Time for all volunteers to take a bow

As part of National Volunteer Week this week, Meals on Wheels Australia is highlighting the impact its 45,000-plus volunteers have on the lives of vulnerable, older Australians.

President Sharyn Broer said this year’s theme, Better Together, could not resonate more.

“We champion our volunteers every day, however with National Volunteer Week we can celebrate the contribution of Meals on Wheels volunteers on a broader, national scale,” she said.

“Our volunteer network is irreplaceable and additional support is required for volunteering organisations to remain sustainable.

“The importance of this should not be lost on whichever party forms government.”

Meals on Wheels has been supporting older Australians in their homes for more than 70 years.

“The delivery of a nutritious meal and a social and wellbeing check, performed by caring and compassionate volunteers, is a lifeline for older people who are at risk of malnutrition and isolation and provides valuable peace of mind to loved ones,” Mrs Broer said.

Used to be with meals on wheels a great organization opened my eyes to how they supported all walks of life can't speak highly enough of them especially the volunteers. Thankyou to them all

I used to be involved with the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.  This was for caring for people living with the Aids virus. One of our dear friends died with Aids and I saw how he was helped by people in the Foundation. I made an enquiry about volunteering. I was immediately accepted and part of my job was to take patients to their doctors appointments and hospital visits. Sometimes I would clean for them and just sit with them and listen to their stories. One young man from the Phillipines was in hospital and very sick, his parents came frpm overseas to see him and I was immediately told not to let on why he was there, confidentiality was the main issue. Quite a few of my patients died and it was slowly getting me down and I decided to cut ties. I had done my time and it was time to move on. I will always remember those lovely young men who just wanted to be accepted and were often abused.,
