The perfect Holiday?

Different personalities and interests can lead to quite different ideas as to what is a perfect holiday, even between partners or close friends.

My daughter has just returned from NZ with her partner from a NZ road trip and having a friend with them made it pretty good as mixed interests led to diversity and more freedom to individually enjoy or share interests.

My sister on the other hand has gone to America without her partner as she says she can enjoy her own interests on her own  more that way, tho' I personally find sharing experiences adds to the enjoyment.

Strict schedules or freedom to deviate? Cruise or camping appeals or appals.

What do others think is the perfect holiday plan?

Yes the cost of accommodation and food is one of the most expensive in the world.

Hotels and restaurants are a seven day a week operation they cannot afford the double and triple rates so restaurants are closing on a Sunday and hotels are putting up rates all damages our tourism and jobs .

You might have a point there Pete :)

If it is a business running for profit then who would wish to work on weekends fo less money than entitled to, if they cannot run a profitable business under the laws, then should get out.

They are.

Good....... If running a business for profit depends on the employees working for less, then it should get out.

What trade can be hired for less than award rates, and hope to get away with it.

Bang goes our tourism industry the biggest employer in Australia . So you would rather see people out if work than work together to. Create jobs . The problem is that Gillard replaced Keatings work place bargaining with centralized awards taking us back to the fifties and even though she said this would not result in higher costs it did

The Taskforce proposed a compromise in their principles: “Award rationalisation shall not result in an overall loss of generally relevant current award benefits for employees and should not result in substantive overall net additional costs for employers.”

Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, subsequently said she accepted this approach, guaranteeing that no employee would be worse off and no employer face higher costs.

The Taskforce also proposed using the most widely used Award terms in any new Awards, and allowing variations to ensure fairness to both employers and employees.

It further said that allowances should be consolidated provided that this does not result in any substantive additional actual employment costs.

In adopting these principles, the Taskforce specifically gave the example of the quick service restaurants because of penalty rate problems where there are non-standard working weeks. It is common in this industry for teens and young people to work casual hours with low or no penalty rates.

Yet the Industrial Relations Commission proposed a new Award with a national 25 per cent penalty rate for casuals, and extra 25 per cent for work on weekday evenings and Saturdays, and a whopping 75 per cent loading for work on Sundays. Casuals working public holidays would have a 275 per cent leading on their normal hourly rate!

This was precisely the problem that the Taskforce sought to avoid. As the Industry argued, it would drive up business costs, reduce employment and force many owners out of business.

Remember these are not overtime rates, so now we see the results of Gillard ignoring her own task force recommendations and her own stated views and throwing over work place bargaining as brought in by Hawke/Keating/ Kelty . No wonder people want to make their own arrangements .

Pete, I put up this Topic titled "The Perfect Holiday" as light relief but you have highjacked this topic so you can give a copy/paste and introduce a totally irrelevant political view which is not relevant to something titled a  "Perfect Holiday".

Highjacking of other peoples topics really pisses people off if you hadn't realised by now, and you demand people remain on topic on your own posts so try respecting others topics.

If you get an idea for a topic set up your own for everyone  to be involved in if they  wish to but please stop taking other peoples topics off on a tangent to your own interests..

It is totally on topic as it relates to the tourism industry and was taken in this direction by Seth

Why don't you ever chastise Davey for his toady inane remarks on every thread his constant attacks on other members and his racist remarks .

Pete :)

Why are you trying to incite hatred on other members ???

I know you have a quirky sense of humour not understood by any other member but your remark above is not even an attempt at being funny.

Pete if we could get you to work at all it would good and less burdon for the tax payer.

You are still working age I understand.

It's "burdEn" you stupid fool.

speak English for farks sake.

Davey I have told you many times that I have no need to work, and what is working age.

Pete, I think you should apologise to vivity for hijacking her thread - pasting heaps of political rubbish in a thread posted in "Travellers Corner" and for being completely off topic.

From someone who chastised others and reported them repeatedly , I think you should take a good look at your behaviour.

But I guess you won't apologise and will carry on trolling with your 2 trollmates.

Yes Gerry I have already read Vivs post and replied .

jaghead and pete identical boofheads, jughead seemst be petes guardian.

Quote Pete ... " Why don't you ever chastise Davey for his toady inane remarks on every thread his constant attacks on other members and his racist remarks "

change the name from Davey to jag and ask yourself the same question Pete?.

I think Maggs if you look at your own Thread of Al Air Security you will see .

No pete you don't need to work living off the taxpayer is better EH

Is it Davey I have no idea please tell me you seem to be the expert .

Jags if you ignore the children for a moment and go back to the real problem that is killing our biggest employer the tourism industry you will see I posted a report from the task force that Gillard/Rudd appointed then Gillard ignored . Got any comments Cobber digger blue

Pete you hijacked this topic The Perfect Holiday just for you to express yourbpolitical views as you do with many topics,  this whole site is not just about what interests you.

