Coronavirus is 'uniquely adapted to infect humans': Top vaccine scientist says it could only have come from an animal through a 'freak of nature' - and the possibility it leaked from Wuhan lab MUST be investigated

Scientists have produced evidence that the pandemic virus is 'uniquely adapted to infect humans', raising fresh questions over whether its origins were natural or could have occurred in a laboratory.

Read this today about wearing masks to protect you, seems those who may be effected should be wearing them but then wouldn't they end up being targeted by bullies if seen walking around with masks?

https://www.sbs.com.au/news/the-feed/do-you-need-to-wear-a-mask-to-protect-yourself-from-the-coronavirus?cx_cid=edm:newspm:2019

I doubt very much a facial mask helps, how long does one wear a mask before it is caked in germs?

One would need to have a good supply of them for several weeks for any real protection.  Changing them at least twice a day out in the public arena.

I agree Celia, I cannot find any evidence whether they work or not, but the makers of them are doing very well out of the sales with the bushfires and now this.

Yep, if one has a healthy immune system they can withstand a lot of issues. Also, the coronavirus has been around for years, with different strains manifesting in several countries. It did not start with China. A few years ago, camels caused an outbreak in Jordan. As with any infection, smokers stand the greatest chance of carking it before anyone ese. All the Chinese who have died are seniors and heavy smokers.

Now here is where you fall down on your celery sword musicveg vaccines do help to prevent the spread of infection, and even if you are fit, strong and healthy and do not succumb to a disease, you can be a carrier and pass it on to someone else.

(This is not an “opinion” but a fact, and you are quite welcome to take it as sound medical advice).

You can think all you like ABE it is typical for you to attack me once again. Vaccines are never properly tested EVER! do your research, even WHO admitted vaccines are not properly tested for safety either. Blaming healthy people to be carriers is ridiculous, that is the biggest myth ever. Can't pass on anything that you don't have, you have to be sneezing, spreading saliva etc to spread disease anyway, it is not that easy.

Where did you get the information that "All the Chinese who have died are seniors and heavy smokers?" Source please....

I am with you musicveg,  vaccines are never 100% and have a hell of a lot of unhealthy ingredients in them as well.

That is not the source I asked for!

Buzz off ana - that was not meant for you!

@ musicveg

Some germs can cause asymptomatic infection, which means that the person can have the ‘germ’ in their body, but they don’t have any symptoms of the disease or they have very mild symptoms and don’t really feel sick, according to the Division of Infectious Diseases at UAMS. And if the particular “germ” can be transmitted by coughing or sneezing, for example, then the person may transmit the infection to someone else without knowing it and without having any symptoms themselves.

Do your research!!!

Ny19 ........ lol - what do you expect from a total tool?  It's a "scientist" remember? Along with all it's other made up BS ...... Topics always go well til Trollboy appears - should have been banned long ago!

Yes ABE the only way to spread a disease is if you are carrying a virus and you sneeze, cough or spit on someone, chances are very very slim otherwise. Do we all have to be tested to see if we are carrying something to go out in the world?

Being the scientist he purports to be he should have been able to answer my question??? But obviously he couldn't answer it, so one has to question the pretend "scientist" claim.

Buzz off ana troll.

Quote Foxy - “total tool” me????

LOL, well look who’s talking, the private school kid who, never was, who failed grammar at school, hahahaha, Now here’s a short lesson for you. Listen up.

Today children, we’re going to talk about possessive nouns and plural nouns.

noun names a person, place, thing. A possessive noun shows ownership by adding an apostrophe, an "s" or both. So children –

the plural for panda is pandas, likewise the plural for koala is koalas. The plural for zoo is zoos.

E.g of a possessive noun: The fox’s lair is littered with chook feathers. The plural for fox is foxes.

Got it now Foxy?

@ musicveg

Just breathing out without coughing or sneezing is enough for a person to spread the virus Check out recent research led by the University of Maryland.

Except for your extreme veganism, you are on the right track for a good immune system – that’s a compliment by the way!

Now I'm , off to have a glass of WA's finest red, see ya.

