Tobacco manufacturer Phillip Morris will be forced to pay millions of dollars in legal fees to Australia after its case against plain packaging laws failed.
The tobacco companies fought vigorously against the Gillard Government’s decision in 2011, but they now look set to pay a hefty price.
The tobacco industry lost its first challenge against the laws in 2012 in the Australian High Court, but the most recent decision was handed down by the international permanent court of arbitration.
When the court handed down its findings it criticised the tobacco giant for bring a case that was an “abuse of rights”.
