Coronavirus is 'uniquely adapted to infect humans': Top vaccine scientist says it could only have come from an animal through a 'freak of nature' - and the possibility it leaked from Wuhan lab MUST be investigated

Scientists have produced evidence that the pandemic virus is 'uniquely adapted to infect humans', raising fresh questions over whether its origins were natural or could have occurred in a laboratory.

The Chinese metropolis of Chengdu locked down its 21.2 million residents to contain a Covid-19 outbreak, a seismic move in the country’s vast Western region that has largely been untouched by the virus.

The lockdown of Chengdu Thursday came after 157 new cases were reported. The city, which accounts for about 1.7% of China’s gross domestic product, is home to numerous technology companies and automakers. Foxconn Technology Group, the world’s largest assembler of Apple Inc.’s iPhones, is moving to a closed-loop manufacturing system for the iPads it makes there, according to a person familiar with the decision, while Volvo Car AB suspended work at its factory.

Pictures show Chengdu residents panic buying as the 157 Covid cases lock down 21 million people.

Scientists are working to develop COVID-19 vaccines that:

• provide more robust protection against new variants and sub-variants
• offer longer lasting protection
• provide similar levels of protection from a single dose
• deliver a strong response from lower doses of active ingredient
• don't require freezing or refrigeration, and/or have an extended shelf life
• offer different routes of administration, e.g. patches or nasal vaccination via breathing in.

First multi-strain COVID-19 vaccine approved for use in Australia after government backs Moderna shot.

The federal government has approved a COVID-19 vaccine that specifically targets two coronavirus variants of concern, including the original Omicron strain. The first doses of the bivalent vaccine have already arrived in the country and will now undergo batch testing by Australia's medical regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

Infectious diseases expert Robert Booy said lab data showed this bivalent vaccine was helpful in preventing infection from all Omicron variants, over and above what existing vaccines are expected to provide.

Professor Booy also said the bivalent vaccine could be used as a fifth shot in the future.

"So if you've had four … you would have had the most recent one within the last few months, and that would protect you until at least Christmas," he said. "So it might be something you do in March or April, at the same time you get your flu jab."

In view that research shows that the efficacy wanes after 4 months, Christmas, I cannot understand why Booy would be recommending to wait until March or April.

Surely the vulnerable should be able to receive the bivalent booster after 4 months and not wait till next year, especially with the virus continually mutating.
