Transgress

I am about to change from the invalid pension to the old age pension. I have been given the oppotunity to stay on the invalid pension, but not sure where I would be better off. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Peter.

Mmm,  I have heard that you can be taken off many things if you swap from the Invalid to the OAP  I will see if I have time to check today -- and get back to you

However, have a look at the link below in the meantime

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=change+from+the+invalid+pension+to+the+old+age+pension

That's a good breakdown of the differences and advantages/disadvantages. Thanks PlanB.

All the best with your decision peter hann.

Depends on your age, you don't mention what age you are currently?

i guess if he is going to the age pension he would qualify ie over 66!

Yes but DHS do often transition early to OAP from DSP, and not sure who that benefits?

Change to old age pension, Centrelink will not advice the difference  and lead you up the garden parth.

They provided misleading information to me & are now ducking & weaving as they have been caught out.

I changed from the disability support pension to the old age pension when I was sent a letter by Centrelink to advise me that my age made me eligible for the old age pension.

It was a struggle to obtain the disability support pension due to incorrect assessment by testing doctor. A test to prove that I had a specific medical condition I undertook left me quite ill for some months afterwards. Centrelink grudgingly informed me that I was eligible for the disability support pension after the results of this test proved that I was telling the truth.

Also at that time (don't know about present conditions) the disability support pension was retested regarding status of medical conditions so I opted to receive the old age pension as there is no mucking around about having to continually prove that your medical conditions have improved or deteriorated further - my chronic conditions have become much worse over the years). Assets and income were the same and pension level remained the same.

You would have to check if that is the same situation for your case. Good luck.

I was given that choice a few years ago and opted for the Age Pension.  For Disability I had to have regular assessments.  For Carers, my then terminally ill partner had to undergo various regular assessments.  On the Age Pension I was simply left alone - they can't dispute your age, nor prove nor disptrove your eligibility.  I didn't lose anything but gained peace of mind

Yes, Patti - no disputes re age or reassessing your health issues equals peace of mind due to freedom from that stress of continual reassessments.

As i understand if you stay on dsp when of oap age the dsp becomes taxable income so be careful what you decide.

ozrog, Age Pension is also taxable, so no difference really.

How is it taxed?

I can't wait to get off the DSP and onto the Age Pension.  Here's why:

1  I won't ever have to have any further intrusive medicals just to prove that I'm truly disabled.  When I first applied and was granted the DSP (over 21 years ago), the rules were quite different to what they are today - so very strict, and if I was to apply for the DSP today, I don't think that it would be granted.

2 There's a 4 week absence from Australia in a rolling 12 month period if you're on the DSP.  See https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/disability-support-pension/how-manage-your-payment/travel-outside-australia

3 Due to the above reasons, I won't ever have to have another medical and my travel won't be restricted to 4 weeks in any 12 month period. See  https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/age-pension/how-manage-your-payment/travel-outside-australia

Come on January 2023!

You can travel for longer you only get paid fo 4 i travel for at least 6 every year. People need to understand the travel policy and stop spreading mus information. They suspend you dsp after 4 weeks and start it again when you re enter Australia. OAP is 6 weeks.

Maybe it's you ozrog that needs to stop spreading misinformation. OAP does NOT suspend after 6 weeks and IS taxable.

Sorry maybe not sox weeks but you cannot stay OS indefinitely.

Ozrog, maybe just stop commenting, there are plenty of OAP living overseas indefintiley.

I think you might find the rules have changed.

To me the Centrelink policies are quite clear as explained on their website, e.g.

Prepare to transfer to Age Pension

https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/disability-support-pension/how-manage-your-payment/prepare-transfer-age-pension

Payments while outside Australia

https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/topics/payments-while-outside-australia/31226#affected

As before, all the best with your decision peter hann.

Ozrog I think you might find you are full of it. Do a bit of research before guessing.

https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/age-pension/how-manage-your-payment/travel-outside-australia

I've read it and there is nothing there i dont know. Maybe you need to read it in particularly the 6week and 2 year rules.

ozrog read the bit about living overseas indefinitely
