Travel Checklist

If you are going on a holiday soon, there are a few steps you should take to ensure your house and belongings are safe while travelling.

Power

Turn all your appliances off at the switch and unplug them. When your appliances are plugged in, they are still drawing power, which is costing you money and is a fire hazard while you are away.

Tell the Police/Government/Neighbours

It is important to let the police in your local area know that you are going away. Visit your local station to report this and they will check on your house with a drive by while you are away.

Also let your neighbours know that you are going away so they can keep an eye on your house.

Finally, it is important to register with Smartraveller.gov.au where you are travelling and when in case of a national emergency in the country you are visiting. To do this visit http://smartraveller.gov.au/

Mail

If you are not expecting any urgent mail, you can ask Australia Post to hold your mail until you get back, alternatively you can ask a neighbour or friend to collect it.

Newspapers
Put all newspaper deliveries on hold until you get back.

Advise your bank
Contact your bank and let them know you are travelling overseas and will be using your cards while over there to ensure you don’t get rejections.

If you are traveling O/S scan and copy all and leave all the details of your passport credit cards etc with a family member and / or a good friend

It is also a good idea to leave a copy of your travel insurance policy with friends or family. If you are taken ill or otherwise indisposed in a foreign country it can be a lifesaver to have someone who can organise claim requirements for you.

While I can see the point in advising police, Australia post etc of your pending trip, by doing so you are also virtually telling "all and sundry" about your coming absence. This can be an invitation to burglars, so tell whom you must, but leave a light or two and a radio hooked up to a timer so that they come on for a while each day. It also helps to have friends leave their car in your driveway when it is not in use.
