UN report says insects could be food of the future

The thought of eating insects like maggots, beetles, caterpillars and ants may give you the creeps, but a United Nations report says they may be the food of the future.

The authors of the study by the Forestry Department, part of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), say Western consumers should open their minds.

They say insects are an environmentally friendly food source that could also help in the battle against obesity.

"Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly, and they have high growth and feed conversion rates and a low environmental footprint," the report said.

Help to lower your carbon footprint and fight obesity at the same time - lot better than eating steak

Abby,  Your post is thought provoking.

I will admit to never have eaten insects in any place at any time.  The thought of doing so has always made  me feel wobbly in the lower regions.

Yet.....I would not mind having a go at a witchetty grub.  Apparently they are quite tasty.

So, game on...............  I'm ready!

Phil.

What would we be doing to the food chain tho'? What would birds and small mammals and even lizards etc. be left with? I think it is something I am happy to not be self indulgent about :)

Viv

I think they are proposing in breeding them instead of sheep pigs, chicken and cattle that produce a lot of methane wich causes climate change.

In that case I wil become a vegetarian.

With a name like mine,should I worry ??

I know I should share your concern BUT

Sorry ,didnt mean to spoil the post, just ignore me, LOL

I always enjoy a laugh :)

Abby,

You mean insects aren't now ...!!

What have I been doing ....

You might be shocked at how many insects you eat now

Check behind the scenes at your local eatery

havecyou thought about the worms already in our bodies or the insects on our skin.

Have a nice day

Yuk !!!! You have just put me off my lunch.

They eat all types in the Asian countries YUK

AW insects and grubs are alright, i got maggots in my Red Rooster once in Warwick QLD,I kid you not,I ate them but dident know it,they were in the stuffing on a 1/4 Chicken baked dinner,I put it down for my mates dog when i'd finished and he come in and had a go at me for giving his dog rotten food,i asked him what he meant and he said the chicken was moving with maggots?

I went out and stuck my fingers down my throat, the dog ate the evidence though, bummer, free food for life.

Cheers

In many asian countries, they gather or raise insects for food and i understand they are high in protien, low in fact and quite tasty although (hopefully) I will never know. There is no sign of any environmental impact in these countries as the insects/larvae/bugs are quite prolific and there seems to be plenty available to sustain the food chain.

I am reminded of the movie "Soylent green"......if they grind them up, process them and present them in an attractive format, who knows.....McD's may someday be serving the McBug.

As long as the bugs are MacDonald & not MacDoodle I wont need to worry !!!

one spam gone

Thanks Sandi

Perhaps this individual got tired of us.

This one different to the professional spammers we had previously - no advertized website. Somebody trying to do a look alike.

I looked at the last one put up by "Karl Marx" it also used instructions on how to use it and put up an image too. It is obvious it is spammers trying to crash sites.
