What a great idea Bookwyrm...did you have any specific place in mind? For me  the most important tip I can give anyone is to take out comprehensive travel insurance  and ensure it covers you for the places you plan to visit and the things you plan to do. One never knows what can happen on holiday and medical help in a foreign country costs a packet!

I always take our Travel Insurance and once over 80 years you have to pay thru the nose for it but I wouldn't go without it,

when I did my last cruise from Melbourne  we were about half hour fron Port Melbourne and a lady fell and broke here hip and had to be taken off the ship to land

so you never know

Good advice jessej

Abby When you damaged your foot in Bali  did you find that the Insurance Company paid towards any cancellation fees or just for medical treatment received ?

Viv

I was there for Charity Work who took care of it all including an expedient return home.

Seggie. OK everyone. Please tell me of a trustworthy travel insurance company. You all know I'm old!!!!

There are companies which will insure the older traveller.  A google search will bring some up.

Seggie...these are worth investigating:

Royal Automobile Club WA/ Queensland or Victoria

HBF also very good.

Seggie, Cota and Seniors Australia. If you have a gold credit this may provide automatic free cover. Join a Probus Club and you can apply for their travel insurance for up to 100 years old for you and a guest.

There are none Seggie.

Hope you are feeling better this week.

Private Insurance companies like Bupa offer traveller's insurance it depends on whether you are a member, your nominated excess but also covers you for other items as shown....link in pix below.

I agree, the most important thing when travelling outside of Australia is travel insurance. The medical costs are astronomical if something serious happens.

It is good to compare different policies on their fine print, what they will cover, rather than the cheapest travel insurance.

I read in a travel section of a paper once that even those cruises that stick to Australian ports, eg Sydney to Cairns, you need travel insurance for. I have to look this up.

I‘ll find out the best travel insurance for very senior travellers.

Fleur, any travel tips welcome on this thread!

Bookwym I had a friend who had no problem getting Travel Insurance until age 80 then was refused by everyone he had AF but had had that for a long time it was his age that was the problem, his 72 year old wife who had incurable cancer actually got Travel Insurance and had to be flown out when she became very ill - her chances of becoming ill were much greater than his so he flew with no Travel Insurance.

I enjoy coach day tours and river and water day tours. You can have a great touristic day out in comfort for not much money and explore anywhere in Australia, or overseas, and also your own backyard for not much money.

For example, this year I hope to do a tour of Hunter Valley vineyards out of Newcastle, probably the cost would be around $60. Also coach and other day trips are suitable for the single traveller as you don‘t pay a single suplement or have to be in a group of two or more or any of that sort of thing which makes travelling more expensive if on your own.

I love coach tours too Bookwyrm, I find it's a comfortable and trouble free way to show overseas visitors the sights!

Yes, everything is laid on for you, and the trips go to such interesting places.

What I would like to see on all coach tours  are two entry/exit points.   Sometimes it can be a long wait for everyone to get off and for those who are reasonably fit they would be able to get off quickly through one door and leave the other for those who are need assistance etc.

Good idea, Radish. I think the seats in the front should be reserved for the less mobile. But the driver could ask them to wait till everybody got off and then help them off if needed.

But 2 doors would be better as on public transport buses.

Sounds like a great trip, jessej! Do you travel on your own?

I think its great cruise ships using NG it will really help the locals. And what an experience for travellers ..

I‘ve been back over two weeks from Bali, my third trip in three years. As a single older woman with mobility issues, arthritirs and a bad back and use a cane, Bali is a great, cheap destination. I will post some Bali tips later.

South East Asia, including countries such as Thailand and Vietnam, is still good value for Aussie travellers.

Booky you really are amazing , an inspiration to all the whingers ...

Thanks Pete. Though I winge as much as the next person, lol.

I have never heard you always upbeat , except for some nutty political ideas ...

Travel Tip Dear Bookwyrm

Dont take drugs to Bali

For check in luggage you can pay to have it wrapped at Sydney Airport and also at Bali Denpasar Airport. Worth the very small expense.

would never go on a cruise without insurance, last year we went on a 30 day around australia cruise, my sister had a heart attack and was taken off the ship by ambulance and spent a week in Darwin hospital, her husband stayed in a nearby motel, she had heaps of tests and they were flown back to Sydney, with everything included she got almost  $12,000 back from the insurance company. i had tonsilitis twice the ships doctors visits cost $125  x2 and 1 lot of antibiotics cost me $75 x2 , on my return i got every cent back from the insurance. We have been on 9 cruises and have never been sick before, i wouldnt even think of cruising in the future without insurance. If you've got a prexisting health issue insure&go are worth a look at.

Good advice mausey
