Turnbull

Well even though he must be admired for being a self made man--I wouldn't trust him as far as I could kick him uphill with a lead boot

we seldom vote for, or follow, trustworthy people. Good bye Brenden. We are extremely peculiar. If we were attacking a gun embankment & had the ability to choose our sergeant out of Mike Tyson or The Pope, I believe that everybody, other than the Pope's pet dog, would choose Mike.

I was surprised that Nelson was selected to replace John Howard, I thought M Turnbull would get the position then.

Personally I don't care who they select.

It does surprise me what an opposition is prepared to do when in opposition that they were not prepared to do while in government.

The circle turns as we witnessed at the WA elections.

Ah well LOL

Gerry

Brendan Nelson was never ever going to there for long - he took the Poison Chalice - as did Carmen Lawrence and Joan Kerner in States of WA and Victoria

>

I am no keen on Malcolm either but he is a stronger personality unfortunately like Kevin Rudd he is inexperienced and a bit bullish. If he does consult as promised - I will be surprised.

>

If John Howard had gone and given Peter Costello the helm - I think we would be in a stronger position to face the oncoming world recession that looms due to the bad regulators in the USA allowing the sub prime to happen just as they allowed Enron etc. - we at least are protected from those due to Liberals putting a stricter form of regulation in place. Not that its perfect.

>

My hope is that they media will get off carping about

leadership and also not now start straight in on a Republic as these are issues not important enough to take up so much time.

>

For instance we are paying $1.549 here for petrol today and the price of oil is US$93.44 - why is our government not doing something about it - like setting the ACCC the toothless tiger on to it and Strengthening their powers and sacking Graham Samuels if he doesn't get his finger out. Now that they can do as it is without the purview.

>

Doing more on the price of groceries too - that survey by ACCC was pathetic they deserve the order of the boot. Tasmania has an Independent Wholesaler of Groceries and it is owned and operated by Woolworth supermarkets = did that come to light in the enquiry - NO and why - because it didnt suit the "suits" who pay the big donations to political parties even though it it not in the interests of the public. Not to mention that diddled the Farmers.:(

Well I for one would not have voted for Costello--can't stand the man --in fact all of that party were/are--very arrogant--and were becoming more so as the years went on.

All I can say is God help us if they come to power again--the working man will really have a fight on his hand then.

This man is a clone of malcolm fraser so expect to hear you have.never had it so good, but not until he has the reins. Thats all we need another bloody millionaire gloating over us.Would never trust this person.

If you look him up on the net he is a crook--he worked for Kerry Packer as his barrister too--he is a VERY smart man --too bloody smart--for our good--he has some issues with the courts still

For interest:

Malcolm Turnbull and his wife are worth $135million.

Kevin Rudd and his wife are worth $100million .

Turnbull is a self made man, and I cannot understand why his status as a millionaire is constantly brought to the fore, as though it's something to look down on, when a person, through his own effort and hard work, is a success in life.

The same goes for Therese Rein.

Hard work and using brain power to get where she has, is to be admired.

Paul Keating was another very wealthy LABOR PM.

I would rather have someone with Turnbull's nouse re money matters, in charge while the world is heading into economic freefall.

I have NO problem with them having millions--good luck to them--and I admire anyone that makes good of themselves--however I do have a problem with the way they are going on about things that they --the Libs--could have fixed while in power for so long and are now ripping it into Lab' for not doing it now.

I think we are losing the thread millionaires or not I dnt give a monkeys the point Im trying to draw to is that they dont and have never had to battle in there lives, queue up for food for everyday items in the past. Some of us had to would be nice if they understood where we are coming from and forget the politics. You have pointed out millionaires from the past running the country how much better off are we because they are good at managing their own finances. Them first us when they get around to it.

I agree Koko. It is very serious and we do not have experienced hands on the rudder - just as we didn't in 1987 and ended up with 18% interest rates and early into what became a world recession. At Least Liberals have left a nice balance of no debt and 22 billion surplus for Labor to make their usual stuff up the money on - hopefully not all will be lost by 2010.

>

Also Therese Rein made her millions by taking advantage of John Howard's government privatising the job employment market. Ironic.

>

Paul keating and also Bob Hawke both entered Parliament on just salary and no mention of millions - both left parliament acknowledged by the left wing media as multi millionaires - so how did they make their millions?

Had to be on inside knowledge from business men in part as they both got into bed with big business and did down the workers - and the Unions were too stupid as usual to see that and went into helping to make the worker work harder for not a lot more money and cut down the number of workers called productivity gains so Business could get a better profit - no wonder unions lost membership - called this rip off The Accord.