I asked you before to start your own topic when you went off at a tangent, and no I  do not consider Seth started the political discussion you used his comment to divert it. Part of the rules of this forum is to stay on topic it beats me why you should consider that does not apply to yourself but demand everyone else stay on topic on anything you post.

Thank you for your input you do not own a thread you start I do consider that Seth changed the topic to one of political I tried to bring it back to tourism

Peete, do you ever hesitate for a second and wonder why you are so disliked ?

Your only 2 friends on this forum should ponder the same item.

4 years ago when we did a road trip through Switzerland and Austria, accomodation and dining was between 20-30% more expensive than in OZ

Now we are probable one of the most expensive countries in the world. High labor costs and the appreciation of the AUD has had a devastating impact on the tourism industry.

Instead of assisting these industries, the Gillard govt has stuck yet another nail in the coffin by pushing industrial reform back 30 years.

275% loading on Sundays??? WTF ???

Vivity, before OH became unwell we used to spend every other weekend ..plus holidays at Coobowie on the Yorke Peninsula only 250kms away from here , far enough to feel that 'country air' and near enough to get back if there was an emergency .. we had a caravan onsite and we'd take the dog too, fantastic little place, one pub.. right on the beach .. plenty of boat ramps .. great fishing  etc .. I used to work odd shifts and sometimes would  just take off by myself ( plus dog) for a couple of days mid week if I'd been rostered to work on a weekend ... didn't do anything 'cept read books... go for a swim... long walks etc.. I'm not a 'party' person and if I had the cash could quite happily live in a caravan for the rest of my days .. dislike all the unnecessary dust collecting rubbish that's entailed in the normal lifestyle ( but that's another topic, maybe)

Sounds good Maggs, and relaxing. (and on topic)

Thanks Maggs having a "dive hole" to disappear to, have everything you want to hand waiting sounds just ideal. The simpler things in life are often the best. Makes me feel good just reading what you put, and as Gerry says back on the real, "feel good", topic.

Yes when I lived in Adelaide we used to have a shack down the Coorong and I used to love to get away down there we had a tinny and used to net the Coorong and shoot rabbits . We would come back with Esky full of fish and rabbits.

The retired builder was caravaning  around Australia, he decided to camp alongside a magnificent river,  he noticed what looked like a bark hut when a young bloke emerged with a fishing rod, he went over, started a conversation and discovered the YB was unemployed and not interested in getting a job or evenworking, The retired builder said look if you get a job, work hard, save your money when you retire you can afford to go fishing every day.. The YB... 'What do you think I'm doing now? without all that other rubbish.

Seggie.  Holidays? This old Seggie has reached an age where she knows what type of holiday she can handle.   Just sitting, watching the ocean with a nice cup of tea and a good book.  What does she really want? Well, she'd love to be able to walk everywhere for hours on end.  She has learned that she has to be content with what she is able to do but she can remember times when she climbed hills (not mountains), waded through streams, fished in rivers, helped pitch a tent,  lit a campfire, swung the billy, oh yes, she is one lucky Seggie to have such memories.

Seggie :)

Thank you for sharing your wonderful and contented memories with us.

True seggie, memories are what we have and who we are, good or bad it is called life,  and we are so blessed to have been able to have partaken in the experience.

I think it was Phyl who used to say; 'Life is Good"

I did and I am again saying "Life is Good" Seth - yippee I am on the mend.

and you know what? I have hair again VERY curly whereas I had wavy hair but now look like a curly Retriever lol - dosn't matter I have hair so after 8 months of going from bald to tufts and then fluff and  spiky to now, I am blessed to HAVE HAIR AGAIN.

Re holidays well we love our home  us stick in the muds SO every now and then we go on holiday in our bedroom yeppity we do.... I move the bed around and  change the  Doon and linen on the bed  to match the destination and wherever we think we might go decorate to that effect.

Well o.k. weird? but I admit I am a bit weird lol o.k. a lot weird dosn't matter :)

great to have your hair back, I was finding it hard to visualise a bald headed lady hanging upside down on a trembling machine or was that a back massage chair. Good to have you back Phyl.

If anyone is thinking of a cruise I can highly recommend Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.  We had our first trip a few years ago on Rhapsody of the Seas and thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.

Recently met a man who will only travel on this particular ship so I think that says it all.

As for P and O yuk!

We are going on the Radiance of the Seas in November next year on a "Bravo" cruise which goes to Noumea and the Isle of Pines and is a "Cruise of the Performing Arts" and has on board a whole host of artists including Elaine Page, Teddy Tahu-Rhodes, David Hobson, John Waters, Marina Prior and many others.