Cheers

ABE: Why do you say "extreme veganism" I consume honey! I eat a wholefood diet, I have never been extreme in anything, each to his own, I am trying to live a long time to see how the world turns out and want to do it without relying on medication or having ailments in old age. Alcohol is not something I partake in because I like to keep a clear head and a clean liver, plus it is a depressant. Rather eat the grapes for the antioxidants. But go ahead and have one for me.

..... you appear to be getting close to needing some form of psychiatric help ABE?  Either that or the copious bottles of cheap Cab. Sav. are starting to affect you?

Chinese woman in Melbourne becomes the EIGHTH person in Australia to have coronavirus - as it's revealed almost 50,000 people arrive from China every WEEK

A Chinese woman in Melbourne has been found to have the coronavirus She had been in Australia for a week and was showing symptoms for a few days, number of cases in Australia is now eight, with two more ill Aussies in China

A Chinese woman in Melbourne has been confirmed to have the coronavirus, taking the total number of cases in Australia to eight.

The woman, in her 40s, is visiting from China's Hubei province - the epicentre of coronavirus - and went to a GP earlier this week.

She was referred to hospital and tests later found that she had contracted the virus.

She has been in Australia for about a week and had reportedly been showing symptoms for two or three days.

Two other Australians have been infected in China.

Meanwhile, concerns are growing over a Tiger Airlines domestic flight which an infected man boarded last week.

Authorities are seeking to track down passengers on board Flight TT566 from Melbourne to the Gold Coast, on January 27.

The man came from Wuhan - the Chinese city at the epicentre of the virus outbreak - and flew in to Melbourne via Singapore on January 22.

He developed symptoms on the flight, which was carrying about 150-200 passengers.

He spent five days in the city before flying north to the Gold Coast, where he became increasingly unwell at his accommodation and called an ambulance.

He was travelling with eight other tourists, four of whom have fallen ill and are being tested for the virus.

Wonder when Australia will cancel all flights, a bit late now I would have thought.

Chinese dog owners rush to buy face masks for their pooches amid coronavirus outbreak as experts warn pets could also get infected by the deadly disease Chinese pet owners rush to buy face masks for their dogs amid coronavirus outbreak

Chinese pet owners are flocking to buy face masks for their dogs amid coronavirus outbreak to prevent their pooches from catching and spreading the deadly disease which has killed 170 people, MailOnline can reveal. One Beijing-based online seller says he is now selling 10 times the number of special masks for dogs every day than before. The news comes after China's top expert for infectious diseases warned that pets might also be infected by the novel coronavirus, which has so far spread to 21 countries and regions and sickened more than 7,900 people

Another article that explains the development of coronavirus, sars and ebola and how plant medicine can help, I am posting this for those interested not for those who do not believe in the power of plants, so please do not attack me personally. I found the article very interesting and thought I would share it.

The World Health Organization had declared the coronavirus outbreak to be a global health emergency

The 'public health emergency of international concern' is the highest warning the UN health agency can give

Just one week ago, WHO officials said it was too early to declare the outbreak an emergency

Have to quietly wonder if the world knows everything that is going on re: Coronavirus.

I mean think there's been something like 10 Chinese cities each with populations numbering in the millions that have been locked down, for an illness that has infected about 7,000 people globally and has killed about 170 globally?

Saw TV footage somewhere last night of Wuhan I think and it looked like a ghost town.  So given China's reaction just sort of wondering a. If the whole Coronavirus situation is a lot worse both in death toll and those infected than the authorities are claiming so as not to cause panic. Or b. That China is being extra diligent due to lessons learnt from SARS - although can't quite recall if SARS actually started in China or not.

I mean from where I stand it almost seems as though Coronavirus' impact illness-wise (if we are to be believe current statistics) is possibly less than the average Australian flu season both in contagion and death rates - and we have access to flu vaccines.

Yes you're right about SARS Shetso1.

Between November 2002 and July 2003, an outbreak of SARS in southern China caused an eventual 8,098 cases, resulting in 774 deaths reported in 17 countries, with the majority of cases in mainland China and Hong Kong. No cases of SARS have been reported worldwide since 2004. In late 2017, Chinese scientists traced the virus through the intermediary of civets to cave-dwelling horseshoe bats in Yunnan province.

The new coronavirus’ fatality rate has not yet been determined with accuracy, but it seems to be around 2% so far. SARS was more deadly, with a fatality rate of 9.6%.

