US may strip extremists of citizenship

US lawmakers have unveiled legislation to remove citizenship from Americans thought to have joined extremist groups like Al Qaeda, saying that would make it easier to assassinate them.

Taking on critics who say his proposal goes too far, Senator Lieberman pointed to news reports that president Barack Obama signed an order enabling the US military to kill US citizens such as radical US-Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.

The US has accused the US-born Yemen-based religious scholar Anwar al-Awlaki of being linked to an attack on a military base in Texas and the alleged attempt to blow up a passenger plane over Detroit on Christmas Day.

US officials accuse al-Awlaki of either inciting or ideologically influencing Major Nidal Hasan, a US army psychiatrist who shot dead 13 people at the Fort Hood military base in November, and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old Nigerian suspect in the attempted bombing of a US-bound plane.

I would like to see Australia do the same, strip citizenship from anyone convicted of terrorism or beonging to any extreme group such as Al Qaeda.

I would be totally in favour of any move along these lines,

but how could you possibly enact it? A Government can

cancel any Visa, it sees fit. But, how can citizenship be

removed. I can't see a major problem, where duel

citizenship is concerned, such as, I think, Greece. But

I cannot imagine any way that you could decide that a

citizen of Australia, is no longer a citizen. Either you are

or you are not, surely ?

This sounds like a great idea to me fwed and Innes' comments are also very relevant. I dont think it would be legally possible or even feasible to strip the citizenship of a native born Australian. It would however, be a sound and sensible strategy to use against any foreign national who chooses to make Australia their home and takes on Australian citizenship.

I believe that with immigrants (from ALL countries), we need to stress the view that if you wish to live here, you MUST be prepared to embrace our culture and adopt OUR values. We are prepared to respect YOUR cultural heritage, but YOU must respect ours. If a "new" Australian is guilty of terrorism or supporting terrorism by joining a terrorist organisation, they have forfieted their right to live here and quite rightly should be repatriated to whence they came.

innes is correct re persons born in Australia.

I should have added but forgot to that I mean any immigrant that is found guilty.

I am honestly not trying to be pedantic fwed, but once you are a citizen,

you are a citizen exactly the same as somebody born in Australia.

Why could we not stop inviting immigrants to become citizens 5

minutes after they land, & instead, grant a 20 year temporary

citizenship or temporary Visa, before being eligible. I am not certain,

but I don't think you can become a citizen of Iran or Iraq & certainly not

China even if you live there for the rest of your life. I have an Italian

Brother in Law & an English Sister in Law who have lived & worked in

Switzerland for over 45 years & can never become citizens.

I sure would not like to be living in America. It is so easy to accuse and judges are clever - anybody can be made scapegoat. We know people have been locked up and years later to be cleared as innocent; others are picked up off the streets and taken to foreign countries etc.

If there was a just way, and responsible people implementing it, yes.

I would not trust any Government, western or other to implement it.

The end justifies the means, but I would not want my end in the mincer thanks*

I stand corrected kfchugo. I know that there are rules,

before being granted citixenship in Australia, but I thought that

once granted, it could not be revoked, under any circumstances.

You are probably correct as things now stand Innes, but "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away" . A privilege granted by government can surely be revoked.......it would probably just take a little legislative amendment.

I see your point kfchugo. It is a bit like looking at a negro from

South Africo & saying:- as of now, you are white!!! When you

remove his citizismship, which plane do you put him on ???
