A police investigation is underway at the Howard Springs quarantine facility following reports several people absconded in the early hours of the morning.

Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services told NCA Newswire the operation was ongoing and head checks were underway.

The number of individuals involved in the escape has yet to be confirmed.

The incident is the second time in a week that a returned traveller has escaped from quarantine at Howard Springs. Just last week a 27-year-old male allegedly absconded from the facility and was later found by police on Darwin’s main strip.

In January, a 33-year old woman scaled the fence and walked off but was located by police within 15 minutes.

Trio who climbed a fence to break out of remote quarantine centre are captured after a massive search amid fears mutant Omicron Covid strain could spread from infected traveller at the facility

Three people have escaped the Howard Springs quarantine centre in the Northern Territory, sparking fears the Omicron Covid-19 variant could spread after a man at the facility was confirmed to have the new mutation.  A large number of police have surrounded the facility just outside Darwin after reports the trio escaped at around 4.40am on Wednesday. Authorities are investigating and conducting a widespread search of the area.

A man tested positive for the mutated variant on Monday, with growing fears the virus may have leaked into the community

Tributes are flowing for a frontline Victorian nurse described as “a real angel” after she died from Covid.

Gillian “Jill” Dempsey had been an emergency department nurse at the Angliss Hospital in Melbourne’s east since 2007.

Ms Dempsey died at Box Hill Hospital’s intensive care unit on Sunday afternoon after contracting Covid.

A sixth case of the Omicron variant has been confirmed in New South Wales. NSW Health said the fully vaccinated traveller who recently visited southern Africa tested positive to the variant.

The man arrived on flight QR908 from Doha to Sydney on November 25 and tested positive to COVID-19 yesterday.

The man arrived on the same flight as the Central Coast woman who tested positive to Omicron yesterday. NSW Health has issued an exposure site alert which was visited by the man.

Anyone who attended the Chemist Warehouse, The Grove in Liverpool on Monday November 29 between 8.10pm and 8.15pm is now deemed a close contact.

If you attended the venue at that time you must immediately get tested and isolate until a negative result is received.

The man had spent the last six months in Nigeria, which is not one of the eight African countries subject to the border closure issued on Saturday.

It is not yet known whether he contracted the virus in Nigeria or while on the flight from Doha. NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said he believes the man only has mild symptoms.

"We're hoping that stays the case," he said.

"And I thank him for coming forward and being tested.

" Further testing today should confirm whether he does have the Omicron strain.

The person is fully vaccinated and returned a positive COVID-19 test on Wednesday December 1. Following genome sequencing, the case was today confirmed as the Omicron variant. It is not yet known if the case was acquired in the ACT or NSW.

Full ABC story.

NSW figures have increased today - back over 300 again.

With the news from ACT it will not be too long before Omicron will spread

Seems to be more contagious than Delta.... hopefully it is not as deadly.

Have there been any deaths or serious complications attributed to Omicron?

Do not know that Axel, but there was a death in Darwin Hospital of an Aboriginal lady today.

Yes, I heard Celia.  I don't think it was from Omicron.

I hope the poor woman's death is not  a harbinger of others in her area.

R rate in Omicron epicentre in South Africa soars from below one to 3.5 in just weeks as UK Government scientist rubbishes claims that super-strain is milder

R rate in Omicron-stricken South Africa may have soared from below one to three in a week

Public Health Officials in Guateng province estimate that the R value - a key measure used to gauge how fast a wave is growing - could be as high as 3.5. For comparison, the UK's has never been above 1.6. The Omicron strain has triggered a meteoric rise in cases in South Africa, mostly concentrated in Guateng, since the country that first alerted the world about the highly-evolved virus on November 24. Nationally, cases there soared to 11,535 on Thursday marking a 370 per cent rise in a week, and up a third on around 8,500 yesterday.

[when all this started the scientists warned there would be variants, but I didn't expect so many, I sometimes wonder if  there is a James Bond Theme with some nasty men sitting mutating this virus for their amusement I hope not]