Read the article I posted about how it developed, Conoravirus is very similar to the SARS virus, here is a bit of the article:

What is the nCoV-2019?

The virus has been officially named nCoV-2019 (or 2019-nCoV) coronavirus as of now.

Sequencing of the virus has determined it to be 75 to 80 percent match to SARS-CoV and 85 percent plus similar to multiple coronaviruses found in bats.

SARS stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome. It is also a coronavirus, or CoV.

Researchers from the Wuhan Institute of Virology published a paper on January 23, 2020. Their paper informs that nCoV-2019 has a 96 percent genome match with a bat coronavirus.

They also stated that nCoV-2019 utilizes the same cell entry receptor as the SARS-CoV of 2002-2004. The receptor is ACE2. We'll discuss the importance of this later.

It has yet been determined whether the infection is as lethal as SARS. SARS is another outbreak that began in China in 2002, infecting people through 2004. More than 700 people died worldwide of SARS.

A study published on January 24 from University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital in Shenzhen studied six patients of nCoV-2019. They also determined that the virus was most similar to a SARS coronavirus found in Chinese horseshoe bats.

I am having a lot of suspicion about what the Chinese are doing, I wonder whether they are using it as an excuse to put more fear into their citizens, with more fear comes more control and they might be seeing how they can control everyone. I really feel sorry for them, how are they getting access to food and water I wonder?

And what really gets is more people die of preventable diseases worldwide than any virus does. I have not found the statistics but feel free to find them and share here, thanks.

The Christmas Island detention centre.

The Christmas Island detention centre.... a place for 600 people to stay for a fortnight before travelling onto Australia.

Perhaps this should have been introduced last month

..... after all we are an island ... how hard can it be ?

Are they going to move the Tamil family that are stuck there? Seems cruel if they have to still be there and have the risk of contracting the virus especially the little kids.

If people are isolated they will be kept away from others for 14 days.

"People who have come from China from the province will be restricted to the isolation area ... so people won't be coming or going."

... quite a few have decided to stay in China!  They were concerned about lack of internet access - mobile phone usage - their "rights" once there (family etc.)  .......don't blame them - they are being transferred into the "unknown"!

Once people get onto Christmas Island who knows how long they could be forced to stay there?  Govt. once again not making things clear enough for people!

Sounds like solitary confinement, I hope they will have on hand someone to help with mental issues. I pity the kids who will be really effected mentally.

Well given they are (as reported) "Australian" citizens - they would be aware of the controversy of Christmas and Manus Isles.

Question:  What would any of "us" do under the circumstances?  I personally would not want to go to CI?

Why can't they be brought back into Australia and onto a floor of a designated hospital under quarantine?  Why send them to Christmas Isle?

..or better still - let them stay in China who in another few days - will have that 1000+ bed "wonder" Corona virus hospital finished and set to go?

The people I have seen on Skype are all young - not people over 50???

Beats me .......

Yes I cannot understand why the Government chose to put them on Christmas Island, but it will be a real insight for them to see how refugees are being treated. Who is going to look after them if they do get sick while they are there now that Medivac has been squashed? The whole thing is very suspicious to me.

..... ever thought it could be a deterent to tell them they are going there?  I'm sure ScoMo's "money tree" must be almost diminished by now what with all the "spending" he has supposedly done of late?

Maybe the Govt. don't want the costs of air lifting them out and the cost of them on CI and staff ...all the other costly "things" that would have to be put in place for people (especially If they do get ill?) .....

I read that Scomo is working with Jacinta Ardern to evacuate the Aussies and NZer's so maybe going halvies.

I read that the evacuees will have to pay $1,000 each to be evacuated.

... me too!  Who'd wanna' pay $1000 and end up on CI?  They can buy a new iphone in China for less than that if they wish to stay.

Also just reading that the British flight into China to rescue Brits was at lunch time and they only gave people 2 hours notice.  So the plane went back nearly empty, how crazy is that.

I read that article on SBS website and it said they did not know what the old man died from, they are just taking precautions.

Think I heard a similar report around the ridges about an elderly person collapsing in a shopping centre or restaurant or some public place in China and people were afraid of assisting her/him  for fear of Coronavirus contagion...no idea if he/she actually had the illness or not.

Poor bugger - whoever they were - probably passed out from panic of the illness!!!

