Veterinary costs

I took my dog to the vet yesterday - he has a couple of nasty looking, weepy sores on his head. They were diagnosed as "hot sores" and I was given a small tube of antibiotic cream and 45 antibiotic tablets for him. I received great service and gentle and considerate treatment for my dog.
I was surprised at the cost however and when I got home, I looked up both products on the internet. The cream which cost me $25, I could get for around $12 on the internet and the pills which cost me over $80 for 45, I found priced at $10.70 for 56 of them. Now, every business needs to make a profit, but I think that if I can buy these products for these price, a vet should be able to do better. I felt decidedly "ripped off" and left feeling also that some of these people are really taking advantage of the love we have for our pets.
As a pensioner, it seems to me that I am coming to the point where I cannot afford the quality of medical treatment my little buddy deserves or even worse, I just cant afford a pet.

The cost at the Vets. is far too high and really sad as older people

need their pets and the pets need them.

....

We spent over $300 on our two cats some months back

and like you kfc astounded at the cost of the tablets.

...

There was a really elderly man at the Vets. when we were there

and at the counter the girl said that's $600 how do you wish to pay it?

and the man said "I do not have the money so can I pay some now"?

...

I was really wanting to just pay the bill for his old dog but although

I have at times paid things for people I felt needed help, never that much :(

and he may have had more in reality than us as we can never always

judge by appearance but I do not think so :( also he may have been

really offended if I had said "I will pay it" I knew Peter would not mind

in the least if I had, but sometimes we are not sure what to do are we?

...

Animals rely on us but I really think Vets overcharge

Hope your dog is fine now kfc.

Phyl.

Have you looked at Pet Insurance kfc, sometimes it is included in your house insurance/ Cally

It's not only vets.

Recently I tried to buy a large container of betadine at the local chemist - was $23 so I did not bother,

Later I went to another chemist and same product was $13.50,

I got that one.

And you would need a gallon of Betadine

with that toe hey Fwed? It is great for the pets as well.

.....

I am not infering about how big your feet are at all. :red:

Bad luck not into shoes yet hey. Good you can be on your bike

even if it is Seths. Then again Seth should learn to share

anyway.

What bike ?

Oh no bike? just a wheel? never mind

could ya call it a unicycle could ya?

Need good balance do you have that Fwed?

I used to be a veterinary nurse years ago ,and remember that the firm I worked for used to buy vaccines in at $1,25 each but charged$26.50each, Even though I worked there we still had to pay full price rough eh! Back in october last year my daughter had to pay $2600 in vet fees for their cat. Initial consult fees plus antibiotics for supposed leg ifection. Second visit xrays ,more antibioticsjust in case . Third visit biopsy of hip with anaesthetic and pain killers.Fourth visit Amputate leg with bone cancer another anaesthetic more antibiotics and pain killers . I picked cat up from vet and was amused when i was told that we would not be charged for stitch removal. We have just had a not for profit vet clinic opened in hobart due to a very wealthy philanthropist named Jan Cambell. When my little dog Carni needs treatment thats where im going and i will be happy to pay full price ,as they will need support. When I was a vet nurse I was told that people in uni cities could ring their local veterinary colleges at the university and get reduced costs as part of the vets training am not sure if this service is still available ,but worth making enquiries.Wobbly.

I always had pets but now I am on the pension--there is NO way I could afford one if they needed vet care

Best bet for dogs is a pound dog - cross bred are far more healthy than the in bred pedigree "with papers" or even without who cost a fortune for a pup and then a fortune in vets fees. I canot beleive the cost of a pup even cross breds better to go to the Dogs Home in Tassie or RSPCA adopt a pet.

Did anyone see the UK program about pedigree dogs and their snobby owners who simply wont admit the suffering they have caused and continue to cause to these animals who surely are man's best friend.

Same here they say.

Glad to here from wobbly that Jan Cameron is supporting a not for profit animal clinic in Hobart - 4 hour drive from me but good for the area and a really wonderful woman she is - now on the board of the RSPCA here which peopled, was like too many. with bureaucratic and more about them than the animals, now all changed. Always watch the Lort Smith program and Bondi Vet.

Hello BigVal, How delighted apon reading your post to discover another Taswegian, and yes I got Jans surname wrong. We are very lucky to have people of her calibre involved in animal welfare here ,as the RSPCA has had a few issues in the past, hopefuly things will improve now. You are correct I feel in stating that a bitsa from the pound is quite often a stronger healthier dog than a dog bred by shonky breeders out to make a quick buck. We have a few so called puppy farms around Hobart, advertising pups every week in the paper , for large amounts of money. People fall in love as they are cute fluffy and appealing ,not stopping to visualise the next 12 to 14 years of vet fees food time and care that these animals will need, often when reality hits these dogs are abandoned and neglected , If they are lucky they are rescued and rehomed.Quite often tho they have outgrown their cute cuddly stage by this time and thru bad handling have developed lack of trust in the human race becoming timid or even biters out of fear , these dogs are put to sleep . I think there should be a law passed ,where people had to have a license to breed their dog with no more than 1 litter a year per breeder, The license should be expensive to attain and subject to policingand quality control with loss of license if animals not kept and bred to the highest standard. This would effectivly eliminate backyard breeders ,and puppy farms at the same time force breeders to breed dogs with a high standard of health effectivly givers purchases a guarantee as to a dogs lik.lihood to develope health issues from poor breeding Wobbly.

Seggie. After seeing some puppy farms on t.v, it's not those poor neglected animals who need putting down. Some were in such small cages that it made your heart bleed. One felt like, first of all, putting the owner/owners in such cages and then doing what needed doing to the animals, to them. Sorry if I upset anyone but it's absolutely disgusting to treat an animal as a 'thing' . To keep them merely for breeding and then sell them at markets or on the sides of roads, no, I have absolutely no sympathy for them at all.

Seggie, I couldn't agree more. I saw those programs BigVal refers to, and nearly cried.

For years I tried campaigning for better regulations, wrote letters to MPs and such. Things did seem to improve for a while, but have slowly and insidiously worsened.

.......

Each dog I've had up till my present one has been from a shelter, and my last before this, lived for 17 years..never sick, and would have been with me longer except she was attacked by a big dog. Not bitten, but as as she was old, caused fits and she lasted 12 months after that.

My current one is a pure breed, but I know her full background and my vet owned her mum. But, yes, no doubt, pure breeds seem to be not as robust as the mixed, and I think I've paid the mortgage on my vet's farm. LOL.. But I adore the little girl, and he is a good vet.

i think most vets and especially the big pharmaceutical companies are making very high profits out of peoples' love for their pets. my present cat is from an abandoned litter, and i bought him from the local vet. he (ie the cat, not the vet) had been given all the injections, worming, etc. now, i don't allow him to have any more injections as i've read that repeat injections (for most things) are unnecessary and cause suffering to the animals.

most canned and dried pet food will ensure that you pet gets sick sooner or later, with poor teeth and digestive system as time goes on if all they eat is processed food. the vetrinary profession is in league with the pet food profiteers. amazingly, vets in australia receive hardly any training in animal nutrition.

still, its difficult to know what is really the best for one's pet. my black cat is magnificent, at 2 years old, he looks like a small panther. i love him and make sure he's free during the day to go outside, but sleeps inside during the night. he seems to be quite happy with this.

i've found these to be a good websites re animal health:

http://www.rawmeatybones.com/

http://www.holisticat.com/vaccinations.html

i love him and make sure he’s free during the day to go outside, but sleeps inside during the night. he seems to be quite happy with this.

They do kill through the day also--not just at night Kika
