'Snake oil salesmen'?

Having just been granted level 3 [home-care] package, I am so frustrated at the different levels of charges that some of these providers are allowed to charge.

Most of the people you speak to are like snake oil salesman – 'we are the best and offer top service for the dollar that we will be extracting from your package for just doing very basic help and management of your account'. As for self-management, some companies do not do [that] at all or are limiting it to an area around [a] capital city.

Are you concerned at the fees some home-care providers charge? Did you (or will you) do your research to ensure you are getting as much value from your package as possible?

Yes, my husband is on level 2, and we were debited two charges totaling $310.04 on 31 March - I have yet to receive an explanation.

They all promise the world and deliver very little of that I am charged about 1 5th of my level three package in fees and charges and one has the distinct impression that we are spending their money when we need things and although the carers get minimal wages they charge $63 and hour for their labor yet most would not get paid any more than $25. I tried self management but their are not many who do that. I will say that Mable people were very good with their service. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Have a look at Local Guardians as a service provider. They are very low cost, give a really great service (at least to me) and are supportive of self management. I also use Mable to access my support worker and it is great. I live in a very small remote town and services of any kind are very limited here, but for most things I find these two organisations are very good.

The root cause of this is the privatisation of the scheme in that Government supply the cash then private companies provide the service at a cost set by them. Some are good and some are only in it to make as big a profit as they can.

Sadly, my husband has had difficulty with our lawn which is large and hilly. We applied to My Aged Care and got accepted for lawn mowing and 2 hours has been allocated twice a month October to April and once a month other times. My Aged Care gave us a list of 10 companies and from that we were able to choose Integrated Living. They charge us $12ph and the work is satisfactory. This is the only thing I know about this subject and can state that we are happy with the arrangement.
