The Proms hit the road

One of the world’s great classical music festivals, the BBC Proms in London, is coming to Melbourne next April.

It’s the first time the BBC has exported the Proms as a live event, and the Hamer Hall season will be a test for possible future ventures.

The five-concert season will feature the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (under Proms veteran Andrew Davis) and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, with the Sydney Youth Orchestra giving a concert for children.

There will be two performances of a concert called Life Story, with projections from the David Attenborough series accompanied by Murray Gold’s orchestral score. BBC Proms Australia is presented by BBC Worldwide and Single Market Events, and is intended to be accessible to newcomers. Some tickets will be $20.

“We try to make everything very unstuffy,” says Edward Blakeman, director of the 2015 Proms. “The concerts aren’t formal, you don’t have to dress up. You just have to come with an open heart and open ears.”

I love the Proms and think it is fantastic they are coming to Melbourne.. Wonder what the last night will be.

In London they broadcast the last night to a live Audience of 100,000 in Hyde Park and to Other UK cities.

I am bumping this topic as it got lost in Musseltalk ...

Enjoyed last night at the Proms in London a few times, but somehow, frenzied waving of the Union Jack on Aussie soil doesn't gel with me. Seems a bit bizarre somehow.

I have also enjoyed the Proms at the Albert Hall in London too Ray and am delighted it's coming to Australia...it's always a fabulous night and you can be sure I'll be there...waving my Union Jack....doesn't make me a lesser Aussie! Most of my Melbourne relatives are going too:

Sounds like a lot of fun Fleur. I have seen it on TV and almost wished I could be there, would have to wave an Aussie flag though!

I haven't seen the programme yet , the last night of the proms in London involves waving of any flag of course being in London both the Englsh flag and UK flag dominate.,
