Trump’s McCain tribute slammed

US President Donald Trump has been criticised on social media for his “narcissistic” and “fake” condolences in response to the tragic passing of US Republican Senator John McCain, aged 81.

Taking to Instagram to express his sympathy to the grieving family of Senator McCain, who died after a battle with brain cancer, the US President wrote: “My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!”

But the message lost any good intention when Mr Trump accompanied it with a photo of himself.

Next to the words, the President featured a full-length photo of himself looking pensively into the distance, which drew widespread criticism.

Mr Trump butted heads with Mr McCain in recent years, with the president famously ridiculing the war hero’s military record.

“He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured,” Mr Trump said during the 2016 presidential campaign.

What do you think of Trump’s tribute? Was it lacking respect?

Quite liked John McCain although felt he showed miserable judgement in involving himself with that the exceedingly strange Sarah Pallin.....Always liked the way he stood up for Barak Obama on the campaign trail when a Republican voter wanted to score points inferring that Obama was not really an American...McCain could have let that slide but called the person out and defended Obama as a decent human being or words to that effect.

Yes Shetso that was his big mistake having her as a running mate.

As Trump wrote

“My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain.

Our hearts and prayers are with you!”

I can see nothing wrong with that

Like here so in US ...there are too many nit pickers.

It wouldnt matter what Trump said in relation to the passing of John McCain, there would be a negative remark by a lefty  Journalist. I think there would be others who, like me, have had enough of the personal criticism. What will these journos write about Trump on his passing? I suspect they will show no mercy. Its very sad that we cannot find cures to many cancers. And for the record, I think John McCain was a hero for what he had to endure.

Nothing wrong with this particular message, however it's common for Trump to open his mouth only to change feet.

I think that America deserves trump. I thought it was hilarious that he even managed to get elected. Shows how low politics has sunk. Getting that way here too!

Maybe he might do something worth while in office, still waiting on that. Even if he just manages to stir the whole place up , it might be a good thing.

But I thought his snipe at Mcain not being a"hero" cos he got captured was really gutter politics. Mcain was shot down, not "captured". And he had to endure severe treatment as a prisoner. Trump has no idea of what he is spouting.Obviously never been in that situation.

Does that make any serviceman(person) who gets captured any less a hero. There are many situations where its the prudent thing to surrender rather than get killed for no gain.

Trump needs to get some sense and stop using twitter etc and get on with running the country. Are you listening, Scott?

Trump managed to avoid “that situation” through five draft deferments during the Vietnam War: four for college and one for bad feet. Hypocrite.

There's not very many pollies I have respect for.  McCain is a standout exception and I admire the man, his life and his struggles.  If there were more like him the world would be a much better place.  Instead we have rats everywhere working the room rather than fixing their nations.

The Republican party has always produced great leaders. McCain is a fine example

Trump is being the natural pig he is always shown to be, making comments about McCain.

In any situation Trumo is in, he is always the same ridiculous, uneducated, mentally deficient and arrogant ass that he can't help being.

Is indeed a surprising fact that he is still at the helm of the American ship and it does not say much for the people in the States.

But, of course, it is the money that talks.

Rest in peace John McCain.

Having visited the US last year and obtained first hand knowledge of America and its poeple and because of non complusory voted they got what they deserved, the worst President in American history. And the majority of the people we spoke to agreed. So glad that this president (with a very small p) has been left in the cold and not welcome at the funeral of this great AMERICAN.

Decent chap McCain, RIP