Actually think I'd be reasonably OK with a 14 day quarantine stint on Christmas Island if I wanted to get  out of China at this time.

However my concerns would be that the government should pay for  the flights out - I mean how would you be if you had babies/young kids or elderly relatives wanting to get out and you couldn't come up with the money - you'd be stuck.  Taxpayer money goes to all sorts of ridiculous things (eg.  think I heard yesterday about some $160,000 grant or thereabouts investigating the health benefits of target shooting or some such - and this sort of rot happens all the time). So would have no problem with taxpayer dollars being spent on flying Australian citizens out of China at this time.

My other concern would be that Christmas Island medical personnel  are equipped with intensive care facilities to handle critically ill patients - have heard it is but think this should be double checked in this instance.

Also the health of Christmas Island locals must also be considered.  Think  I heard somewhere that the young asylum seeker family currently living at CI detention centre will be separated a distance away from the Australian citizens being quarantined from China.  But this family and CI locals must be kept safe.

This  is a personal opinion only but wondering where else in Australia could the 600 people wanting to leave China be quarantined for 14 days?  Although think they have a Chinese netball team and staffers holed up in a hotel in Queensland somewhere and quietly wondering how that's working out.  Seems to be OK to this point in time so would quaranting those coming into Australia in hotels in the community be the better option??

I'm not sure of the answer - I just know if it was me I wouldn't have a problem with being quarantined on CI at this time under these circumstances.

Why has U.S. and Japan and other counries got their citizens out immediately?  Said on news that Australia is still awaiting China's "Ok" to remove people?  Does China have some kind of "grudge" against Oz?

Also heard that the runway on CI is too small to accept Qantas aircraft - which means evacuee's will have to go to Darwin (via Qantas) first....and then be transferred to smaller planes to get to CI......seems like a real "mishmash" to me?

... ok so just reported that a Boeing 747 has just landed in Hong Kong on it's way to China from Oz.

Be interesting to see just how many of these "Australian citizens' take up the offer to leave.

Think I heard something like 147 have taken up the offer.  Also heard one woman with 3 young kids saying she was afraid of catching Coronavirus during the 2 hour plane flight from China to Oz and was concerned about quarantining within the plane.

She!s got a point - a confined area for two hours would be concerning.

Apparently US as other countries only took out their embassy staff and families.

...... We do not have embassy staff in Wujan.

The first OZ Health has already landed on Christmas Island getting it ready ... Ch 7 apparently will show  the facility on the news tonight.

Shetso1 hi!

Think the flight between Australia and China is 10 hours!  It Takes 2 hours flying time between Perth and Karratha;   5 hours between Perth and Sydney.  Perth to Singapore is 5 hours.

Fair enough and thanks for clarification Celia...I really didn't have any idea how long it would take I was just quoting what the woman on ABC 24 was saying when she was talking about her concerns travelling with her young children, think she said a couple of hours...but with a 10 hour flight she'd probably be even more concerned.

Shetso1 ........ well I thought this rather bizarre - today's paper:-

SICK MAN FEARS STRANDS PASSENGERS

Passengers trapped onboard a Hobart Jetstar flght for THREE HOURS spoke of their ordeal........ when passengers got up to disembark - the doors did not open!  After a "short delay" an announcement was made that all passengers were to resume their seats and wait for "intermittent updates"!

Jetstar were doing their best to keep passengers calm"  said Lachlan Rule of Melbourne - .  We were told there was a "medical emergency onboard and a man was unwell who had been to China!!

THREE HOURS LATER... passengers were allowed to leave the plane and the unwell man was left -  confined to the back of the plane!!!

WTF?  A full plane sat on the tarmac for 3 hours with a sick man in the back?? WHY didn't they get allll the other passengers off ASAP FIRST? OR get him off first?? Am I in la la land or what?

......  meant to add also - obviously Jetstar are not to blame for this incident - they obviously "sat on the tarmac" waiting/getting advice from the "powers that be" whoever the hell they are/were?

I would want to get off that plane quick fast!  Wonder why they were made to sit in that confined space for so long?  Pathetic IMO ............

I just saw a photo in this  morning's Telegraph of Sydney's China Town completely deserted. Shoppers are not wanting to go there to shop. .