Have never been on a Royal Caribbean before and looking forward to it. Have been on P&O and the Princess line and English Thomson cruises and several river boats and have to say I found them all OK.

http://www.cruiseexpress.com.au/bravo-musiccruise

I have lots of friends who cruise , in fact one spends eight months a year on one , and I love hearing about their adventures . But not something I could do I much prefer to be an independent traveller and decide as I go how long I want to spend in each spot .

Were we talking about Bright Jaywalker , anyway it is a fabuluose spot for a holiday. In winter you can drive up to a choice of ski fields  but not have to stay in the snow.

I don't think we'll be heading for the ski fields - not my scene I'm afraid but will enjoy the nearby walks and the restaurants. Only have three days there and two are meetings.

Re cruises - we do a mixture of independent travel and packages. This year we are going to Milan by ourselves for a week to go to La Scala, then heading down by train to France (near La Rochelle) where old English friends have recently acquired (swapped it for their house in Spain) an ancient chateau and staying with them for two weeks and then will have the rest of the time in England. We often take a short cruise opr package tour from England because neither of us left-hand drives so not possible to get to a lot of the places we want to see any other way.

I did the backpacking and Eurailing round Europe and SE Asia in my younger days, so now just taking it easy as we get older. We do all our own planning and booking and  that's part of the fun too.

I like the mixture you have done Jaywalker . I still buy the Britrail passes , which you can only do outside of the UK  they are really good value . I then hire a car for local travel . For instance I will take the train from Chesterfield in Derby to Torquay in Devon . Then hire a car for local touring .

Another enjoyment is to take the ferry from Venice to Corfu and then ferry from there .

Well we may be bits of stick in the muds as well relatively to the wide world as we only like to holiday in this big wide land of ours..... We love nothing more than getting out into the back blocks, places where you can only take a tent, sit around the camp fire of a night, the stars shining very brightly above and telling stories of our travels, we meet such lovely people out there and we're all like minded, that's why we're out there.... then of course we have our caravan which we take on the black top, again we love to head North for a few weeks end of September and Oct..... just relaxing and thoroughly enjoying life.... as Phyl says...."Life is Good" and I say make the best of it while we have it coz it really is tooo damn short and you are dead a hell of a long time......

My best holiday is cruising the River Murray  with Spirit Australia Cruises,I have traveled the lenght  of the Murray in stages Albury to Echuca-----  Echuca to Mildura------Mildura to  Renmark  SA----- Wellington to Border Cliffs---Also the Coorong and in January this years I cruises the Gippsland Lakes great trip  with this company  Good Food and plenty of it and a good Accommodation

In 1978, I sold some businesses & bought a beautiful 53 foot ketch named the Aphrodite, which was located in Port Vila, Vanuatu.  I invited 8 friends to come with me to sail her back to Australia.  Before I left Sydney, I bought 2 books on Astral navigation, a book of tables & a brand new plastic Sextant in a wooden box.  When we left Vila Harbour I estimated the compass setting for Ouvea & went down into my cabin for a rest & opened my first book on navigation.  Over the next 30 hours, I took enough sightings to find out that we were actually in Auckland, Peru & Fiji.  Fortunately my dead reckoning was better than my Celestrial skills & by the time we spotted Ouvea, my sightings had improved to an accuracy of 30 odd miles incorrect.  A few hours later, we had a visit from a French Navy Cruiser & the Captain wanted to know what we were doing there without having checked in with Customs & Immigration in Noumea, as required by International law.  I managed to advise him that we were using the rule of the Seas to take shelter to repair an engine fault.  I could write a book on the rest of the trip, but, to this day, not one of my friends ever found out that I had never seen a real sextant until we left Vila.  Believe me, that was the greatest & most exciting holiday of my life.

Sounds wonderful Ken. Lots of dramas but that's what makes it more fun I think  I would have loved to be right there helping steer - no need to gasp. You can trust me lol

As you know we had heaps of fun with our cabin cruiser and went where no man dares to tread at times  as the Gippy. Lakes can change veryquickly especially around Lakes Entrance :)

This yours? 1985 Pearson Ketch 53 sailboat for sale

No Phyl.  My Aphrodite was an Alden designed Choey Lee built 53 foot ketch with timber masts & port holes & a teak deck, built in 1969.  I spent 3 or 4 years sailing around the South Pacific before I started a Charter Business with her in Vanuatu in 1982.  I employed a skipper & came back to Australia.

BTW  I did some crazy things, but I was never crazy enough to go over the bar at Lakes Entrance.

Sounds likey ou had a lot of fun on that trip with a lot of thrills and excitement.

Both Peter and I look back and do not believe we did it and twice at that  but we did judge "slack water" calm day of course but even so, VERY Scary but hey heaps of fun when we made it lol.

Your Aphrodite sounds like a beautiful piece of work.

You have had a lot of fun Ken.  Maybe take on  Bass Strait  and bring home the cup.

I would make a good deck hand as would hang over the side nicely (as long as I had a u-beaut harness)

Be good if you can :)
