The slap that rocked the Oscars
The Oscars is usually about the frocks – some worn by males – and the awards of course. But this year, it was all about 'that slap'.
Actor Will Smith, who played Venus and Serena's father Richard Williams in the film King Richard, slapped comedian Chris Rock on live television, then won an Oscar, received a standing ovation and partied long and hard.
The slap was in response to a joke Rock made about the shaved head of Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith – she has alopecia. Smith walked on stage, slapped Rock, returned to his seat and shouted, twice : “Get my wife’s name out of your f---king mouth.”
Smith later apologised to the Academy, but not to Rock and said: “Love will make you do crazy things.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) said later in a statement: “We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law.”
Earlier, it had said “the Academy does not condone violence of any form”, but after reaction and condemnation around the world, that was upgraded to: “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr Smith at last night’s show.”
Will Smith be allowed to keep his award? Should he? Were you gobsmacked by the incident?
Yes he should keep his award -- it was very wrong of Rock to make a comment like that
