Abby the cupcake one is a great idea!

Yes, I've used the damp teatowel/ freezer to quickly chill a bottle ( or 2) of white wine/champers many a time , especially when holidaying in the caravan .. and I always freeze half water too... good tips Abby .. :)

Where are you from jessej ?

Seggie. Hello again to you all.  Jessej must be around the same age as me. I call it an 'interesting' age. I'm kind to myself these days. In my day, yes, many many years ago, little cakes were called patty cakes, now known as cup cakes. I guess because you eat them with a cup of tea or coffee. Anyone remember the butterflly cakes? I loved them and may have a go at making them this week.

Are butterfly cakes  same as fairy cakes ?

I thought the name may have been an area thing but your vintage idea sounds feasible too :)

Seggie. Hi Abby. Yes, my mother usually called small cakes, patty cakes or fairy cakes. I loved the butterfly cakes which are just plain vanilla cakes, slice the tops off, cut the tops in half, dig out a bit of the cake and fill with sweetened cream, place the tops back like butterfly wings and dot a bit of red jelly inbetween. Yum. Total yum. Mouth is watering now so definitely off to make the jelly now and cakes tomorrow.

I only knew them as cupcakes, hadn't heard of patty cakes before recently going to buy some cup cake papers couldn't find any, only patty cake papers which are not so high and have a broader base than cup cakes, I also ended up buying silicon party cake "moulds" as they could be washed and reused.

Butterfly cakes now those are delicious Seggie.

Vivity, the larger ones are called Muffin papers/cups

I used to put Marshmallow in the Ice cream cups with hundreds and thousands on top for the kids.

No Sandi, Muffin paper cups are even bigger and deeper than the patty ones so I have 3 different sizes in my cupboard, the patty ones I have are not big enough for muffins.

Patty Cake, Patty Cake,
Baker's Man;
That I will Master,
As fast as I can;
Prick it and prick it,
And mark it with a T,
And there will be enough for Tommy and me.

Just thought I'd throw that in  :)

So please you can still remember your Nursery Rhymes :)

Thanks Abby :)

Too much excitement in one day  ooo

Vivity, that's what I said.  The bigger ones are called Muffin cups.  Here you can get the tiny ones, the next size up for fairy cakes , chocolate crackles, then you can get the ones for the larger cakes ( cup cakes)  and you can also get a small and Large Muffin one.

So at least 5 different sizes here.  It's a pain in the proverbial.  I never use the large muffin ones cause they disappear too quickly in this household, in fact they start disappearing as soon as they are out of the oven.

Oh jessej, and Seggie, you warm my heart.... I have been fighting for the past few years with this change from my memory of Patty Cakes, Fairy Cakes or Butterfly Cakes  to damn CUPCAKES, very American they are, I'm pretty good with 'progress' BUT calling my Patty Cakes CUPCAKES, now that's just downright 'unAustralian'...mmmmm...I must be getting old....lol

I know as children we never had small cakes in paper cases just big cakes cut up so checked in my 50 year old Mrs Beetons she mentions using patty tins to make small sized versions. Think the first time paper cases were produced and became popular was in the 1960s when pre-packaged cake mix was produced?