>

Whereas wages rose what - 24% in the Howard years along with pensions. Also the bonus payments and Utility Allowance came from Howard government - along with a Carers pension and of course Self Funded Retiree's got their Seniors Allowance plus concessions because they did not draw down on the pension.

>

Usual bias against anyone not left wing by media. At least he made his money outside parliament. So wont need to feather his nest as it is already nicely feathered.

ROFL.

>

I would rather have had the person who got us out of disaster in the Asian Crisis and paid of 96 billion dollars of debt run up by Hawke and Keating in 14 years

Sad really that people vote for the man and his looks rather than his achievements.

>

Sad but we are stuck with a very inexperienced Treasurer along with a very inexperienced Government who have spent most of the last 10 months planning and reviewing and enquiring when not calling a summit of the world's top celebs to natter on about what little remains in their thoughts other than their narcissism.

Yes it is sad, BigVal. I have posted those facts on this forum and other forums so many times, I now can't be bothered. People believe what they want, aided and abetted by a complicit media.

Brendan Nelson is a good and honest man, and was never given a fair go by the media.

Now they're onto Turnbull's millionaire status, plus his early life, and are making fun of his childhood.

Yet, Rudd's sad story (completely distorted by him)of living in a car and being evicted suddenly has been whitewashed by the same media.

I have posted in the past also, the statements and true story of what happened, as stated by the children of Aubrey Low....but somehow it always is glossed over.

I was disgusted to hear Lindsay Tanner in Question Time today, rubbishing Malcolm Turnbull's childhood.

I thought he had a bit more principle.

The Libs never attacked Rudd on his childhood story.

When I see on here and elsewhere banal statements along the lines of "politicians are all the same", I despair.

Koko saidWhen I see on here and elsewhere banal statements along the lines of “politicians are all the same”, I despair.

>

Yep - It is also a well known saying that we get the government we deserve.

>

Well since 51% of the voting public voted Labor - and the 49% who didn't got landed with it too unfortunately.

Sigh.........review enquiry no action Kevin 737 overseas 51 nights this year and rising - millions being shucked out to overseas countries so 737 can look the big man - and although he agrees he could not live on $273 let alone $228 pensioners are gradually starving themselves to pay power heating medical as prices hike daily and he want to wait for a review next year and maybe do something in the May Budget.

>

The melt down on world markets could not have come at a worse time with a new government which historically cant handle money matters and the poor souls who live on income from these superannuation funds or shares are in for a rocky ride and may have to go onto the meagre age pension or part thereof. Could already be on part pension anyway of course.

>

2 million is the number of those who are living on the Age Pension wholly or part thereof with some other income.

Official figures say that over one third of those have no other income or an income of less than $20 a week on top of their age pension.

I can relate to Malcolm Turnbull's childhood as I was a single parent bringing up two children alone since they were 4 and 7yo. I was told when my son was only 5yo that he was gifted and that he needed to be with other gifted children as the public school system did not cater for his needs. The only school which caters to such children at such an early age is Sydney Grammar which is the school which Turnbull attended as a boarder as his father was often away.

After he was placed into a class with children two years above his age at North Sydney Demonstration School and bullied, I approached the Head Master of Sydney Grammar at Edgecliff and after an interview with my son, he accepted him. My son had a wonderful education at Sydney Grammar but in order to pay for the fees, I had to work three jobs as his father did not agree with sending him to a private school. In later years, my son won scholarships to other private schools, but Grammar did not want to lose him so they offered him a scholarship which they offer to children of single parents.

This could have been the case with Turnbull. His father was an electrician and like myself a single parent who believed in giving his child the best education he could. Perhaps he was also given a scholarship as it is means-tested and also on merit.

Being the child of a single parent, is not easy and often makes a child more ambitious especially if he is intelligent and has a good education. I admire Malcolm Turnbull for what he has achieved as he believed in himself. When my son was very young, he used to say he wanted to be the Prime Minister of Australia when he grew up as he could then have two houses - one in Canberra and another in Sydney!

I was thrilled when Malcolm Turnbull was elected as he has a vision for Australia. As a previous poster said, both Rudd and Turnbull are multi-millionaires and both had "deprived childhoods" which can motivate a person to achieve great heights as my son has done too. Often children who are "handed things on a plate" become lazy and unmotivated as life is too easy.

I look forward to listening to the debates in the future between Rudd and Turnbull. They are two of a kind really - just from different political affiliations. May the best man win the election in 2010!

Let's learn to love our politicians from both sides.

We could have ended up like poor Republicans

with Sara Palin...
