by 2019-nCoV, who are at the highest risk of complications. But seniors will have to be at the front of public health officials’ minds as they prepare for future pandemics, too. The more humans press into animal territory through farming, urbanization, and deforestation, the more likely it is that a virus present in animals will mutate to be transmissible in humans, just like 2019-nCoV likely did. “Will we have another coronavirus in the next 10 years?” Menachery asked rhetorically. “At this point, I’d have to say yes.”

Update: This story was updated on Jan. 31 with current infection and death figures.

The reason I think it effects older people is because generally they are not healthy, our livers accumulate waste and our organs are not working at full capacity, so therefore it is more important to eat healthy and make sure you get adequate Vitamin c and nutrients and minerals through fresh wholefoods preferably plant foods. Pathegons and viruses love meat, dairy and especially eggs, they feed on this and you have more chance of them growing. If you have a read of the book "Liver Rescue" by Anthony Williams you can have an insight to this reasoning. Also test in labs show that cancer cells grow from animal protien but if fed plant protein they do not grow. And if you do not consume some raw green leafy veg every day you have more chance of getting sick too.

(my opinion is derived from my reading and research and not meant to be medical advice)

You know when you enter a Bank there is a sign saying "Please remove your helmet", does this apply to those wearing face masks as well? Just wondering.

More dreaded news.....China now has Bird Flu on top of the coronavirus. Stock markets have reacted to this, and companies are those who have investments in China, are all pulling out.

Beats me why they didn't invest in their own countries rather than a volatile overseas company. You never know when they will crash or as in this case, and entirely different approach to a crash. Who would have thought a bug, a virus, a bacteriia, would bring them down.

Reminds me of the saying "Pride comes before a fall".

Interesting article in the media about Thailands medicals, they seemed to have mixed an anti viral drug with an anti Aids HIV medication which appears to kill this Coronavirus virus.

Wonder if it is a conspirarcy by the USA to bring China down?

Now the stock plunge!

Fears over coronavirus wiped more than $400billion off Chinese stocks today in the first trading session since January 23 (pictured: an investor monitors stock prices in Beijing)

Fears over coronavirus wiped more than $400billion off Chinese stocks today in the first trading session since the Lunar New Year break.

Markets plunged by nearly nine per cent in their first session since January 23, since when the outbreak has spiralled into a global crisis which has killed 361 people.

Chinese stocks can only fall by 10 per cent on one day and hundreds of companies hit that limit on Monday.

Shanghai stocks ended down 7.72 per cent, their biggest drop in five years.

There is also reports coming out of China that the doctors are making their own disposable gowns and masks out of rubbish liners as there has not been enough to go around!

Back from China to West Australia.

The Qantas flight landed at the RAAF Base Learmonth just after 4pm local timePassengers will be taken to Christmas Island, where they will be quarantined Of the 243 passengers, five are under two years old while 89 are younger than 16

Footage has emerged showing 243 'vulnerable' Australians on board an evacuation  flight that landed in Western Australia out of Wuhan - the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak.

The emergency Qantas flight landed at the RAAF Base Learmonth, near Exmouth, just after 4pm on Monday.

Passengers filmed themselves holding up what they called their 'golden tickets' at the airport while wearing face masks before boarding the flight from China.

The airline provided passengers with a bright yellow plastic 'clinical waste' bags on their seats.

Inside the emergency kit was sanitizer, face masks and hand wipes.

Professional roller blader Rob Kellet, whose girlfriend remains in Wuhan, filmed himself on the plane saying: 'Who knows what the right choice was but it's the safer one.'

His friend Josh Nielzen, also a roller blader, shared messages to his father on social media.

'Hey dad just thought I'd give you the latest update,' he said.

'There's a flight leaving here in five hours and I'm at the airport,' to which his father responded: 'Great news Josh.'

Passengers are set to be transported by smaller military aircraft to Christmas Island, where they will be quarantined for at least 14 days.

It's anticipated the passengers could be accommodated overnight in Exmouth after their departure was delayed by about six hours.

WA Health Minister Roger Cook said it would likely take considerable time for the passengers to be assessed once they landed at Learmonth.

'My understanding is the federal government is anticipating that scenario and they have the appropriate accommodation for those patients on the ground,' he told reporters in Perth.

WA authorities have made contingency plans to immediately transport any unwell passengers to hospitals in Perth if needed.

Of the 243 passengers, five are under two years old while 89 are younger than 16.

Chief medical officer Brendan Murphy said the plan was for passengers to be isolated in small family groups on Christmas Island.

'There won't be a full mingling,' he said in Canberra.

If people have a Fire Wall and up to date protection the warning comes up before the site is opened.

Correct/modern software updates the computers all the time.

I notice there were a batch of Windows 10 sold in the UK that had been destined for Russia, so many people in the UK were having problems up dating Windows 10 because of this, when it was looked into the License was written in Russian!  LOL

Have not heard of this happening in Australia though.

But talking about software is off topic Beemee.

Yes Beemee, corona virus scams are apparently going "viral" ... sad irony in terms of the the naming.

.... yes these virus scam's are apparently everywhere!  Pathetic!

Quietly wondering how they formulate these stats ....I mean are people who get the virus compelled to inform the authorities?
